Echoes of the Past

Today felt like stepping through a portal into Oman's rich history. Aisha, Hans, and I embarked on a journey to explore the ancient fortresses that stand as silent witnesses to centuries of Omani heritage. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our day began with breakfast at HYGGE CAFE & RESTAURANT. The name says it all – it was the embodiment of 'hygge,' that Danish concept of coziness I've come to appreciate so much since moving to Bamberg. It was a delightful mix of local and international dishes. Aisha enjoyed some pancakes, while Hans and I opted for Omani-style eggs, a spicy and flavorful way to kickstart our day.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to our first destination: Bahla Fort.

Bahla Fort: A Citadel of Mud and History

As we approached Bahla, the fort's immense size became apparent. Rising from the desert landscape, its mud-brick walls and towers told tales of a bygone era. Bahla Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and I could immediately see why. Built by the Banu Nebhan tribe between the 12th and 15th centuries, it was once the heart of Ibadism, a branch of Islam with influence across Arabia and Africa.

Wandering through the fort, I was struck by its sheer scale. The walls stretched for kilometers, enclosing a mud-brick settlement, a Friday mosque, and even a falaj system for irrigation. Aisha was fascinated by the maze-like structure, running through the corridors and peeking into the old rooms. Hans, ever the engineer, was intrigued by the fort's construction, noting the ingenious use of mud and straw.

While the fort has undergone restoration, it still retains an aura of authenticity. I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like within those walls centuries ago. The views from the battlements were breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding oasis.

After exploring Bahla Fort, we were ready for lunch. Based on a recommendation, we decided to try the Pakistani Restaurant in Nizwa. It was a humble place, but the aromas wafting from the kitchen were irresistible. We ordered a variety of dishes, including biryanis, kebabs, and curries. The food was incredibly flavorful, with spices that transported me back to the bustling streets of Al Ain. Aisha, surprisingly, loved the naan bread, devouring it with gusto. Hans, a fan of spicy food, thoroughly enjoyed the curries.

Jabreen Castle: A Palace of Art and Intrigue

Our next stop was Jabreen Castle, a short drive from Bahla. If Bahla Fort was a testament to military might, Jabreen Castle was a celebration of art and culture. Built in the late 17th century by Imam Bel'arab bin Sultan Al Yarubi, it served as both a palace and a center for learning.

As we entered the castle, I was immediately struck by its beauty. The ceilings were adorned with intricate paintings and calligraphy, the windows were decorated with delicate carvings, and the walls were lined with ornate arches. It was clear that Imam Bel'arab was a man of refined taste and a patron of the arts.

One of the most impressive rooms was the Sun and Moon Hall, a reception hall with fourteen windows and a stunning ceiling. Aisha was captivated by the eye-shaped designs, while Hans admired the acoustics of the room. We learned that the castle was designed to protect against attackers, with minimal use of wood to prevent fires and thick walls to withstand cannon fire.

Wandering through the castle's many rooms, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. It was clear that Jabreen Castle was more than just a fortress; it was a palace, a school, and a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Oman.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Nizwa. For dinner, we chose Al Mandi Restaurant, known for its traditional Omani cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the famous Mandi dish. We ordered the chicken Mandi, a fragrant rice dish served with tender, marinated chicken. The flavors were incredible, a symphony of spices that danced on my tongue. Aisha, surprisingly, enjoyed the dish, even though it was a bit spicy for her. Hans, a fan of Middle Eastern cuisine, declared it one of the best meals he'd had in Oman.

As we savored our Mandi, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had journeyed through time, exploring ancient fortresses and immersing ourselves in Omani culture. It was a day filled with history, beauty, and delicious food.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Wadi Al Nakhr and Wakan Village, venturing into the stunning natural landscapes that Oman has to offer. Before I close, I must share a funny incident from today. While at Jabreen Castle, Aisha, in her boundless curiosity, asked one of the guides if the castle had any secret passages. The guide, with a twinkle in his eye, led her to a small, unassuming door, only to reveal a broom closet! Aisha burst into laughter, and even Hans and I couldn't help but chuckle. It was a reminder that even in the most historical of places, there's always room for a little bit of fun.
