A Final Embrace of the Dolomites
As our Dolomiti adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of contentment and a touch of melancholy. Today was about soaking in every last bit of this magical landscape, savoring the unique flavors of the region, and securing a few mementos to keep these memories alive. It's hard to believe our nine days here are over; it feels like just yesterday we were marveling at the Tre Cime di Lavaredo for the first time. Today was a day to cement those memories, to etch the beauty of the Dolomites into our hearts before heading back to Bamberg.
Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Baita Locia De Contrin. The crisp mountain air sharpened our appetites, and we enjoyed a traditional spread of local cheeses, fresh bread, and strong coffee. Aisha, ever the early bird, was particularly thrilled with the homemade yogurt. I even managed to try out a new German idiom on Hans, describing the breakfast as stärkend wie ein Mühlrad – as invigorating as a mill wheel! It’s been a fun little hobby of mine to pepper my conversations with these phrases, much to Hans' amusement. After breakfast, we bundled up for our hike to Cima Ombrettola.

The trail was challenging but rewarding, with panoramic views that seemed to stretch on forever. As we ascended, the landscape transformed from lush meadows to rocky terrain, a testament to the Dolomites' dramatic beauty. Hans, ever the supportive husband, kept Aisha entertained with stories of mountain gnomes and mischievous marmots, while I focused on capturing the stunning vistas with my camera. We took our time, stopping frequently to catch our breath and admire the scenery. The air was so clean and crisp; it felt like we were breathing in the very essence of the mountains. I made a mental note to find more hiking spots like this near Bamberg; it’s a wonderful way to reconnect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones that remind us of the simple beauty of the world and the importance of sharing it with those we love.
Reaching Cima Ombrettola was an accomplishment for all of us. The sense of accomplishment, combined with the breathtaking views, was truly exhilarating. We could see for miles in every direction, the majestic peaks of the Dolomites laid out before us like a painter's canvas. Aisha, with her boundless energy, was particularly thrilled, pointing out every mountain she recognized from our guidebook. It was a moment of pure joy, a shared experience that I know we will cherish for years to come. The Dolomites have a way of making you feel small yet connected, a feeling I wish I could bottle and bring back to Germany with me.
After our descent, we drove to Vista Panoramica Campitello.

The views from there were equally stunning, offering a different perspective of the valley and surrounding peaks. We took some family photos, trying to capture the essence of this beautiful place. Aisha insisted on taking a few silly selfies, which, of course, turned out to be the most memorable. It's these candid moments that truly capture the spirit of our travels, the laughter and spontaneity that make each trip unique. We spent some time simply taking in the view, etching it into our memories before moving on. I’m already planning to frame one of the photos for our living room; it will serve as a daily reminder of our Dolomiti adventure.
Lunch was at Rifugio Fodom, a charming restaurant nestled in the mountains.

We indulged in hearty Ladin fare, savoring every bite of the traditional dishes. Hans, always the adventurous eater, tried the local barley soup, while Aisha opted for a simple pasta dish. I decided on the *turtres*, savory fried pastries filled with spinach and cheese, a local specialty that I had been eager to try. The warm, rustic atmosphere of the *rifugio* added to the experience, making it a truly memorable meal. It’s these culinary adventures that I love most about traveling; discovering new flavors and traditions is such a wonderful way to connect with a culture. As we ate, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the past week, from the exhilarating hike to Tre Cime to the peaceful stroll through Lago di Braies. It’s amazing how many memories we created in such a short time.
Our final stop of the day was Pordoi Souvenirs (S.N.C.), where we browsed for mementos to take home.

Aisha, of course, wanted everything she saw, but we managed to narrow it down to a few small trinkets: a hand-painted wooden figurine for her, a set of Dolomiti postcards for Hans, and a beautiful hand-carved wooden bowl for me. I plan to use it to hold my collection of German *Weihnachtsbaumkugeln* (Christmas tree ornaments); it will be a lovely reminder of our time here whenever I see it. I also picked up a small *Dirndl* for Aisha, as I thought it would be a fun way for her to connect with her German heritage. The shop was filled with unique treasures, each telling a story of the region's rich cultural heritage. It’s always a pleasure to support local artisans and bring home something truly special.
Dinner tonight was at Osteria La Montanara in Canazei.

This *osteria* is known for its traditional Trentino cuisine, revisited with passion and skill. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect setting for our farewell meal. We savored every bite, knowing that it would be our last taste of the Dolomites for a while. I tried to remember as many German idioms as possible to use at dinner. Hans was particularly fond of “Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei” – everything has an end, only the sausage has two!
As I sit here tonight, writing this final blog post, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. The Dolomites have captured my heart with their breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality. It has been a journey of discovery, both of the world around us and of ourselves as a family. I am so grateful to have shared this adventure with Hans and Aisha, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I know that we will carry a piece of the Dolomites with us, wherever we go. And who knows, perhaps one day we will return to explore even more of this magical region. Until then, *Arrivederci*, Dolomites!
Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Bamberg, filled with memories of majestic peaks, charming villages, and delicious food. While it’s always hard to say goodbye to such a special place, I know that we will carry the spirit of the Dolomites with us, inspiring us to seek out new adventures and appreciate the beauty of the world around us.
