A Tuesday in the Alice

Today was a delightful dive into the heart of Alice Springs, a day brimming with historical insights, local crafts, and the unique charm of the outback. It’s amazing how much character a place can reveal in just a single day, and I was eager to soak it all in.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Page 27 Cafe. Tucked away just off Todd Mall, this quirky cafe was a vibrant start to the day. The cafe had a laid-back, bohemian vibe, and the cafe was filled with locals and tourists alike. I opted for their famous iced coffee, which came with a scoop of ice cream – a delightful twist that gave me the perfect energy boost for the day ahead. It reminded me of the cafes back in Bamberg, where Hans and I often spend our Sunday mornings, sipping coffee and planning our next adventure.

With a spring in my step, I made my way to The Residency. This historic house has played a significant role in the story of Alice Springs, having once been the home of the Government Resident and even hosting Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh back in 1963. As I wandered through the rooms, I was transported back in time, imagining the important decisions that were made within those walls. The building itself is an adaptation to the arid environment, showcasing unique architectural responses to the climate. The concrete floors laid directly onto the earth for passive heating and cooling were particularly fascinating. It’s incredible to see how people adapted to life in such a unique and challenging environment.

Sometimes, the most enriching travel experiences come from simply wandering and allowing yourself to be open to the unexpected.

Next on the agenda was the Todd Mall Markets. Luckily, my visit coincided with the Tuesday markets, a vibrant showcase of local artistry and craftsmanship. The markets were bustling with activity, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and lively chatter. I strolled through the stalls, admiring the handmade jewelry, Aboriginal art, and unique clothing on display. I even picked up a beautiful hand-painted didgeridoo as a gift for Hans – I know he’ll appreciate the intricate designs and the story behind it. The Todd Mall Markets are not just a place to shop; it's a community hub where locals and tourists come together to celebrate the spirit of Alice Springs.

For lunch, I ventured to the Desert Lantern Restaurant, located on the CDU campus. This training restaurant offers hospitality and cookery students real-world experience, and I was eager to support their learning journey. The menu changes weekly, showcasing the students' creativity and skills. I opted for a delicious Australian dish, savoring the fresh, local ingredients and the impeccable presentation. It was heartwarming to see the students' passion and dedication, and I left feeling inspired by their commitment to their craft. I remember when Aisha was learning to cook, her enthusiasm was just as infectious, even if the results were sometimes… interesting!

As the day drew to a close, I decided to catch a movie at the Alice Springs Cinema. It’s always nice to unwind with a good film, and the cinema offered a welcome respite from the desert heat. The cinema has been a part of the Alice Springs community for nearly 30 years, transforming from a supermarket into a cultural hub. I settled into my seat, popcorn in hand, and enjoyed a couple of hours of cinematic bliss. The Alice Springs Cinema shows current films.

Before heading back to the Elkira Court Motel, I couldn't resist a nightcap at Bojangles Saloon & Dining Room. This iconic establishment is known for its quirky atmosphere, live music, and hearty meals. The saloon doors and saddle chairs added to the unique charm, and I felt like I had stepped back into the Wild West. I ordered a cold beer and listened to the live band, soaking in the lively ambiance and the friendly chatter of the locals. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery. Bojangles has a dance floor for patrons to enjoy. Bojangles Saloon started as a guesthouse in 1935.

Tomorrow, I’m planning to explore Simpsons Gap, the Araluen Cultural Precinct, and the Adelaide House Museum. I’m particularly excited about visiting the Araluen Cultural Precinct, as I’m keen to learn more about the Aboriginal heritage of the region. I might even pick up a sunhat, seeing as I forgot mine! As I reflect on my day in Alice Springs, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. This vibrant outback town has captured my heart with its rich history, unique culture, and warm hospitality. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine, creating an unforgettable travel experience. I am looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.

For dinner, I went to Fawlty's Fine Food, located in Alice Plaza. Fawlty's Fine Food has been a family owned and operated cafe for over 30 years. The cafe has affordable specials.
