Solo Exploration of Alice Springs’ Cultural and Natural Wonders
Day 3: Delving into Alice Springs' Soul: A Day of Discovery and Reflection
Explore Alice Springs' heart through its museums, stories, and outback spirit, revealing the town's unique character and history.
Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Future
Today was a day of deep dives into the heart of Alice Springs, a journey through stories of resilience, innovation, and the unique spirit of the outback. From pioneering women to ancient megafauna and the life-saving work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Alice Springs revealed layers of history and humanity that resonated deeply with me.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Watertank Café, a quirky spot known for its 'true blue, Aussie dining experience' and organic, home-grown approach to cooking. Surrounded by signature watertank fittings and bric-a-brac, I enjoyed a delicious breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the little cafes Hans and I used to frequent in Bamberg, each with its own unique charm and local flavor. I made a mental note to try to recreate their creamy chicken crepe when I get back home.

First on the itinerary was the Women's Museum of Australia and Old Gaol. Housed in the heritage-listed Old Gaol, the museum celebrates the achievements of Australian women, particularly those who pioneered Central Australia.

As I wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the courage and determination of these women, their stories echoing through the very walls of the old gaol. From women who were first in their fields to new migrants, their contributions painted a vivid picture of Australian history. The signature quilt, with over 340 prominent women represented, was a particularly moving testament to their collective impact. It was inspiring to see the recognition given to these extraordinary women, their legacies preserved and celebrated in such a meaningful way. The Old Gaol itself offered a sobering yet valuable historical perspective, providing insight into the lives of inmates and those who worked within its walls.
Sometimes, the most profound stories are found in the quiet corners of history, waiting to be discovered and shared.
Next, I ventured to Megafauna Central, a museum showcasing the unique megafauna that roamed Central Australia millions of years ago. I was immediately transported back millions of years, imagining a vastly different landscape filled with giant creatures. The museum displays fossils from the Alcoota Scientific Reserve, including the remains of the world's largest bird and a fearsome crocodile. It was fascinating to learn about these ancient animals and the environment they inhabited. The interactive exhibits made it engaging for all ages, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at the scale of prehistoric life in Central Australia.

Lunch was at Saltbush Restaurant, located in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. This restaurant is renowned for its contemporary Australian dining, featuring fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced produce, with unique Australian bush food as the foundation of its innovative menu. The neutral tones and earthy textures created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed a delicious meal that highlighted the flavors of the region. I opted for the baked whole NT baby barramundi, and it was exquisite. The restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients resonated with my own interest in sustainable living, and it was a pleasure to support a business that values the environment and the community.

In the afternoon, I visited the Royal Flying Doctor Service Alice Springs Tourist Facility. Housed in Alice's original RFDS base, the facility tells the heroic tales of the service in Central Australia since 1939. The hologram presentation of the Reverend John Flynn, the founder of the RFDS, was particularly moving. It brought to life the history and importance of the RFDS in providing medical care to those living in remote areas. Experiencing a virtual reality flight as an RFDS patient gave me a profound appreciation for the challenges and dedication of the doctors and nurses who serve the outback communities. The facility also showcased the decommissioned radio rooms and historical medical supplies, offering a glimpse into the early days of this vital service. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience and ingenuity of the Australian spirit.

Before dinner, I stopped by Red Kangaroo Books, the only independent bookshop within 1500kms. As a lover of literature, I couldn't resist browsing the shelves and discovering new authors. The shop had a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books, including many works in Aboriginal languages. I picked up a few books by local writers, eager to learn more about the region's stories and perspectives. It reminded me of the small bookshops in Al Ain where I used to spend hours immersed in different worlds. I even learned that there is a 'Kitschmas' event happening at Red Kangaroo Books on November 22, celebrating the 3rd birthday of Clear Mind Press.

Dinner was at Barra on Todd Restaurant and Bar, set in a relaxed, tropical resort-style atmosphere. The restaurant offers a range of local bush food-inspired flavors and international dishes, and I enjoyed a delicious meal while soaking in the ambiance. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection. The poolside bar was stocked with an array of wines and craft beers, and the family-friendly environment made it a welcoming spot for everyone.
