A Day of Outback Exploration

Today was all about diving deeper into what makes Alice Springs tick. From historical walks to fascinating museums and even a bit of local shopping, I wanted to soak up as much of the town's unique character as possible. It's amazing how much a single day can reveal about a place, and I'm excited to share my experiences.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Page 27 Cafe. This place is a gem! Tucked away, it has this quirky, bohemian vibe that I absolutely loved. I opted for their roasted granola bowl with a side of their famous iced coffee. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. The coffee, served with a scoop of ice cream, was a delightful treat, and the granola bowl was packed with fresh flavors. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel at home, surrounded by friendly faces and funky decor.

With a spring in my step, I headed to the Alice Springs Discovery Walkway. This self-guided tour is a fantastic way to get acquainted with the town's history and landmarks. The walkway meanders through the heart of Alice Springs, highlighting significant buildings and historical sites. It’s a leisurely stroll, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere and learning about the events that shaped the town. I found myself pausing frequently, reading the informational plaques, and imagining what life must have been like in the early days of Alice Springs. It really gave me a sense of connection to the past and a deeper appreciation for the resilience of the people who built this community.

Next on my list was the Museum of Central Australia, located within the Araluen Arts Centre. This museum is a treasure trove of information about the region's natural and geological history. From meteorite fragments to fossils and displays of the creatures that inhabit the area, it's a fascinating journey through time. I was particularly intrigued by the replica of the ancient Alcoota waterhole, which was home to giant freshwater crocodiles and the largest bird that ever lived. It’s mind-boggling to think about the megafauna that once roamed this land. The museum also houses the Strehlow Research Centre, which holds an important collection of film, sound, and archival records related to Indigenous ceremonial life. Although the centre is currently closed to the public, knowing that such a valuable resource exists here adds another layer of depth to the cultural significance of Alice Springs.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to walk its paths and listen to its stories.
After immersing myself in history and culture, I decided to embrace the natural beauty of the region with a short hike on the eastern end of the Larapinta Trail - Eastern End. While I wasn't prepared for a multi-day trek, I wanted to experience a taste of this iconic trail. I chose a section that offered stunning views without being too strenuous. The landscape was breathtaking – rugged red cliffs, spinifex-covered hills, and the vast expanse of the outback stretching out before me. It was a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty that defines Central Australia. Even a short walk on the Larapinta Trail is enough to appreciate the challenges and rewards that long-distance hikers experience. I made a mental note to return one day and tackle a longer section of the trail, perhaps with Hans and Aisha. I think they would really enjoy it.

By this time, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to Warung Makan Alice for lunch. This Indonesian restaurant is a local favorite, and I was eager to try it. The outdoor setting was relaxed and inviting, with umbrellas providing shade from the sun. I ordered the Nasi Goreng and a refreshing Cendol. The Nasi Goreng was packed with flavor, and the Cendol, a sweet and icy coconut milk drink, was the perfect way to cool down. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. It felt like a little piece of Indonesia in the heart of the Australian outback.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping at Alice Plaza. I was hoping to find a sunhat, as I realized I had forgotten to pack one. The plaza had a variety of stores, including clothing shops, a pharmacy, and a Telstra shop. While I didn't find a sunhat that day, I enjoyed browsing the local shops and soaking up the atmosphere. I did stop by Go Vita Health Foods to pick up some sunscreen, which was definitely a necessity in the desert climate.

As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at The Juicy Rump. This restaurant is known for its generous meals and relaxed atmosphere. I sat on the spacious deck, enjoying the views of the MacDonnell Ranges as the sun began to set. I ordered a steak, cooked to perfection, and a side of roasted vegetables. The Juicy Rump is a great place to unwind after a busy day of exploring, and I savored every bite of my meal. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with discovery and cultural immersion.

I discovered that there is a Christmas party happening tonight at the Alice Springs Convention Centre. But I think I will pass. I'm not feeling very festive, and I want to be well-rested for tomorrow's adventures. I'm planning to visit John Flynn's Grave Historical Reserve, the Earth Sanctuary World Nature Centre and Corroboree Rock Conservation Reserve. It sounds like it will be another day of exploring the natural and cultural wonders of this unique region.

Before heading back to the Elkira Court Motel, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Alice Springs had surprised me with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes. It's a place that gets under your skin, inviting you to explore its hidden corners and connect with its people. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique part of Australia, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Oh, and I must remember to buy a sunhat tomorrow! The desert sun is no joke, and I definitely need to protect myself better. Perhaps I'll find one at one of tomorrow's destinations.

I am also looking forward to having breakfast at the Watertank Café tomorrow. I read some good reviews about it and I am excited to try it out.
