Saturday Strolls and Outback Tales
Today was one of those perfectly unscripted days that travel dreams are made of. No rigid plans, just a gentle nudge from the itinerary and a willingness to wander. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you simply allow yourself to be led by curiosity. After nearly two weeks in Alice Springs, I feel like I'm finally getting into the rhythm of this unique outback town.
My day began with a leisurely breakfast at Page 27 Cafe. Hans would have loved this place; it has that quirky, laid-back vibe that he always appreciates. I ordered their roasted granola bowl with a flat white. The coffee was robust, just the way I like it, and the granola bowl was a delightful mix of textures and flavors. It’s the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, nursing your coffee and watching the world go by. It reminded me of our favorite cafes back in Bamberg, where the pace is slow, and the coffee is strong. I made a mental note to try and recreate the granola bowl when I get back home; Aisha would adore it.
With a full stomach and a caffeinated buzz, I set off to explore some of Alice Springs' green spaces. First on my list was Stuart Park. It’s named after John McDouall Stuart. I took a moment to appreciate the monument dedicated to him. It was a good spot to sit and reflect on the history of exploration in this region.

Next, I ambled over to Trevor Reid Park. The park offered a tranquil escape from the midday sun. I found a bench under a shady tree and watched families enjoying picnics, children playing, and locals simply relaxing. The park is named after Trevor John Reid, who was the Superintendent of Parks for the NT Administration and Alice Springs Council. He clearly left a lasting legacy in this community. I learned that he was also a celebrated sportsman. It’s these little details about the people who shaped a place that I find so fascinating.

Parks are the lungs of a city, offering respite and a connection to nature amidst the urban sprawl.
After my park explorations, I decided to embrace the 'Alice Springs Landmark' designation and snap a photo at the iconic 'Welcome to Alice Springs' sign. It felt like a rite of passage, a visual stamp on my journey.

Lunch beckoned, and I was in the mood for something spicy. Based on a recommendation I stumbled upon, I headed to Indian Chef Restaurant & Take Away. I ordered the butter chicken with garlic naan. The flavors were rich and comforting, a welcome change from some of the more 'outback' fare I’ve been indulging in. I overheard another patron raving about the Family Pack Biryani, so I’ll have to try that next time.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to immerse myself in the local pub scene. The Gillen Club was on my list, and it seemed like the perfect spot to unwind. It was lively without being overwhelming, and I found a comfortable spot at the bar. I struck up a conversation with a few locals, who were eager to share their stories and recommendations. It’s these spontaneous interactions that often become the most cherished memories of my travels. They told me about some of the club's events and its commitment to the community. I learned that the Gillen Club has been around since 1972.

I enjoyed a couple of local beers, soaking in the atmosphere and feeling a sense of connection to this unique place. It reminded me of the small-town pubs in Germany, where everyone knows each other, and the sense of community is palpable. I was tempted by the Sunday Roast Dinner, but I resisted knowing that I will be flying out tomorrow.
For dinner, I opted for something quick and easy at Feeling Peckish. I had a burger. It was exactly what I needed after a day of exploring. I’ve noticed that 'Peckish' is a common expression here, a charming reminder that I'm a long way from Bamberg.

As I walked back to the Elkira Court Motel, the stars began to pepper the night sky. I thought about Hans and Aisha. I miss them dearly, but I know that this solo adventure is something I needed to do for myself. This trip has reminded me of the importance of embracing the unexpected, of slowing down and savoring the simple moments. It's a lesson I hope to carry with me long after I leave Alice Springs.

Tomorrow marks the end of my Alice Springs adventure. I plan to visit The Gap, Hartley Street School, and the Totem Theatre. I’ll grab breakfast at Watertank Café and lunch at Desert Dawgs. In the afternoon, I’ll do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Mad Harry's before heading to Gap View Hotel for a farewell dinner. It’s hard to believe my time here is almost over. While I’m eager to return home to my family, I know that a piece of my heart will forever remain in this captivating corner of the world.
Until tomorrow,
Maryam
