Exploring the Medieval Charm of San Gimignano
Day 7: Unveiling San Gimignano: A Day Amidst Walls, Wonders, and Medieval Mysteries
Explore San Gimignano's ancient walls, monumental trees, and intriguing torture museum with a blend of history and culinary delights.
Whispers of the Past in San Gimignano
Today, Lena and I delved deeper into the heart of San Gimignano, seeking to uncover more of its historical layers. It was a day of contrasts, from the imposing Mura della città, the city walls, to the solemn Museum of Torture, each experience adding a unique thread to our understanding of this Tuscan gem. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze that made exploring the town even more enjoyable.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Trattoria Antica Macelleria. The reviews I'd read mentioned their excellent pasta and welcoming atmosphere, and they didn't disappoint. I opted for the grilled vegetables, while Lena chose the pappardelle. Sipping my coffee, I felt a surge of excitement for the day ahead, eager to explore more of what San Gimignano had to offer. It's funny, I almost forgot my umbrella back at the hotel again, but Lena reminded me. I really need to get better at remembering these things.
First on our agenda was a walk along the Mura della città, the city walls. These ancient walls have been the protective shield of San Gimignano for centuries. As we walked along the ramparts, I imagined what it must have been like to defend the city from invaders. The views from the walls were stunning, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. The rolling hills, dotted with vineyards and olive groves, stretched out before us like a painting. It was easy to see why San Gimignano has been a coveted stronghold throughout history.

The stones of San Gimignano whisper tales of resilience, artistry, and the enduring spirit of its people.
Next, we sought out the Bagolaro di San Gimignano - Albero monumentale, a monumental tree. This majestic tree, with its grand canopy, has stood for approximately 150 years. It stands tall at 25 meters, with a trunk circumference of 4 meters. It's located near the archaeological museum and library. The tree’s presence was calming, a reminder of the enduring power of nature amidst the historical architecture. Lena, ever the nature enthusiast, was particularly taken by the tree's impressive size and the peaceful atmosphere surrounding it. We learned that the Bagolaro is also known as the 'spaccasassi' because of its powerful root system, which can break through rocks. The tree's wood was once used to make tools, and its fruits are a favorite among birds. It was a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such an ancient and resilient being.

Our exploration took a darker turn as we ventured into the Museum of Torture. Nestled within the medieval streets, this museum showcases an extensive collection of torture devices and instruments dating back centuries. While the subject matter was unsettling, it was also a thought-provoking experience that challenged our perceptions of morality and historical context. The museum aimed to combat violence by showing how human beings have been tortured throughout the centuries. The exhibitions served as reminders that torture still exists in different forms today, urging us not to be complacent.

The displays were meticulously curated, with detailed descriptions in multiple languages that enhanced the educational value of the visit. From the Maiden of Nuremberg to various other gruesome devices, each exhibit told a story of human cruelty and suffering. It was a sobering reminder of the darker aspects of human history and the importance of upholding human rights. As we walked through the exhibits, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease and sadness. It was a stark contrast to the beauty and charm of the town outside, but it was an important reminder of the need for compassion and justice in the world.
After the museum, we needed something to lift our spirits, so we headed to Made intaly for a bit of shopping. I picked up a few souvenirs for my family back in Canada. Lena found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that she couldn't resist. It was a welcome distraction from the somber atmosphere of the museum, and we enjoyed browsing the local crafts and products.

For lunch, we decided to try Ristorante Sosta sulla Francigena San gimignano. We opted for the terrace, where we could enjoy panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. The restaurant is known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine, and we were eager to sample some of the local specialties. I ordered the pici pasta with wild boar ragu, while Lena chose the ribollita, a hearty vegetable and bread soup. The food was delicious, and the views were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of exploring.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Osteria Baccano for dinner. This charming osteria is known for its cozy atmosphere and traditional Tuscan dishes. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by the Florentine steak. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and we savored every bite. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end our day in San Gimignano.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our last day in San Gimignano, we plan to visit Viewpoint San Gimignano for one last panoramic view of the town and surrounding countryside. We also intend to explore SanGimignano1300, a museum that recreates the town as it was in the 14th century. Finally, we'll visit Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, a beautiful church with stunning frescoes. For dinner, we're planning to try Ristorante da Pode, known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine.
We might also stop by Bar Le Torri - San Gimignano for a nightcap before heading back to the hotel. It will be a bittersweet day, as we say goodbye to this charming medieval town. But I know that the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. As I reflect on our day, I am struck by the contrasts that define San Gimignano. It is a town of beauty and darkness, of history and modernity, of tranquility and turmoil. It is a place that challenges and inspires, that captivates and intrigues. And it is a place that I will never forget.
Back at Hotel Bel Soggiorno, Lena and I sat on our balcony, sipping Vernaccia wine and watching the sunset over the Tuscan hills. The sky was ablaze with color, and the air was filled with the sounds of cicadas and church bells. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. As I looked out at the landscape, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful corner of the world. I am also grateful to be sharing these experiences with Lena. As much as I love solo travel, there's something special about exploring a new place with someone you love. We'll soon be heading back to Germany, but I know that a part of me will always remain in San Gimignano. Tomorrow we bid farewell to this charming medieval town, but the memories we've created here will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Time to charge my camera and journal again, ready for the final day of exploration.
