Pinhão Perfection: A Day in the Douro Valley

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of the Douro Valley, and Pinhão did not disappoint. From breathtaking viewpoints to family-run vineyards, every moment was a testament to the region's beauty and charm. I was especially excited to explore more of the region with my friends, and to share these experiences with you all.

Our day began with breakfast at Douro Velho. While the company was great, the reviews I read online were accurate, and the service was a little slow. Still, being right on the water made up for it, and it was a great way to start the day.

From there, we set off to explore Pinhão Douro Vinhateiro. The village is nestled among terraced vineyards, and the views of the Douro River winding through the valley are simply captivating. It’s easy to see why this area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Next on our list was Miradouro da Foz do Tedo, a viewpoint that promised panoramic vistas. The drive up was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the valley below. When we arrived, the view was even more spectacular than we had imagined. The Douro River snaked through the landscape, framed by rolling hills covered in vineyards. It was the perfect spot for some photos, and we spent a good while just soaking in the scenery.

After the stunning viewpoint, we headed to Quinta do Jalloto - Family vineyards for a wine tasting. This family-run winery has been around since 1873, and you can feel the history and passion in every glass. António, the owner, greeted us warmly and shared stories about the vineyard and the winemaking process. The view from the terrace was incredible, possibly the best in the Douro Valley, with 180-degree views of the valley and vineyards. We sampled several of their wines, including a delicious red wine from 2019. Of course, we also had to try their olive oil, which was equally impressive. The whole experience felt authentic and personal, a true highlight of the day.

Lunch was at Manjar do Douro in Lamego, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant had a comfortable atmosphere and the service was attentive. I opted for a traditional Portuguese dish, while Lena tried the seafood. We paired our meals with a local wine, and everything was delicious.

In the late afternoon, we made our way back to Pinhão for dinner at The River. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, with great food and a lovely ambiance. I enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak, while Lena savored the fresh fish. The service was impeccable, making it a memorable dining experience.

To cap off the evening, we decided to visit Douro Sky Lounge for a nightcap. The rooftop bar offered stunning views of the Douro Valley under the stars. We sipped on cocktails, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with discoveries and delights.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to experience such incredible places with my friends. The Douro Valley has a way of capturing your heart, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Viewpoint Sebolido and Quinta das Carvalhas. I'm particularly excited about Quinta das Carvalhas, as I've heard their vineyards are among the most impressive in the region. We'll also have breakfast at Cantina de Ventozelo, lunch at Douro In, and dinner at Tasca da Quinta. Before heading back to Gaia Residence, we'll stop by Loja Tradições to pick up some local souvenirs.
