Exploring the Scenic Douro Valley with Friends
Day 1: First Day Douro Valley: Port, Views, and Culinary Delights
Embark on a scenic journey through Gaia, savoring port wine at Quinta do Bomfim, and indulging in Douro's culinary treasures with friends.
A Warm Welcome to the Douro Valley
After months of planning, Lena and I, along with our friends, finally arrived in the Douro Valley. Leaving the familiar streets of Heidelberg behind, I was eager to immerse myself in Portugal's stunning landscapes and rich wine culture. This trip marks not only a personal adventure but also the beginning of a series of blog posts I'm excited to share with you all. It's a blend of leisure and work, balancing my software development tasks with capturing the essence of this beautiful region.
Our journey began with a flight from Frankfurt to Porto. From there, we picked up our rental car and drove to Gaia Residence, our home for the next nine days. The residence is modern and comfortable, providing the perfect base for our explorations. After settling in, we were ready to dive into our first day's itinerary.

A Morning in Gaia Porto
Our first stop was Gaia Porto, a vibrant area known for its port wine cellars and stunning views of Porto across the Douro River. The September weather was pleasantly warm, with temperatures around 26°C, making it ideal for walking along the waterfront. We took a leisurely stroll along the Cais de Gaia, admiring the colorful buildings and soaking in the lively atmosphere.

We admired Porto from across the river, taking in the views from Jardim do Morro. We considered taking the Teleférico de Gaia, a cable car that offers panoramic views, but decided to save it for another day. Instead, we enjoyed a relaxing walk along the riverbank, taking in the sights and sounds of this bustling area. I made sure to take plenty of photos, eager to share the beauty of Gaia with my blog readers.
The Douro Valley is more than just a destination; it's an experience that awakens the senses and enriches the soul.
Breakfast at A Ver O Douro
For breakfast, we headed to A Ver O Douro in Marco de Canaveses. The restaurant offered a delightful start to our day with traditional Portuguese flavors and a charming ambiance. I opted for the *Nacos de Carne Arouquense*, while Lena enjoyed the *Bolinhos de Bacalhau*. The view from the restaurant was beautiful, overlooking the Douro River, making our breakfast even more enjoyable. The service was friendly and efficient, and the prices were reasonable. It was a perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploring.

An Afternoon at Quinta do Bomfim
Next on our list was Quinta do Bomfim, a renowned winery with a rich history and stunning vineyards. As a software developer who enjoys the occasional glass of home-brewed beer, I was particularly excited to learn about the winemaking process. The tour, available in English, was both informative and engaging. We explored the vineyards, the old cellar built in 1896, and a small museum that told the story of the Symington family, who have managed the estate for five generations.

The highlight of our visit was the port wine tasting on the terrace, which offered breathtaking views of the Douro River. We sampled three vintage port wines, each with its unique flavor profile. I learned about the different grape varieties and the aging process, gaining a newfound appreciation for the art of port wine making. Lena, who appreciates a good wine, was equally impressed. We even considered a vineyard walk to get a closer look at the terraced vineyards, but decided to relax and enjoy the view instead.
Lunch at Castas e Pratos
For lunch, we chose Castas e Pratos in Peso da Régua, a restaurant known for its modern gastronomy and stunning views of the Douro. The restaurant is located in a historic railway warehouse, adding to its charm. We started with local white wine, which the staff attentively described to us. For the main course, I had the veal with mushroom risotto, while Lena chose the asparagus risotto. The food was exceptional, blending traditional flavors with innovative techniques.

We couldn't resist trying the “O Ovo” for dessert—a white chocolate egg filled with passion fruit mousse. The tartness of the passion fruit perfectly complemented the sweetness of the white chocolate, creating a sublime culinary experience. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was both cool and cozy. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal with friends.
Evening at In Douro Bar
As the sun began to set, we made our way to In Douro Bar, seeking a place to unwind after a day of exploration. The bar offered a relaxed atmosphere with local drinks and stunning views along the Douro River. We sipped on local wines, enjoying the vibrant nightlife and the company of our friends. The Douro Valley offers a unique blend of traditional Portuguese charm and modern entertainment, and In Douro Bar was the perfect example of this.

Final Thoughts on Day 1
Our first day in the Douro Valley was a resounding success. From the vibrant streets of Gaia Porto to the historic vineyards of Quinta do Bomfim and the culinary delights of Castas e Pratos, we experienced the best of what this region has to offer. The warm September weather added to the charm, making it a truly unforgettable day. As I reflect on our adventures, I'm filled with excitement for what tomorrow holds. We'll be venturing into the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, taking in the views from Miradouro Casal De Loivos, and exploring Quinta do Vesúvio. I'm also looking forward to trying Bistro Terrace - Quinta do Tedo for breakfast, Toca da Raposa for lunch, and DOC - Chef Rui Paula for dinner. Plus, a stop at Douro Gourmet for some local shopping. I can't wait to share those experiences with you all as well. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploring the scenic Douro Valley with friends.
Until tomorrow,
Matthew
P.S. I almost forgot to mention, I realized I left my travel adapter back in Heidelberg! Lena reminded me that I also forgot my light rain jacket. Guess I'll be making a stop at a local shop tomorrow.
