Solo Adventure in Jotunheimen: Exploring Norway's Wilderness
Day 7: Delving into Caves and Heights: A Day of Discovery in Jotunheimen
Explore the depths of Dumdalen Grotten and soar to the heights of Sognefjellet, uncovering Jotunheimen's hidden gems.
Beneath the Surface, Above the Clouds
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the shadowy depths of ancient caves to the sun-kissed heights of panoramic viewpoints. It's amazing how much the Norwegian landscape can change in just a few hours, and I was eager to experience it all. Armed with my camera and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore two very different sides of Jotunheimen National Park.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Sjodalstugu. I fueled up with some traditional Norwegian fare, including a strong coffee and cinnamon rolls, while enjoying the lovely view. Sjodalstugu offers fresh and traditional food, basing their meals on local farmings. With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards my first destination: Dumdalen Grotten.

The drive to Dumdalen was stunning. The lush, green valley was a stark contrast to the rocky terrain I had been hiking through the past few days. The promise of exploring caves added an element of mystery to the day. I parked near Jotunheimen Fjellstue, about 7 km from the caves.
Journey into the Earth: Dumdalen Grotten
The Dumdalen Grotten caves are a series of limestone caves formed over thousands of years by the Dumma River. The caves are about 10,000 years old. I had read about the guided tours available, and while I typically prefer to explore on my own, I decided that a guide would be essential for navigating the cave system safely. I booked a tour with Aktiv i Lom, a local company specializing in outdoor adventures.

The meeting point was a short drive from Lom, and after a brief introduction from our guide, we began our descent into the earth. The entrance to the caves was hidden amongst a field of flowers, a stark contrast to the darkness that awaited us below. As I stepped into the cave, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the sounds of the outside world faded away.
Inside, the caves were a labyrinth of narrow passages and large chambers. Our guide provided helmets and headlamps, which were essential for navigating the slippery and uneven terrain. The rock formations were incredible, shaped by centuries of water erosion. There were stalactites and stalagmites, creating a surreal, otherworldly landscape. In Dumdalen, you can see strange rock formations, quietness and powerful rivers cascading interchangeably.
At times, we had to crawl on our hands and knees to squeeze through tight spaces, while other chambers opened up into cathedral-like rooms. The silence within the caves was profound, broken only by the sound of dripping water and our own breathing. It was an eerie but exhilarating experience.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the darkest places.
Our guide pointed out various features of the caves, explaining how the limestone was formed and how the water continues to shape the caverns. He also shared stories of past explorers and the local legends surrounding the caves. I learned that the caves are home to several species of bats, although we didn't spot any during our tour.
Emerging from the caves after a few hours, I felt a sense of accomplishment and awe. The Dumdalen Grotten was a truly unique experience, a chance to witness the power of nature at work over millennia. Covered in mud and grinning from ear to ear, I was ready for the next adventure.
Before heading to my next destination, I stopped by Extra Lom , a local grocery store, to grab some snacks and water for the afternoon. It's always a good idea to stock up on essentials, especially when you're planning on spending time in the mountains. The store had a great selection of local produce and traditional Norwegian snacks.

Reaching for the Sky: Sognefjellet Viewing Point
With supplies replenished, I set off towards Sognefjellet Viewing Point, the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe. The drive was nothing short of spectacular, with winding roads climbing steadily upwards, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As I gained altitude, the vegetation changed, from lush green forests to barren, rocky terrain.

Sognefjellet is more than just a road; it's a journey through the heart of Jotunheimen. The pass has been an important transport artery, linking the coast and inland areas. The air was noticeably cooler, and I could see patches of snow clinging to the higher peaks. The weather in Jotunheimen in June is usually mild, but it's essential to be prepared for sudden changes.
The Sognefjellet Viewing Point is located along the scenic Sognefjellet mountain road. The viewpoint Vegaskjelet is designed as a lay-by, right where the road turns to Leirvassbu lodge in the Sognefjellet mountains.
As I reached the viewing point, I was greeted by a breathtaking vista. The viewpoint is placed directly off the car park, to rise above the trees and the undergrowth. From this unique platform, I took in the 2,000-metre peaks of Skarsnebb and Steinetind and the valley Leirdalen.
The mountains stretched out as far as the eye could see, their snow-capped peaks piercing the sky. The valley below was a patchwork of green fields and sparkling lakes. I could have spent hours simply gazing at the view, soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the Norwegian wilderness.
I walked along the trails near the viewpoint, taking photos and admiring the alpine flora. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional call of a bird. I felt a sense of peace and connection to nature, a feeling that is hard to find in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
It was amazing how different the landscape looked from this vantage point compared to the depths of the Dumdalen Grotten. Both experiences offered a unique perspective on the natural beauty of Jotunheimen, and I felt grateful to have experienced both in a single day.
A Taste of Local Flavors
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Skeistua , a restaurant known for its traditional Norwegian cuisine and cozy atmosphere. Skeistua is located nearby Skeikampen church. I decided to treat myself to a hearty meal before heading back to my campsite. Skeistua is an original Norwegian log house from 1850, decorated with rustic furniture and antiques.

I ordered Rømmegrøt, a traditional sour cream porridge, and a side of cured meats with flatbread. The food was delicious and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploring. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and fellow diners.
Alternatively, I could have gone to SmakeMeir for dinner. SmakeMeir has a brand-new restaurant at ViteMeir, offering a delightful and atmospheric dining experience. They serve both cold and warm food.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. From the depths of the Dumdalen Grotten to the heights of Sognefjellet, Jotunheimen had revealed its many faces. It was a day of contrasts, a journey of discovery, and a reminder of the incredible beauty that exists in the natural world.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Rondane National Park and visit The Hand [TBD]. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in this stunning corner of Norway. For now, I'll rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but the best journeys are those that take you both above and below.
