Adventure in Norway's Finnmark Plateau
Day 2: Chasing Waterfalls and Midnight Sun: A Day on the Finnmark Plateau
Discover the raw beauty of Norway's Finnmark Plateau, from Pikefossen Falls to Komsatoppen's views, under the enchanting midnight sun.
Embracing the Arctic Wilderness
Today was a symphony of nature's wonders, a day where the rugged beauty of the Finnmark Plateau truly captivated my senses. From the cascading waters of Pikefossen to the panoramic vistas from Komsatoppen, every moment was a testament to the untouched allure of this Arctic landscape. The midnight sun painted the sky with hues I'd only dreamt of, making our adventures even more magical.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Fisherman's Cabin. It's become our little ritual, fueling up with simple, comforting food before venturing out into the wild. There's something incredibly grounding about starting the day this way, a gentle reminder of the simple pleasures in life, especially when you're surrounded by such raw, untamed beauty.
With our bellies full and spirits high, Hans and I set off to explore Pikefossen falls [i]. I’d read about Pikefossen, also known as Nieidagorzi in Sami, and its significance to the Sami people. The falls are not particularly tall, about 8 meters high, but incredibly wide, stretching 75-100 meters across the Kautokeino-Alta River. The sheer volume of water rushing over the rocks was mesmerizing, a powerful display of nature's force. The Sami name, Nieidagorzi, translates to Girl Falls, stemming from a legend about a servant girl and a reindeer herd. I found myself pondering the story, imagining the girl's plight and the harsh realities of life in this remote region. The falls have played an important role in shaping human habitation in Finnmarksvidda for thousands of years. It's humbling to stand in a place with such deep historical roots, feeling the echoes of generations past.

The raw beauty of the Finnmark Plateau is a stark reminder of nature's power and the simple joys of disconnecting from the everyday.
After Pikefossen, we decided to hike to Komsatoppen Viewpoint. The hike was invigorating, a moderate climb that rewarded us with increasingly stunning views of Alta and the surrounding landscape. As we ascended, the terrain transformed, revealing the diverse beauty of the Finnmark Plateau. The midnight sun, which has been a constant companion since we arrived, cast a golden glow over everything, softening the rugged edges of the landscape and creating an ethereal atmosphere. I felt an overwhelming sense of peace, a feeling of being completely present in the moment.
Reaching the summit of Komsatoppen was breathtaking. The panoramic views stretched out before us, a tapestry of rolling hills, pristine lakes, and winding rivers. The vastness of the Finnmark Plateau was truly awe-inspiring, a reminder of the immense scale of nature. We spent a long time at the top, simply soaking in the beauty and marveling at the midnight sun. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate our decision to embrace a more sustainable and eco-friendly travel style. Leaving only footprints and taking only photographs feels like the most responsible way to experience such a precious environment.

As evening approached, we made our way back to the Fisherman's Cabin for dinner. We shared stories with fellow travelers, swapping tips and experiences. There’s a unique camaraderie that develops when you're all sharing the same adventure, a sense of connection that transcends borders and backgrounds.
Later, after dinner, we ventured out to Nordlysbaren. The bar was cozy and inviting, with a lively atmosphere fueled by local music. Sipping on a local brew, we enjoyed the music and the company, feeling a sense of belonging in this remote corner of the world. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion that encapsulates everything I love about travel.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Sami culture with a visit to Midt Finnmark Siida and De Samiske Samlinger. I'm particularly excited to learn more about the Sami way of life, their traditions, and their deep connection to this land. We might also pop into The Northern Lights Giftshop & Cinema, perhaps to find a little something to remind us of this magical place. As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences of today and anticipation for the adventures that await us tomorrow. The Finnmark Plateau has already captured a piece of my heart, and I can't wait to see what else it has in store.
It makes me think about how much Svendborg, my hometown, shaped my love for the sea and nature. Perhaps that's why I feel so drawn to places like the Finnmark Plateau, where the landscape is both rugged and serene. It's a reminder of the simple beauty that exists in the world, a beauty that's worth preserving and protecting.
