A Day of Trails and Treasures

Today was a day of breathtaking vistas and charming discoveries as Hans and I traversed the path from Corniglia to Manarola. It's amazing how much richer an experience becomes when you trade the train for a leisurely hike, allowing the landscape to unfold at its own pace. The crisp February air and the promise of Ligurian delights kept our spirits high as we set off to explore.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Il Grottino in Corniglia. The aroma of freshly baked focaccia and strong Italian coffee filled the cozy space. We shared a simple yet satisfying meal of local cheeses, olives, and crusty bread, fueling up for our hike ahead. It's these unhurried moments, savoring local flavors, that truly connect me to a place. It reminded me of the simple joys of a Danish breakfast back home in Svendborg, though with a distinctly Italian twist.

Equipped with our trusty cameras and a renewed sense of adventure, we embarked on Sentiero 7A, the trail winding its way from Corniglia to Volastra and onwards to Manarola. The path was more challenging than we anticipated, a mix of steep inclines and uneven stone steps. I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes, though I did momentarily regret forgetting my sunglasses – the winter sun reflecting off the sea was surprisingly intense!

As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly spectacular. The terraced vineyards clinging to the cliffsides were a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the Ligurian people. These terraces, supported by dry stone walls, have been cultivated for centuries, creating a unique and stunning landscape. It was fascinating to learn about the history of these agricultural practices and how they have shaped the region.

The journey, not the destination, is the reward.

Reaching Volastra, a charming hilltop village, was a welcome respite. We paused to catch our breath and admire the panoramic views stretching along the coastline. The village itself was a maze of narrow, winding streets and colorful houses, each with its own unique character. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, capturing the essence of this hidden gem. I even spotted a few locals knitting on their doorsteps, which gave me a pang of inspiration for my own knitting projects. Perhaps I'll try to incorporate some of the vibrant colors of Cinque Terre into my next design.

Continuing our journey towards Manarola, the trail descended gradually, offering ever-changing perspectives of the coastline. The crisp air carried the scent of sea salt and wild herbs, invigorating our senses. We passed through groves of olive trees and patches of fragrant rosemary, feeling completely immersed in the natural beauty of the region. Hans, ever the observant one, pointed out a variety of birds flitting among the branches, their songs adding to the symphony of the landscape.

As we approached Manarola, the village came into view, clinging precariously to the cliffs above the harbor. The colorful houses, stacked one upon another, created a vibrant tapestry against the backdrop of the azure sea. It was a truly breathtaking sight, one that I knew would be etched in my memory forever.

Before exploring the village, we made our way to the Manarola Overlook Viewpoint, seeking that perfect postcard-worthy shot. It did not disappoint. From this vantage point, the entire village unfolded before us, a scene of unparalleled beauty. We spent a few moments simply soaking it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such a remarkable place.

With appetites whetted by our hike, we descended into Manarola in search of a satisfying lunch. Trattoria dal Billy, perched high above the village, beckoned with its promise of fresh seafood and stunning views. We managed to snag a table on the terrace, overlooking the harbor and the sparkling Ligurian Sea. The seafood pasta was divine, the flavors of the sea mingling perfectly with the al dente pasta. Hans enjoyed a plate of grilled calamari, declaring it the best he'd ever tasted. The service was warm and attentive, adding to the overall delightful experience.

After lunch, we wandered through the narrow streets of Manarola, exploring its hidden corners and soaking up its unique atmosphere. We stumbled upon Cinque Terre Trekking, a charming shop offering a variety of local crafts and souvenirs. Though I didn't find any knitting supplies, I did pick up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic tile depicting the village skyline. It will serve as a lovely reminder of our time here.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to Nessun Dorma, a popular wine bar known for its stunning views and delicious bruschetta. Fortunately, we were able to reserve a spot using their app. We ordered a platter of assorted bruschetta, each topped with fresh, local ingredients, and a bottle of crisp Cinque Terre white wine. Sitting on the terrace, overlooking the illuminated village, we toasted to another day of adventure and discovery. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Vernazza, another of Cinque Terre's iconic villages. Our itinerary includes visiting the Chiesa di San Francesco and the Port of Vernazza, and perhaps indulging in a cocktail at the Blue Marlin Bar. I'm already looking forward to the new adventures that await! I am also hoping to find a gear shop so that I can replace my portable phone charger and sunglasses that I forgot back in Berlin.

As I reflect on today's journey, I'm struck by the resilience and beauty of this region. The Cinque Terre is more than just a collection of picturesque villages; it's a living testament to the power of human ingenuity and the enduring connection between people and the land. It's a place that nourishes the soul and inspires the imagination, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to experience its magic.

I am so happy to share these experiences with you, dear readers! Ciao!
