A Vernazza State of Mind

Today was all about Vernazza, one of the five jewels that make up Cinque Terre. As a translator, I find myself drawn to places where language and culture intertwine, and Vernazza, with its colorful buildings and rich history, was certainly a place where stories seemed to whisper from every corner. Hans and I set out to explore this picturesque village, eager to discover its unique charm.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Casello. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our exploration. I savored a warm pastry while Hans enjoyed a classic cappuccino. Fuelled up, we were ready to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Vernazza.

We strolled towards the harbor, the heart of Vernazza. The scene was straight out of a painting: colorful houses clinging to the cliffs, fishing boats bobbing gently in the water, and the quaint piazza buzzing with life. Even in February, there was a palpable energy, a sense of community that warmed us from the inside out. It was easy to see why Vernazza is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Cinque Terre. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this enchanting place, knowing that even the best camera couldn't truly do it justice.

Our first stop was the Chiesa di San Francesco. This church, with its simple yet elegant facade, offered a tranquil escape from the lively harbor. Built in the 17th century, the church is now a venue for events and concerts organized by the municipality. Inside, the architecture was beautiful, and I found myself reflecting on the many hands that had shaped this village over the centuries. The adjacent convent, now the town hall, added to the sense of history and continuity.

The beauty of Vernazza lies not just in its picturesque views, but in the way it invites you to slow down and savor the simple moments.

Next, we wandered over to the Port of Vernazza. This small port is the only one in Cinque Terre besides Monterosso, and it’s a vital part of the village’s identity. Watching the local fishermen tending to their boats, I felt a deep connection to the maritime history of this place. The port has around 100 berths, and it was fascinating to see how seamlessly it blended with the ancient buildings surrounding it. The absence of modern facilities only added to its authentic charm.

For lunch, we decided on Il Pescato Cucinato, a tiny gem known for its fresh seafood. We shared a plate of fried anchovies and a seafood pasta dish, both bursting with the flavors of the Ligurian Sea. Eating outdoors, even in the cooler February air, was a delight, and we savored every bite while soaking in the atmosphere around us.

After lunch, we took a leisurely walk along Via Roma, Vernazza's main street. It was lined with shops selling local crafts, souvenirs, and regional delicacies. I couldn't resist buying a small, hand-painted ceramic house, a memento of our visit to this enchanting village. Hans, ever the practical one, picked up some local pesto to bring back to Berlin.

We also explored the Doria Castle, a medieval fortress that offered stunning panoramic views of Vernazza and the surrounding coastline. The climb up was a bit steep, but the view from the top was more than worth it. From there, we could see the colorful houses spreading amphitheatrically around the marina, the narrow alleys, and the steep stairways. It was a breathtaking sight that truly captured the essence of Cinque Terre.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves at the Blue Marlin Bar, a cozy spot overlooking the harbor. We ordered a couple of Aperol spritzes and watched as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we chatted with some locals, learning more about the history and culture of Vernazza.

For dinner, we had reservations at Belforte, a restaurant perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. The setting was magical, with the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks providing a soothing soundtrack to our meal. I enjoyed a delicious seafood risotto, while Hans opted for the grilled fish. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable.

As we walked back to our accommodation, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared today. Vernazza had captured our hearts with its beauty, its history, and its warm, welcoming spirit. It was a day of simple pleasures, of savoring the moment, and of connecting with the soul of Italy.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Monterosso al Mare. I'm particularly excited to see the Statua del Gigante and the Convent of the Capuchin Friars. We'll start our day with breakfast at La Taverna di Monterosso, followed by lunch at Miky. For dinner, we've booked a table at Ristorante L'Ancora della Tortuga. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Fabbrica D'Arte Monterosso.

As I sit here now, knitting a few rows on a new project inspired by the vibrant colors of Vernazza, I can't help but smile. This trip is turning out to be everything I had hoped for and more. It's a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of places.

I am so happy to be sharing this journey with Hans. His quiet observations and appreciation for the small details make every experience richer. He even tried a bit of knitting tonight, though I think he'll stick to software engineering.

The crisp February air and the sound of the Ligurian sea outside our window lull me to sleep. Goodnight from Vernazza!
