Exploring the Enchanting Villages of Cinque Terre
Day 7: Hiking Through History: Soviore Sanctuary and Coastal Views
Discover Cinque Terre's hidden gems: Hike to Soviore Sanctuary, explore Punta Mesco, and savor local flavors along the Ligurian coast.
A Day of Discovery Beyond the Cinque Terre Postcard
Today, Hans and I ventured beyond the iconic, colorful villages of Cinque Terre to explore the region's more secluded corners. Our journey was a blend of physical activity, historical immersion, and, of course, delightful culinary experiences. We traded the bustling harbors for tranquil trails, and I couldn't wait to share what we discovered.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Via Venti in Monterosso. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast, while Hans enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and cold cuts. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the trails!
Our first destination was Punta Mesco, a dramatic promontory marking the northwestern boundary of Cinque Terre. The trail wound its way through fragrant pine forests, offering glimpses of the coastline through the trees. The air was crisp and clean, with a hint of sea salt. It was a moderate climb, and I found myself pausing frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to admire the views. Hans, ever the supportive husband, was patient with my knitting-inspired breaks, always ready with a water bottle and an encouraging word.
As we ascended, the landscape transformed. The dense forest gave way to more open terrain, revealing the rocky coastline and the vast expanse of the Ligurian Sea. The changing colors of the rocks, from white to brown to yellow, were truly captivating. I made a mental note to capture these hues in my next knitting project. The trail to Punta Mesco from Monterosso is about 2.5 kilometers and includes a 300 meter elevation gain. It took us roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the top.
Finally, we reached the summit of Punta Mesco, where the views were simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, we could see all five villages of Cinque Terre spread out along the coast. Even with a bit of haze, the panorama was stunning. We spent a good while simply soaking it in, the silence broken only by the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found not in the famous landmarks, but in the quiet corners where history and nature intertwine.
Next on our itinerary was the Santuario Nostra Signora di Soviore, Liguria's oldest sanctuary. To get there, we retraced our steps from Punta Mesco and then followed a different trail that led us inland. The path was steep at times, but the promise of historical significance kept us motivated. We learned that the sanctuary dates back to the 12th century and has served as a place of refuge for centuries. It was said that during the Longobard incursions, people hid a sacred wooden statue of the Madonna, burying it to protect it from theft. A hundred years later, according to legend, it was rediscovered.
As we approached the sanctuary, the air grew still and the surroundings took on a serene quality. The sanctuary itself was simple yet elegant, with a sense of timelessness about it. Inside, we admired the religious artifacts and the peaceful atmosphere. Mette was particularly moved by the story of the sanctuary's origins, finding a sense of connection to the past.
The Santuario Nostra Signora di Soviore is not only a religious site but also a place of hospitality. It offers lodging and meals, providing a unique experience for those seeking spiritual retreat or simply a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life. From the sanctuary's square, shaded by ancient holm oaks, the view stretches from the Monterosso coast to Punta Mesco and beyond to the Portofino promontory. On a clear day, one can even see the Tuscan islands and the Maritime Alps.

Our final stop before lunch was the Hermitage of Sant'Antonio del Mesco, located near Punta Mesco. Although the hermitage is now in ruins, its location offered even more spectacular views of the coastline. We imagined the monks who once lived here, their lives dedicated to prayer and contemplation, surrounded by the beauty of nature. The hermitage was built in the 13th century and abandoned in the 18th century. It served as a lookout and signaling point since the Middle Ages.

By now, our stomachs were rumbling, so we made our way to Vernazza for lunch at Il Gambero Rosso. The restaurant is known for its seafood, and we were eager to try some local specialties. We shared a plate of spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and a mixed seafood grill. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true taste of the Ligurian coast. Il Gambero Rosso is located in the main square of Vernazza, offering a picturesque setting for a leisurely lunch.

After lunch, we strolled through the charming streets of Vernazza, admiring the colorful houses and the bustling harbor. Even in February, the village was alive with activity, although less crowded than during the peak season. We bought some local olive oil and pesto to take back to Berlin, a reminder of our Cinque Terre adventure.
In the late afternoon, we returned to Monterosso and sought out Enoteca Da Eliseo for a pre-dinner drink. This cozy wine bar, located in the historic center of Monterosso, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a glass of local wine. We opted for a Limoncello Spritz, a refreshing and zesty cocktail that perfectly captured the spirit of the Cinque Terre. Enoteca Da Eliseo also offers a selection of local wines and spirits to purchase, making it a great place to find souvenirs.

For dinner, we chose La Cantina Di Miky in Monterosso, a restaurant known for its slow food philosophy and its focus on local ingredients. We started with the anchovy appetizer which was fresh and delicious. Hans ordered the local specialty, trofie pasta with pesto, while I opted for the gnocchi with pesto. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. The atmosphere was informal and youthful, making for a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our explorations. We had hiked through history, admired breathtaking views, and savored the flavors of the Ligurian coast. It was a day that reminded us of the importance of venturing beyond the familiar, of seeking out the hidden gems that lie just off the beaten path.
Tomorrow, we're off to Porto Venere, Grotta di Lord Byron and Doria Castle. I'm looking forward to more coastal exploration, and Hans is already researching the best spots for sunset photography.
Back at our eco-friendly accommodation, I couldn't help but reflect on the day. It was a perfect blend of activity and relaxation, of history and nature. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful corner of Italy. And, of course, I'm already planning my next knitting project, inspired by the colors and textures of the Cinque Terre.
