First Impressions: Mae Hong Son Beckons

After a long journey from Berlin, changing planes in Chiang Mai and then a bus, Hans and I finally arrived in Mae Hong Son.
The air is fresh, carrying a hint of wood smoke, and the gentle bustle of the town is a welcome change from the city. I'm excited to explore this tranquil corner of Thailand with my husband, and I have a feeling this trip will be good for the soul. Today was all about settling in and soaking up the local atmosphere.

Our first day in Mae Hong Son was nothing short of magical. After our long journey, a scenic bus ride from Chiang Mai, where we flew into from Berlin, the town welcomed us with open arms. The crisp December air, a stark contrast to the chilly weather we left behind in Germany, was invigorating. The promise of adventure and cultural immersion hung heavy in the air, and I couldn't wait to dive in.

The beauty of Mae Hong Son lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Om Garden Cafe.
This charming spot, tucked away amidst lush greenery, was the perfect introduction to Mae Hong Son's laid-back vibe. I opted for the veggie scrambled eggs, while Hans enjoyed a traditional Thai breakfast. We both savored the strong, locally sourced coffee. It was a delightful start to our culinary journey. The cafe was so peaceful, a really nice place to have breakfast.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured towards our first cultural landmark: Wat Phra That Doi Kongmu. The temple sits majestically atop Kong Mu hill, offering panoramic views of Mae Hong Son. The climb was a bit of a workout, but the reward was well worth it. As we ascended, we were greeted by the sight of two gleaming white stupas, built in the Burmese style. The larger one, dating back to 1860, houses relics of the Buddha, making it a sacred site for pilgrims. The smaller stupa, erected in 1874 by the first governor of Mae Hong Son, commemorates his appointment.

The temple's history is fascinating. Founded in the early 19th century, it has served as a spiritual center for the Shan people for generations. The intricate carvings and golden accents adorning the structures are a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. As we wandered through the temple grounds, we observed locals offering prayers and lighting incense, their devotion palpable in the gentle breeze. The temple was envisioned as a beacon of faith and cultural pride for the Shan people.

From the summit, the view was simply breathtaking. Mae Hong Son lay sprawled beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops and emerald rice paddies. The surrounding mountains, shrouded in a soft haze, added to the ethereal beauty of the scene. I snapped several photos, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil paradise. This temple is the oldest landmark in Mae Hong Son province.

For lunch, we decided to try Na's Kitchen, a local favorite known for its authentic Thai dishes. I opted for the Pad Thai, while Hans chose the green curry. Both were bursting with flavor, a testament to the chef's skillful use of fresh, local ingredients. While we enjoyed our meal, we chatted about our plans for the rest of the trip, excited to explore more of Mae Hong Son's hidden gems. I made a mental note to try their fruit shakes next time. Sadly, it seems that Na's Kitchen has closed down permanently.

In the late afternoon, we strolled through the Mae Hong Son Walking Street. This vibrant night market, located along the edge of the lake, is a feast for the senses. Stalls overflowed with colorful handicrafts, local textiles, and aromatic street food. We sampled various delicacies, from grilled skewers to sweet pancakes, each bite a burst of exotic flavors. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with locals and tourists mingling and bargaining for souvenirs. It was the perfect way to immerse ourselves in the local culture.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Salween River Restaurant for dinner. This charming establishment, known for its Shan cuisine, was the perfect place to end our first day in Mae Hong Son. We shared several dishes, including the Shan noodle soup and the Burmese curry, each one a culinary masterpiece. The restaurant's warm and inviting ambiance, coupled with the friendly service, made for a truly memorable dining experience. It was fantastic, and the prices were amazing for what you get.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the lake, admiring the reflection of the temple lights on the still water. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars twinkled above us, creating a magical ambiance. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Pang Oung and Ban Rak Thai, two more of Mae Hong Son's must-see attractions. I can't wait to see what adventures await us! I'm also hoping we can find a nice little bar for a sunset drink. Hans is keen to visit Sunset Bar.

The weather in Mae Hong Son in December is comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 66°F to 84°F. With virtually no rain expected, it's the perfect time to explore the region's natural beauty. I'm especially looking forward to capturing the stunning landscapes with my camera. It will be good to get some shots for my blog.

As I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible opportunity to explore Mae Hong Son with my beloved Hans. I know that the next 10 days will be filled with unforgettable experiences, and I can't wait to share them all with you.

One thing I forgot to pack was bug spray. I will need to buy some tomorrow, as I am getting bitten already. I also forgot my travel guide on Mae Hong Son, so I will need to rely on the internet for information. Luckily, I have my phone and Hans has his laptop.

For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure in this enchanting corner of Thailand.
