Day 1: A Day of Discovery: Tromsø's Cultural Gems
Exploring Tromsø's iconic landmarks: Arctic & Tromsø Cathedrals, vibrant street art, and delightful local cuisine. An unforgettable Arctic adventure.
First Impressions: Tromsø's Embrace
The crisp Arctic air nipped at my cheeks as Liam and I stepped onto Tromsø soil. It's September, and the promise of the Northern Lights dances in the back of my mind, but today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of this Arctic city. Tromsø, known as the 'Gateway to the Arctic,' greeted us with a blend of modern vibrancy and historical charm, a combination I was eager to capture through my lens. After a smooth journey from Calgary, with a brief layover in Oslo, we checked into the Enter Viking Hotel, our basecamp for the next nine days. I was immediately charmed by its cozy atmosphere and central location, perfect for the adventures ahead.

Our first day in Tromsø was a whirlwind of cultural exploration, a carefully curated itinerary designed to introduce us to the city's most iconic landmarks. With my camera in hand and Liam by my side, I was ready to document every moment, every detail, every story that Tromsø had to offer. It's always a thrill to arrive in a new place, especially one as steeped in history and natural beauty as this. I felt that familiar surge of excitement, the anticipation of the unknown, and the eagerness to uncover hidden gems. It's a feeling that never gets old, and one that I hope to share with all of you through my words and photographs.
Our mornings always start the same - with a hearty breakfast. We went to Risø mat og kaffebar, a local gem recommended by several blogs I had researched before the trip. The coffee was strong, the pastries were fresh, and the atmosphere was buzzing with locals starting their day. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore.

Arctic Cathedral: A Symphony of Light and Ice
Our first stop was the iconic Arctic Cathedral, or Tromsdalen Church as it's officially known. Crossing the Tromsø Bridge, the cathedral's striking silhouette against the backdrop of the mountains was a sight to behold. Its design, reminiscent of icebergs or shards of ice, perfectly encapsulates the Arctic spirit.

As a photographer, I was immediately drawn to the cathedral's clean lines and geometric shapes. The exterior, composed of eleven aluminum-coated concrete panels on each side of the roof, gleamed in the soft morning light. I spent a good amount of time capturing different angles, playing with the light and shadows to convey the cathedral's unique form.
Stepping inside, I was struck by the simplicity and serenity of the space. The interior is dominated by a magnificent glass mosaic window, a masterpiece by Victor Sparre, installed in 1972. The mosaic depicts God's hand emitting rays of light through Jesus, a woman, and a man, symbolizing the divine connection to humanity. The play of colors as the sunlight streamed through the glass was mesmerizing, casting a warm glow on the oak pews and prism chandeliers.
The Arctic Cathedral is more than just a building; it's a symbol of Tromsø, a testament to human ingenuity, and a beacon of hope in the Arctic landscape.
I learned that the Arctic Cathedral was originally intended as a parish church but its architectural grandeur led to it being granted cathedral status. Despite its name, it's not actually a cathedral but a parish church. This stunning building was completed in 1965 and designed by Jan Inge Hovig. The interior is simple, drawing your eye to the stained glass mosaic on the far wall.
The organ, built in 2005, is another highlight, with its design echoing sails and ice floes. Every element inside the church is in harmony with the building's simplicity.
Tromsø Cathedral: A Wooden Marvel
From the modern Arctic Cathedral, we journeyed back in time to the Tromsø Cathedral, a yellow wooden structure nestled in the heart of the city. This cathedral, completed in 1861 in the Gothic Revival style, holds the distinction of being Norway's only Protestant cathedral made of wood.

As we approached, I was struck by the cathedral's charming simplicity. The tower and main entrance on the west front exude a sense of history and tradition. I discovered that the site has likely been a place of worship since the 13th century, with the first church built in 1252 by King Haakon IV.
Inside, the cathedral felt intimate and welcoming. The interior, renovated in the 1880s, features a copy of Adolph Tidemand's painting Resurrection and stained glass windows designed by Gustav Vigeland. The warm light filtering through the windows created a peaceful atmosphere, inviting contemplation and reflection. I took a moment to sit in one of the pews, imagining the countless stories and prayers that have filled this space over the centuries.
The Tromsø Cathedral can accommodate over 600 people. The church is built on a site that is believed to have been a church since the 13th century. The cathedral is the headquarters for the Tromsø domprosti (arch-deanery) and the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland.
It's worth noting that Tromsø actually has two cathedrals - the Lutheran Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral. The Catholic Cathedral is also made of wood and built in 1861 but is much smaller. Pope John Paul II even slept in the episcopal residence during his visit to Tromsø in 1989.
Street Art Tromsø: A Burst of Color in the Arctic
After immersing ourselves in the history and spirituality of Tromsø's cathedrals, it was time to explore the city's vibrant street art scene. Streetart Tromsø's streets are adorned with colorful murals and graffiti, transforming ordinary urban spaces into open-air galleries.

I learned that the street art scene in Tromsø is a testament to the city's commitment to fostering artistic expression and community involvement. The murals not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city but also provide a backdrop for memorable photographs. As a photographer, I was in my element, capturing the vibrant colors and intricate details of each artwork.
