Above and Below: Tromsø's Contrasts

Today was all about experiencing Tromsø from different perspectives—soaring above the city and then delving into its icy depths. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such varied and memorable experiences, each adding a unique layer to my understanding of this Arctic city. Liam and I, along with our friends, were ready for whatever the day held, cameras charged and spirits high.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mathallen Tromsø. It's a place dedicated to showcasing the finest ingredients from Northern Norway. I savored every bite, knowing we had a busy day ahead. Fuelled up, we set off to catch the Fjellheisen cable car.

Ascending Fjellheisen

The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the Fjellheisen. The cable car smoothly ascended, and the views became increasingly breathtaking. Tromsø unfolded beneath us, a charming tapestry of colorful buildings nestled against the backdrop of majestic mountains and fjords. It only took four minutes to reach the top, at Storsteinen, 421 meters above sea level.

At the summit, the panorama was simply stunning. The city, the surrounding islands, and the vast expanse of the Arctic landscape stretched out before us. I couldn't resist snapping photos, trying to capture the sheer grandeur of it all. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional gust of wind and the excited chatter of fellow travelers.

We spent a good hour exploring the summit, taking in the views from every angle. Liam, ever the adventurer, pointed out hiking trails leading to even higher peaks, including Tromsdalstinden. I made a mental note to consider that for another day, perhaps when we're feeling particularly ambitious. For now, I was content to soak in the beauty around me and capture as many photos as possible.

Sometimes, a change in perspective is all it takes to see the world anew.

Delving into Polar History

After our mountain-top experience, we descended and headed to The Polar Museum. Tromsø’s history is deeply intertwined with Arctic exploration, and I was eager to learn more. The museum is housed in a historic warehouse dating back to 1830, adding to the atmosphere.

Inside, we were transported back in time, learning about the daring expeditions, the lives of trappers, and the challenges of survival in the Arctic. The exhibits were fascinating, detailing the stories of famous explorers like Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen. I was particularly moved by the displays about the first woman to overwinter in the Arctic, Wanny Woldstad. Her courage and resilience were truly inspiring.

One exhibit focused on the traditional hunting methods, which was both interesting and sobering. It highlighted the importance of seal hunting for survival but also acknowledged the controversies surrounding it today. It’s a complex part of the region's history, and I appreciated the museum's balanced approach.

Liam was captivated by the displays on early polar expeditions, particularly those involving airships. He peppered me with questions about the technology and the risks involved, his engineer’s mind clearly fascinated by the mechanics of it all.

Lunch with a View at Skarven Kro

By lunchtime, we were ready for a break, so we headed to Skarven Kro. This pub is known for its traditional Norwegian fare and its lovely harbor views. We snagged a table by the window and ordered some hearty dishes to refuel. Liam opted for the Skarven Fish Soup, a creamy broth filled with fresh seafood. I decided on a reindeer stew, wanting to try something truly local. Both were delicious and satisfying, the perfect way to warm up after a morning in the Arctic air.

The atmosphere at Skarven Kro was cozy and welcoming, with friendly staff and a mix of locals and tourists. It was a great spot to relax and soak in the Tromsø vibe before our next adventure. Apparently Skarven Kro is known for its cod, fillet steaks and fish soup.

Chilling Out at Magic Ice Bar Tromsø

Our final stop for the day was Magic Ice Bar Tromsø. I had heard mixed reviews, but I was curious to experience it for myself. Stepping inside was like entering another world—everything was made of ice, from the bar to the sculptures. We were given warm ponchos and gloves, which were definitely needed in the -5 degree Celsius environment.

The ice sculptures were impressive, depicting scenes from Arctic history and Norse mythology. The bar staff served us welcome drinks in ice glasses, which was a fun novelty. The whole experience was a bit touristy, but it was also undeniably unique. Liam and our friends had a blast taking photos with the sculptures, embracing the quirky atmosphere.

I found myself reflecting on the contrasts of the day—the warmth of the sun on Fjellheisen, the cold of the ice bar, the historical depth of the Polar Museum, and the cozy atmosphere of Skarven Kro. Tromsø is a city of many layers, and I'm excited to continue exploring them in the days to come.

As we walked back to the Enter Viking Hotel, the sky began to darken, hinting at the possibility of Northern Lights. We're keeping our fingers crossed for a display tonight, but even if the lights don't appear, today has been a resounding success.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Northern Norwegian Art Museum, the Arctic–Alpine Botanic Garden, and VardenToppen [if the weather allows]. I also plan to visit the Sami Shop to check out some authentic handicrafts. I am particularly interested in learning more about the Sami culture and traditions.

For now, it's time to rest, recharge, and dream of more Arctic adventures.

I'm so glad I remembered to pack my ski gear! It will be perfect for some glacier exploring. I am also glad that I remembered my travel journal, as it's been so helpful to record all of the amazing things that I have been experiencing. I wish I hadn't forgotten my portable phone charger and extra memory cards, but I will be sure to pick some up tomorrow.
