Coastal Views and Artistic Wonders

Today was a day of exploration and immersion in the unique blend of art and nature that defines Naoshima Island. Liam and I set out to discover hidden gems and iconic landmarks, and the day unfolded into a beautiful tapestry of experiences that I'm eager to share.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at the Terrace Restaurant. The restaurant's large windows offered an unobstructed view of the Seto Inland Sea, making it a perfect start to the day. The menu featured fresh, local ingredients, and Liam and I enjoyed a delicious meal while taking in the tranquil seascape. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can become a memorable experience when enjoyed in such a serene setting.

Fueled and ready, we headed to Tsunosaki, a scenic gem on the island's coast. The views were simply breathtaking, with the coastline stretching out before us in all its glory. The artistic spirit of Naoshima is palpable here, with sculptures dotting the landscape, inviting contemplation and reflection. I spent a good amount of time capturing the harmony of art and nature through my lens, while Liam enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the shore. The summer sun was warm, but a gentle breeze kept us comfortable as we explored this beautiful spot.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on our itinerary was Yokobou Park, a serene park known for its natural beauty. As we wandered through the park, we were surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil waters, creating a peaceful atmosphere. It felt like stepping into a traditional Japanese scroll painting, with the picturesque views of the mountains and sea. We took a moment to sit by the water, soaking in the serenity and enjoying the quietude of nature. It was a welcome respite from the bustling tourist spots, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me.

After our refreshing break in nature, we made our way to the Ando Museum. This museum is dedicated to the work and philosophy of Tadao Ando, one of Japan's most iconic architects. The building itself is a masterpiece, blending traditional Japanese architecture with Ando's signature concrete-and-light aesthetic. Inside, we explored exhibits showcasing Ando's architectural designs and his connection to Naoshima. The interplay of light and shadow within the museum created a captivating experience, and I found myself lost in the beauty and simplicity of Ando's work.

For lunch, we decided to try APRON CAFE, a charming café known for its delicious and healthy meals. Tucked away in a narrow alleyway, the café had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The menu featured dishes made with fresh, local ingredients, and we opted for the seasonal special lunch set. Every bite was a burst of flavor, and I appreciated the café's focus on nutrition and seasonal ingredients. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly complemented our day of exploration.

Before dinner, we made a quick stop at the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop to pick up a few essentials. It's the only convenience store on the island, and it was surprisingly well-stocked with everything we needed. We grabbed some snacks and drinks for the evening, and I couldn't resist buying a few local treats to take back home. It's funny how even a simple convenience store can feel like an oasis when you're in a new place.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Ebisukamo for dinner, a small izakaya known for its incredible food and friendly atmosphere. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and we felt like we were dining in a close friend's living room. We ordered a variety of dishes, including fresh seafood and local delicacies, and every bite was a delight. The cozy ambiance and personal touch from the owner made it a memorable dining experience, and we lingered over our meal, savoring the flavors and the company.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Naoshima's art scene, including a visit to Drink a Cup of Tea, Kasaneiwa, and the Benesse House Area East Gate. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Kon'nichiwa, a local bar, in the evening. Each day on this island brings new discoveries and unforgettable moments, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.

Naoshima continues to captivate me with its unique blend of art, nature, and serenity. It's a place where creativity thrives and beauty abounds, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience it all. As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the power of art to transform spaces and the importance of taking time to appreciate the simple joys of life.
