Saying Goodbye to Yakushima's Magic

As my final day on Yakushima draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. This island, with its ancient forests, dramatic landscapes, and serene atmosphere, has truly captured my heart. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to connect with nature on a profound level. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of this tranquility and reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had here.

The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Michikusa. I'd heard great things about this local spot, and it didn't disappoint. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was the perfect way to start the day, with a variety of small dishes offering a taste of Yakushima's local flavors. I savored every bite, knowing it would be one of my last meals on the island. It was a cozy spot, and I could tell it was popular with locals, which is always a good sign. I was especially grateful for the kind owner who made me feel so welcome.

After breakfast, I set out to visit the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with narrow roads winding through lush greenery. When I finally arrived, the sight of the white lighthouse against the backdrop of the deep blue ocean was simply breathtaking. The invigorating sea breeze and the sound of waves crashing against the shore created a sense of peace and tranquility. I spent some time exploring the area, taking photos, and simply enjoying the stunning coastal views. I even found a small, hidden shrine near the lighthouse, adding a touch of mystery to the experience.

The true beauty of Yakushima lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and connection with the natural world.

Next on my list was a visit to Yakushima National Park. Although I'd already spent several days hiking in the park's ancient forests, I wanted to experience a different part of it before leaving. I chose a shorter trail that offered panoramic views of the island and the surrounding ocean. As I walked, I was struck by the incredible biodiversity of the park, with its mix of subtropical and temperate vegetation. The air was fresh and clean, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. It was the perfect way to immerse myself in nature one last time.

For lunch, I decided to try the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. I'd read rave reviews about their flying fish ramen, and I was eager to taste this local specialty. The restaurant was charming and cozy, with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. The flying fish ramen was indeed a standout dish, with a rich and flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. It was a delicious and satisfying meal that perfectly captured the essence of Yakushima's cuisine.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Wood Shop Kikori, eager to find a unique souvenir to remind me of my time on the island. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted wooden items, from small trinkets to larger pieces of furniture. I was impressed by the quality of the craftsmanship and the attention to detail. The owner, an ex-Yakushima forester, was passionate about his work and happy to share his knowledge of the local wood. I ended up buying a small, intricately carved wooden bird, which I knew would be a cherished reminder of my Yakushima adventure.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Il Mare for a final dinner on the island. This Italian restaurant, known for its seafood dishes and homemade pasta, was the perfect place to celebrate my Yakushima experience. I ordered the Asahi crab linguine, a local specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the crab was fresh and flavorful. The restaurant itself was charming and cozy, with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. It was the perfect way to end my day and my time on Yakushima.

Reflecting on my 11 days in Yakushima, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this magical island. From hiking through ancient forests to exploring pristine coastlines, every moment has been a feast for the senses. I've captured countless photographs, filled pages of my travel journal, and created memories that will last a lifetime. As I prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that a part of me will always remain in Yakushima, among its ancient trees and serene landscapes.

I didn’t get to see Liam on this trip, but I know he would have loved it here. We definitely have to come back here together. I think he would especially enjoy Yakushima National Park. He's always up for a good hike, and I know he would be just as captivated by the ancient forests as I am. Maybe next time we can plan a longer trip and explore some of the more challenging trails together.

This trip has also reminded me how much I enjoy traveling solo. It's given me the space and time to connect with myself and with nature in a way that I don't always get when I'm traveling with others. As much as I love sharing my adventures with Liam, there's something special about being alone in a new place, free to explore and discover at my own pace.

As I pack my bags and prepare to leave Yakushima, I'm already dreaming of my next adventure. I'm not sure where I'll go next, but I know that it will be somewhere that challenges me, inspires me, and allows me to connect with the world in a meaningful way. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of my time on this enchanted island, and I'll always be grateful for the lessons it has taught me.

Yakushima, thank you for the memories. Until we meet again.

Tomorrow marks the end of my trip as I start my journey back to Canmore. It’s going to be a long trip, but I am excited to see Liam and tell him all about my adventures here in Yakushima.
