Discover the rich culture at Loiyangalani Desert Museum & unwind at Longech Lido Beach. A perfect start to our Lake Turkana adventure!
A Journey Begins
Our adventure to Lake Turkana has officially begun, and what a start it has been! Today was all about immersing ourselves in the local culture and soaking up the unique landscapes that this region has to offer. From exploring a museum dedicated to the area's diverse tribes to relaxing on the shores of a desert lake, it's been a day of contrasts and unforgettable experiences. I already feel like I'm a world away from our cozy home in Canmore, and I can't wait to see what else this incredible journey has in store for us.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at the Trout Tree Restaurant. I must admit, I was a bit surprised to find such a place in this semi-arid environment. The name itself conjured up images of a whimsical, almost fairytale-like setting, and it didn't disappoint. It was more than just a restaurant; it was an experience. Built around a massive fig tree, the multi-story structure blended seamlessly with the surrounding forest. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating a dappled effect on the wooden tables, and the air was filled with the sounds of birds and the gentle murmur of the Burguret River nearby. Liam, ever the curious one, was fascinated by the trout ponds, where the restaurant sources its fresh fish.
After breakfast, we set off to explore the Loiyangalani Desert Museum. Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Turkana, the museum offered not only a breathtaking view but also a fascinating insight into the lives and traditions of the eight communities that call this region home: the Turkana, El-Molo, Rendille, Samburu, Gabra, Watta, Borana, and Dassanach. The museum was established to preserve and promote the heritage of the peoples around Lake Turkana.

As we wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the resourcefulness and resilience of these communities, who have adapted to survive in this harsh environment. Traditional tools, crafts, and regalia were on display, each telling a story of desert and lake-based cultures. Liam was particularly interested in the weaponry and hunting tools, while I was drawn to the intricate beadwork and the vibrant colors of the traditional clothing.
The Loiyangalani Desert Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts; it's a celebration of cultural diversity and ecological awareness. It was opened in June 2008 and serves as a cultural anchor for the eight indigenous communities that inhabit this arid and remote region. The exhibits provided a glimpse into their unique ways of life, their deep connection to the land, and their efforts to preserve their traditions in the face of modernization. The museum also hosts exhibits from the Lake Turkana Festival.
Sometimes, the most unexpected places hold the richest stories.
After immersing ourselves in the cultural heritage of Lake Turkana, it was time to experience its natural beauty. We drove to Longech Lido Beach, a serene coastal escape located in Kalokol. The contrast between the arid desert landscape and the turquoise waters of the lake was simply stunning. Longech Lido Beach is known for its immaculate sandy beaches and tranquil waters.

The December sun was warm, but a gentle breeze kept things comfortable. We strolled along the beach, enjoying the feel of the soft sand beneath our feet. I couldn't resist dipping my toes in the water, which was surprisingly refreshing. The beach is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxation and exploration.
Local vendors had set up stalls along the beach, offering handcrafted items and delicious local cuisine. We sampled some fresh seafood dishes, savoring the flavors of the region. The area is also a great spot for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors.
As the day drew to a close, we made a stop at Torit General Store Wholesale & Retail Commodines. It was a great opportunity to interact with the locals and get a glimpse into their daily lives. Torit General Store is where everyday commodities meet vibrant culture and community. We picked up a few souvenirs and some snacks for the road, before heading back to our accommodation for the night.

Back at the Trout Tree Restaurant for dinner, we reflected on the day's adventures. The fresh trout, cooked to perfection, was the perfect way to end our first day in Lake Turkana. As we sat there, surrounded by the sounds of the African night, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore such a unique and fascinating part of the world.
December in Kubi Turkana offers pleasant weather, with average temperatures ranging from 12.8°C (55°F) to 21.6°C (70.9°F). While there can be rainfall, the sunshine hours make it ideal for exploration.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Central Island National Park and explore Envaitenet. I've heard that Central Island is home to a variety of bird species, so I'm excited to put my binoculars to good use. Liam is eager to see Envaitenet, also known as the 'Island of No Return', a mysterious and intriguing place with a fascinating history. We'll be having all our meals at the Trout Tree Restaurant again tomorrow. And perhaps, if time allows, we'll visit The Planet Pub For Beer/Wine & Spirits for a relaxing evening.
I'm also mindful of the essentials I packed, although I did forget my binoculars for bird watching and a portable solar charger. These will definitely be on my list for future trips. It's important to be prepared, especially in a remote location like Lake Turkana. For anyone planning a trip to Lake Turkana, remember to pack light and breathable clothing, sun protection, and a reusable water bottle. And don't forget your camera – you'll want to capture every moment of this incredible adventure!
Until tomorrow, friends. Let's see what wonders await us in the heart of Turkana!
