Solo Adventure in Þórsmörk: Exploring Iceland's Wilderness
Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls and Elves in Þórsmörk's Hidden Gems
Discover Þórsmörk's magic: Hike to secret waterfalls in Nauthúsagil, connect with local artisans, and savor Icelandic flavors. A day of wonder!
A Day of Icelandic Enchantment
Today was a day where Þórsmörk truly revealed its magic. It was a blend of exhilarating hikes, delightful discoveries, and a deeper connection with Iceland's rich culture and stunning landscapes. I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to explore the hidden corners of this natural paradise, and what I found exceeded all expectations. From navigating a narrow canyon to savoring local delicacies, every moment was a testament to the unique charm of Iceland.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Volcano Huts Húsadalur. The buffet was a delightful spread of homemade bread, eggs, ham, cheese, fresh fruit, and all the essentials to fuel a day of hiking. I made sure to pack a few extra biscuits for the trail, remembering my near miss with low blood sugar the other day. After breakfast, I felt ready to embrace whatever Þórsmörk had in store for me. I overheard other guests excitedly discussing their plans for the day, some embarking on the Laugavegur Trail and others opting for shorter hikes around the valley. It's inspiring to be surrounded by so many fellow nature enthusiasts!
First on the agenda was a visit to Thórsmörk Skagfjörðsskáli. The Iceland Touring Association owns and operates the hut. This hut is nestled at the mouth of Langidalur Valley, right in the heart of Þórsmörk. As I approached the hut, I was struck by its welcoming atmosphere. Skagfjörðsskáli is a popular spot for hikers exploring the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails. The hut can accommodate 75 people and offers two kitchens, dining halls, and bunk beds. It’s a perfect basecamp for adventurers looking to recharge. The hut wardens were incredibly helpful, offering tips and insights about the surrounding trails. I learned about the Tindfjallahringur trail, a magnificent hiking route with unique views of Goðaland, the glaciers, and the inner part of Þórsmörk. Though I didn't have time for the full loop today, I made a mental note to return and explore it more thoroughly. The spirit and culture that the association is built on have flourished over the years.

Next, I set off to explore Nauthúsagil, a narrow gorge with a hidden waterfall. The drive to the trailhead was scenic, with the landscape transforming into a rugged, rocky terrain. As I parked the car, I could hear the faint sound of rushing water, which only heightened my anticipation. The hike to Nauthúsagil is short but adventurous. The trail leads upstream through the narrow canyon, requiring a bit of careful navigation over slippery rocks and small creeks. There's even a section where you need to pull yourself up with the aid of a fixed chain. I was grateful for my hiking boots, which provided the necessary grip and support.

The canyon itself is like a hidden world, with moss-covered walls and the sound of water echoing all around. It felt like stepping into a scene from a fantasy novel. The highlight of the hike is, of course, the waterfall hidden at the end of the gorge. It's not a massive cascade, but its secluded location and the surrounding natural beauty make it incredibly special. I spent some time taking photos and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature. I can see why some people refer to it as a hidden gem.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After my adventurous hike, I decided to indulge in some local culture and made my way to UNA Local Product Sveitabúðin Una in Hvolsvöllur. This charming store is located in an old Nissen hut and offers a delightful selection of hand-picked local products and souvenirs. The store is named after Una Álfkona, an elf woman from local legend. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a cozy atmosphere and shelves filled with unique handicrafts, art, and design products. I was particularly drawn to the hand-knitted sweaters, each one a testament to Icelandic craftsmanship. I also sampled some local delicacies, including jams, teas, and spices made from Icelandic ingredients. It was a wonderful opportunity to support local artisans and take home a piece of Icelandic culture. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted scarf for Liam and a jar of rhubarb jam for myself. I know he will love the scarf, and I can’t wait to spread the jam on some freshly baked bread back home in Canmore. It will remind me of this amazing trip.

For lunch, I stopped by Skogafoss Bistro Bar, located near the iconic Skógafoss waterfall. The bistro has a modern interior and a relaxed ambiance. I ordered the lamb soup, a traditional Icelandic dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender, and the broth was rich and flavorful. The bistro also offers a fantastic view of the waterfall, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. I overheard other diners praising the lamb leg, which apparently is a must-try. Maybe next time!

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Hygge Restaurant & Bar for dinner. This restaurant offers a fusion of Icelandic and international cuisine, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I decided to try the seafood platter, which was a delightful assortment of fresh catches. Each dish was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The restaurant also boasts spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. I learned that the manager, Jorge, came from Colombia and brought a passion for cooking.
