Ascending Adventures, Savoring Flavors
Today was a day of contrasts, from challenging hikes amidst stunning landscapes to the cozy warmth of greenhouses filled with tomato plants. It’s amazing how much beauty and flavor can be packed into a single day here in Iceland. I'm constantly reminded why I chose to become a photographer, every corner holds a new perspective.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Volcano Huts Húsadalur. The breakfast buffet was just what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures. Homemade bread, eggs, and fresh fruit – simple, but satisfying. After packing my camera gear and making sure I had enough water, I set off to tackle Þórólfsfell.
Explore Þórólfsfell, a stunning mountain peak in Iceland, offering breathtaking views and a serene escape into nature's beauty.
The hike up Þórólfsfell was invigorating. The weather was a mix of rain and snow, which made the landscape even more dramatic. The trail was moderately challenging, with some steep sections, but the views from the top were worth every step. From the summit, I could see the Fljótshlíð valley and the majestic glaciers of Tindfjallajökull, Eyjafjallajökull, and Mýrdalsjökull. It was a breathtaking panorama that reminded me of why I love landscape photography. I spent a good hour at the top, snapping photos and simply soaking in the view.
The best views come after the hardest climbs.
After descending Þórólfsfell, I decided to explore Höfðabrekkuheiði.
Explore the breathtaking landscapes of Höfðabrekkuheiði, an Icelandic hiking gem offering diverse trails and stunning vistas.
The drive there was an adventure in itself, with black sand and glacial rivers surrounding the gravel road. Höfðabrekkuheiði offered a different kind of beauty, with rolling hills and volcanic rock formations stretching as far as the eye could see. I took a leisurely walk, enjoying the tranquility and the unique flora of the area. The wind was strong, but the views were expansive and captivating.
By lunchtime, I was ready for a warm meal, so I headed to Gullfoss - Panorama Restaurant - Cafe - Shop.
Discover exquisite dining at Gullfoss Panorama Restaurant with breathtaking views and authentic Icelandic flavors near one of nature's wonders.
The weather was still rainy, but the restaurant offered a cozy refuge with stunning views of the Gullfoss waterfall. I enjoyed a simple but satisfying lunch, taking in the breathtaking scenery. It’s amazing how a good meal can lift your spirits, especially when enjoyed with such a spectacular backdrop.
In the late afternoon, I made my way to Friðheimar for dinner, a tomato farm and restaurant I had been eagerly anticipating.
Experience farm-to-table dining in Iceland at Friðheimar's enchanting greenhouse restaurant featuring fresh tomato dishes.
The experience was truly unique. Dining in a greenhouse surrounded by tomato plants was surreal and delightful. I started with their famous tomato soup, served buffet-style with homemade bread, sour cream, and cucumber salsa. The soup was rich and flavorful, and the bread was simply divine. For my main course, I opted for the ravioli with fresh tomato pasta sauce and pesto, which was equally delicious.
The tomato theme extended to the drinks as well. I tried the Friðheimar Tomato Beer, which was surprisingly refreshing. I learned that Friðheimar grows about 40% of Iceland's tomatoes, using geothermal water to heat their greenhouses year-round. It’s an impressive example of sustainable farming and a testament to Iceland's innovative spirit.
Before leaving, I visited the little tomato shop and picked up some edible souvenirs, including tomato jam and tomato chutney. It was the perfect way to remember this unique dining experience.
To cap off the day, I decided to check out Sæsa Bar, located near the Volcano Huts.
Discover the charm of Sæsabar, a cozy bar in Flúðir offering unique drinks and a friendly atmosphere perfect for tourists.
It was a cozy spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was relaxed, and I enjoyed chatting with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences.
As I head back to my campsite, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow. The itinerary includes visits to Ægissíðufoss Waterfall and Skógafoss. I’m also planning to stop by Rammagerðin, a shop I’ve heard has some wonderful local crafts. It promises to be another day filled with natural beauty and cultural experiences. Goodnight from Þórsmörk!
