A Final Icelandic Embrace

As my 9-day solo journey through Þórsmörk draws to a close, I find myself overwhelmed with a mix of emotions. This trip was more than just a destination; it was an immersion into the raw beauty and tranquility of Iceland's highlands, a place where the elements sing a song of ancient power and serene stillness. Each day has been a new chapter in a story I'll treasure forever, filled with breathtaking landscapes and moments of profound connection with nature.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at the Volcano Huts Húsadalur. The warmth of the dining area and the friendly chatter of fellow hikers created a cozy atmosphere that I savored, knowing it would soon be replaced by the quiet solitude of my journey back to Reykjavik. The weather in Þórsmörk today was a mix of rain and snow, typical for May, adding a mystical touch to the already dramatic scenery.

Before leaving Þórsmörk, I took one last walk around the area, wanting to etch every detail into my memory. The towering mountains, the vibrant green valleys, and the ever-present glaciers created a landscape that felt both surreal and deeply grounding. It was a moment of pure gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and powerful place. I thought about Liam, and how much he would have loved hiking these trails with me. I made a mental note to bring him here someday, to share the magic of Þórsmörk with the person I love most.

The beauty of Þórsmörk isn't just in its landscapes, but in the way it makes you feel – small yet connected, humbled yet invigorated.

The bus journey from Þórsmörk to Reykjavik was an adventure in itself. Navigating the rugged terrain and crossing the glacial rivers required a specialized vehicle, adding an element of excitement to the trip. As the bus bumped along, I gazed out the window, watching the landscape transform from highland wilderness to rolling green fields. It was a visual reminder of the diverse beauty that Iceland has to offer. I chuckled, remembering my initial panic about forgetting my portable phone charger and extra memory cards. Turns out, disconnecting was exactly what I needed.

My first stop was the Skógar Museum, located near the famous Skógafoss waterfall. This museum is a treasure trove of Icelandic history and culture, showcasing artifacts from the Viking Age to the 20th century. The museum is divided into three parts: the Folk Museum, the Open-Air Museum, and the Technical Museum. The Folk Museum offered a glimpse into the daily lives of Icelanders throughout history, with exhibits on fishing, agriculture, and traditional crafts. I was particularly fascinated by the collection of textiles and garments, a testament to the resourcefulness and artistry of the Icelandic people.

The Open-Air Museum was equally captivating, featuring restored turf houses that provided a tangible sense of how Icelanders lived in centuries past. Walking through these homes, I could almost feel the presence of the families who once inhabited them, their lives shaped by the harsh but beautiful landscape. The Technical Museum was a fascinating look at the evolution of transportation and technology in Iceland, with exhibits on everything from early postal services to modern automobiles. It was amazing to see how far the country had come in such a relatively short period of time. I spent hours wandering through the exhibits, soaking in the rich history and culture of this remarkable island.

For lunch, I stopped at Restaurant Minilik in Flúðir, a unique Ethiopian restaurant that offers a surprising culinary experience in the heart of Iceland. I had heard about this place and was intrigued by the idea of Ethiopian food in Iceland. The restaurant is known for its authentic dishes, such as injera with various stews made from lentils, vegetables, and meats. The communal dining style was a welcome change after days of solo meals, and I enjoyed sharing stories with fellow travelers while savoring the flavorful food. It was a delightful reminder of the interconnectedness of cultures and the joy of discovering new culinary experiences. I opted for a vegetarian platter, enjoying the mix of lentils, chickpeas, and split peas served on the traditional injera bread. The spices were fragrant and flavorful, offering a comforting warmth on a chilly day.

After lunch, I couldn't resist stopping at Icewear/Vík Wool in Vík. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for my family and friends, and perhaps a cozy Icelandic sweater for myself. The store had a wide selection of wool products, from traditional Lopapeysa sweaters to hats, gloves, and blankets. I spent some time browsing the different styles and colors, appreciating the craftsmanship and quality of the Icelandic wool. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted hat for my mom and a warm scarf for Liam. As I was browsing, I overheard a conversation about the authenticity of Icelandic wool in some Icewear products, which made me pause. I decided to check the tags carefully to ensure that the items I was purchasing were indeed made with Icelandic wool. I also made a mental note to explore other local brands and artisan shops in the future, to support smaller businesses and ensure the authenticity of the products.

My final stop of the day was at Ingólfsskali Viking Restaurant for dinner, a unique dining experience that immerses you in the world of the Vikings. The restaurant is designed to resemble a Viking longhouse, with turf walls, wooden beams, and roaring fireplaces. The atmosphere was incredibly immersive, transporting me back in time to the age of the Norsemen. The owner, Gunnar, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, sharing stories about Viking history and culture. The food was equally impressive, with a menu featuring traditional Icelandic dishes made with local ingredients. I started with the carrot soup, followed by the braised lamb, both of which were cooked to perfection. For dessert, I couldn't resist trying the skyr mousse, a traditional Icelandic dairy product that was both creamy and refreshing. The entire meal was a feast for the senses, a celebration of Icelandic heritage and culinary traditions.

As I savored my meal, I reflected on my incredible journey through Þórsmörk. This solo adventure had been a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with nature on a deeper level and discover a newfound sense of self-reliance. I had faced challenges, embraced the unexpected, and reveled in the beauty of the Icelandic wilderness. I am already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may take me. I'm especially grateful for Liam's unwavering support, even from afar. Knowing he's cheering me on makes these solo trips even more meaningful.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Calgary, filled with memories and stories to share. Iceland, and Þórsmörk, in particular, has left an indelible mark on my soul. Until next time, takk fyrir (thank you)!
