Day 7: Chasing Lighthouses and Stone Bridges: A Day of Discovery on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Explore the scenic wonders of Snæfellsnes: from the iconic Súgandisey Lighthouse to the majestic Stone Bridge, a day of pure Icelandic bliss.
A Day of Coastal Wonders
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. With my friends in tow, I set out to explore some of the region's most iconic landmarks, from charming lighthouses to dramatic natural rock formations. It was a day filled with fresh air, stunning vistas, and a deeper appreciation for the unique landscapes that Iceland has to offer. And of course, plenty of laughter and shared moments with the best travel companions a guy could ask for.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Lýsuhóll. Fuelled up, we made our way towards Stykkishólmur, eager to visit the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse. The drive itself was a treat, with rolling green hills and glimpses of the coastline keeping us captivated. I'm so glad I remembered to pack my camera; every turn seemed to present a new photo opportunity.
Arriving in Stykkishólmur, we parked near the harbor and took the short walk along the causeway to Súgandisey Island. The bright red lighthouse perched on the basalt island was a sight to behold. We climbed to the top, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of Breiðafjörður. The fresh sea air whipped through our hair as we gazed out at the countless islands dotting the bay. It was easy to see why this spot is a favorite among photographers. Ethan would have loved climbing up here, he's always been fascinated with lighthouses.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of places.
After soaking in the views from the lighthouse, it was time for a bit of shopping. We stopped at Bónus, a local supermarket, to stock up on snacks and drinks for the rest of our journey. It's always fun to see what kinds of local treats you can find in different countries, and Bónus didn't disappoint. I grabbed some Icelandic chocolate, which I planned to savor later in the evening.
For lunch, we headed to Agnið streetfood. This vibrant food truck is known for its delicious Icelandic street food, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I opted for the fish tacos, which were made with fish cheeks – a local delicacy I'd never tried before. They were absolutely amazing! Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. My friends were equally impressed with their burgers and sandwiches. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure.
With our bellies full, we set off towards Arnarstapi to visit the Stone Bridge. This natural rock arch is one of the most iconic landmarks on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and I was eager to see it for myself. The drive to Arnarstapi was incredibly scenic, with rugged lava fields and dramatic cliffs stretching out before us.
We parked in Arnarstapi and followed the coastal walking trail towards the Stone Bridge. The path wound along the cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The waves crashed against the rocks below, creating a symphony of sound that was both calming and invigorating. As we rounded a bend, the Stone Bridge came into view. It was even more impressive in person than I had imagined. The natural archway spanned a picturesque inlet, framing the ocean in a truly spectacular way.

We spent some time exploring the area around the Stone Bridge, taking photos and simply enjoying the scenery. The rugged coastline, the crashing waves, and the dramatic rock formations all combined to create a truly unforgettable landscape. I could easily see why this spot is so popular among photographers and nature lovers. I'll have to show Olivia the pictures when I get back, I know she'd love it here.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Grundarfjörður for dinner at Bjargarsteinn Mathús. This charming restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and traditional Icelandic dishes. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with large windows offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and ocean. I ordered the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. My friends opted for the seafood, which they raved about. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Snæfellsnes adventure, and we plan to make the most of it. We'll be visiting the Seagulls viewpoint, hoping to spot some of the local birdlife, and the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum, where we'll learn about the traditional Icelandic practice of shark fishing. We'll also be stopping by Skipper Restaurant for a drink before heading back to Reykjavik. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm already looking forward to planning my next adventure.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a moment to reflect on the day's adventures. From the charming Súgandisey Lighthouse to the majestic Stone Bridge, we had experienced some of the best that the Snæfellsnes Peninsula has to offer. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful and unique part of the world with some of my closest friends.
