Hidden Gems and Mineral Springs

Another day, another adventure on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula! Today was all about exploring the raw, untouched beauty of this region, from the depths of a hidden gorge to the refreshing taste of a natural mineral spring. It’s amazing how much Iceland continues to surprise me with its diverse landscapes and unique experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Lýsuhóll. Fuelled up, we set off to discover the legendary Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge.

The drive itself was stunning, with the landscape unfolding before us in all its glory. As we approached the gorge, the dramatic cliffs rose sharply, hinting at the hidden wonders within. I'd read about Rauðfeldsgjá, or Red-Cloak Rift, but nothing prepared me for the reality. The entrance is a narrow crevasse in the mountainside, barely wide enough for a couple of people to enter side by side. The name 'Rauðfeldsgjá' translates to 'Red Cloak Rift' and is inspired by the Saga of Bárður Snæfellsás from the 9th century.

As I stepped inside, I was immediately enveloped in a cool, damp atmosphere. The sound of rushing water echoed around us, guiding us deeper into the gorge. The light filtering through the narrow opening created an ethereal glow, illuminating the moss-covered walls. It felt like stepping into another world, a secret passage carved by nature itself.

We navigated through the shallow stream, the water surprisingly cold against my hiking boots. The gorge narrowed further, and we had to climb over rocks and wade through deeper pools. It was a bit challenging, but the sense of adventure kept us going. Finally, we reached the heart of the canyon, a small chamber where a waterfall cascaded down the rocks.

The power of the water was mesmerizing, and I couldn't resist getting closer, even though it meant getting splashed. The experience was exhilarating, a true immersion in Iceland's untamed beauty. I can see why this place is linked to Icelandic sagas; it has an otherworldly quality that sparks the imagination.

Exploring Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge is like stepping into a living saga, where nature's raw power and ancient legends intertwine.

After drying off and catching our breath, we continued our journey to Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring.

This natural spring is known for its mineral-rich waters, believed to have therapeutic properties. It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the detour. To get there from Grundarfjörður, we drove south on Route 54 and then turned left onto Snæfellsnesvegur.

When we arrived, we found a small, unassuming spring surrounded by lush greenery. There was a donation box with a sign suggesting a small payment for using the spring. We happily obliged and then eagerly filled our water bottles. The water had a distinct taste, slightly carbonated and with a hint of minerals. Some of my friends weren't too keen on the taste, but I found it strangely refreshing.

I felt a sense of connection to the land, drinking water that had been naturally filtered through the volcanic rocks. Whether it truly has healing properties or not, it was a unique and memorable experience. As Olivia always says, it's about the experience as much as anything else. I could imagine the Vikings stopping here to replenish their supplies, feeling the same sense of gratitude for this natural bounty.

For lunch, we stopped at Agnið streetfood in Stykkishólmur.

This food truck is known for its fresh seafood and Icelandic fast food. I opted for the fish tacos, which were made with fish cheeks. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, perfect for a quick break before our next adventure. The others tried a variety of dishes, from traditional Icelandic fare to more contemporary options, and everyone was happy with their choices.

In the late afternoon, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved dinner at Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður.

The menu is seasonal, with a focus on local products. I decided to try the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. As we savored our meal, we gazed out at the breathtaking landscape. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains and the ocean. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a moment of pure bliss that I will cherish forever.

After dinner, we headed to Narfeyrarstofa for a nightcap.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to hike the Eldborg Crater Trailhead and visit Vatnasafn [instructions: check the web for details about the crater and the museum]. It’s experiences like these that remind me why I love to travel, to discover new places, meet new people, and create lasting memories. It makes me appreciate the simple things in life, like a good meal, a refreshing drink, and the company of good friends.
