Day 5: Volcanic Hikes and Watery Reflections: A Day of Exploration on Snæfellsnes
Discover Iceland's hidden gems: Hike Eldborg Crater, explore Vatnasafn, and savor local flavors in Snæfellsnes. A day of adventure with friends!
A Day of Fire and Ice
Today was a day of contrasts here on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We started with a fiery hike up a volcanic crater and ended with a contemplative visit to a library filled with glacial water. It’s amazing how much this small corner of Iceland packs into a single day.
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a hearty Icelandic breakfast lured us into Hlaðan Veitingahús this morning. Olivia had been raving about their traditional lamb stew, so I knew I had to give it a try. It was the perfect fuel for our morning adventure. Ethan, predictably, opted for pancakes, a familiar comfort even in this extraordinary landscape. We were all set and ready to go!
Our first stop was the Eldborg Crater Trailhead. The drive there was stunning, with the landscape transforming into vast lava fields dotted with moss and heather. As we approached the trailhead, the imposing silhouette of Eldborg Crater came into view. It’s hard to believe that this perfectly shaped crater was once a fortress of fire, active thousands of years ago.

The hike itself was invigorating. The trail is about 6 kilometers round trip, and though it's considered relatively easy, the terrain is rocky and uneven. I was grateful for my sturdy hiking boots, especially when navigating some of the steeper sections. I even had to use the chains that were installed to help hikers get up the hillside. The views along the way were incredible, with the vast Barnaborg lava field stretching out before us.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are the ones that challenge us physically and offer breathtaking views as a reward.
Reaching the top of Eldborg was a moment of triumph. The crater is massive, about 200 meters long and 180 meters wide, and 50 meters deep. Standing on the rim, gazing into the depths of the crater, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the forces that had shaped this landscape. The panoramic views from the top were simply breathtaking. You could even see the fjords from the Snæfellsjökull Glacier. I took a moment to catch my breath and soak it all in, snapping a few photos to capture the memory. Ethan was fascinated by the ravens nesting inside the crater, while Olivia was busy identifying the various types of vegetation that had taken root in the lava.
After our volcanic hike, we were ready for a change of pace. We drove to Arnarstapi for lunch at Stapinn. This charming restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious fast food. I decided to try their fish and chips, which came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The fish was perfectly fried, with just the right amount of seasoning, and the fries were crispy and delicious. Olivia enjoyed a hearty bowl of lamb soup, while Ethan devoured a burger.

With our bellies full, we continued our journey to Stykkishólmur, a picturesque town on the northern side of the peninsula. Our destination was Vatnasafn, also known as the Library of Water. This unique museum, conceived by American artist Roni Horn, is housed in a former library overlooking the town and the Breiðafjörður bay.

The centerpiece of the Library of Water is a collection of water samples taken from 24 of Iceland's major glaciers. The water is stored in glass columns that stretch from floor to ceiling, creating a mesmerizing display of light and reflection. Some columns are crystal clear, while others are murky and opaque, each reflecting the unique characteristics of its source glacier.
Walking through the exhibit was a deeply moving experience. With the world's glaciers shrinking rapidly, the Library of Water serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of climate change. It's a place for reflection, a space to contemplate the fragility of our planet and the importance of preserving its natural wonders. The floor of the library is inscribed with adjectives related to weather in both English and Icelandic, adding another layer of depth to the experience.
Olivia was particularly moved by the exhibit, as it resonated with her passion for environmental conservation. Ethan, surprisingly, was captivated by the chess board that was set up in one of the rooms. Apparently, chess is quite popular in Iceland. While he played a game with a local, Olivia and I explored the rest of the museum, admiring the views of the bay and the town.
Before leaving Grundarfjörður, we stopped by Álfar og Tröll ehf, a delightful gift shop filled with unique Icelandic souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a special memento of our trip, and this place did not disappoint. The shop is filled with locally made crafts, traditional woolen products, handcrafted jewelry, and Viking-inspired memorabilia. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted wool scarf for Olivia and a small Viking ship for Ethan. I even found a quirky troll figurine for myself, a reminder of the mythical creatures that are said to inhabit this land.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a fine dining experience at Sjávarkjallarinn. This renowned seafood restaurant in Reykjavik is located in a cozy cellar and is known for its innovative and delicious dishes. The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, with candlelight and creative lighting creating a warm ambiance.
We opted for the chef's tasting menu, a three-course culinary journey that showcased the best of Icelandic seafood. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From the lobster bisque to the grilled cod, every bite was a delight. The service was impeccable, with the waiters explaining each dish in detail. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. From the fiery depths of Eldborg Crater to the tranquil reflections of the Library of Water, this region offers a wealth of natural and cultural wonders. It's a place that ignites the imagination and nourishes the soul. And to share it all with my friends makes the experience even more memorable.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lysufjöll and the Dagverðará River [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems this peninsula has in store for us. I've heard that Hvanneyri Pub is a must-visit, so that's something to look forward to as well!
