Trieste: A Promising Start
Our first day in Trieste city was nothing short of enchanting. From the moment we stepped off the train, the city's unique blend of Italian and Austro-Hungarian influences captivated us. It felt like stepping into a living postcard, with stunning architecture and a vibrant atmosphere that promised a memorable family adventure. I was eager to explore every corner, camera in hand, ready to capture the essence of this captivating city. Ethan was already buzzing with excitement, his curiosity piqued by the new sights and sounds. Olivia, ever the composed one, was looking forward to soaking in the culture and history that Trieste had to offer. After months of planning, our family trip to Trieste had finally begun, and I couldn't wait to dive in and experience everything this unique city had in store for us.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Tommaseo, a historic establishment that exudes Viennese charm. The pastries were heavenly, and the coffee was just what I needed to kickstart our day of exploration. Ethan, of course, opted for a chocolate croissant, which he devoured with gusto, leaving a delightful mess of chocolate on his face. Olivia and I savored our cappuccinos, taking in the elegant surroundings and soaking up the café's rich history. Apparently, Caffè Tommaseo has been around since 1830, and you can feel the history in its walls.

After breakfast, we strolled towards the Canal Grande, a picturesque waterway that cuts through the heart of the city. Built in the 18th century, the canal was once a bustling hub for maritime trade. Today, it’s a tranquil spot lined with charming cafes and shops. Ethan was fascinated by the boats bobbing gently in the water, and I couldn't resist snapping a few photos of the colorful buildings reflected in the canal's surface. Olivia pointed out the Gopcevich Palace, with its distinctive red and yellow façade, adding a touch of architectural history to our leisurely walk. I read somewhere that there is even a small torpedo boat lying on the canal bed, which is quite a quirky fact.

Trieste is more than just a city; it's a confluence of cultures, a place where history whispers from every corner, inviting you to explore its hidden gems.
As we continued our exploration, we made our way to Piazza Unità d'Italia, the heart of Trieste and the largest sea-facing square in Europe. The sheer scale of the piazza was breathtaking, surrounded by magnificent buildings that showcased the city's grandeur. Ethan was immediately drawn to the fountain, Fontana dei Quattro Continenti, marveling at the statues representing the different continents. Olivia and I took a moment to admire the Palazzo del Governo and the City Hall, appreciating their architectural details and historical significance. The square was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the pleasant weather and vibrant atmosphere. The blue lights on the pavement, marking the former water's edge, were a subtle yet poignant reminder of the city's maritime past.

For lunch, we ventured to Trattoria Nerodiseppia, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Triestine cuisine. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the pasta dishes were bursting with flavor. I opted for the risotto with cuttlefish ink, a local specialty that was both delicious and visually striking. Olivia enjoyed the grilled scallops, while Ethan happily devoured a plate of fried calamari. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and the staff were welcoming and attentive. It was the perfect place to refuel after a morning of sightseeing.

After lunch, we indulged in some retail therapy at Tipicamente Triestino, a charming shop that sells local souvenirs and artisanal products. I picked up a few literary cookies imprinted with the faces of Saba, Joyce, and Svevo. Olivia found some beautiful hand-painted ceramics, while Ethan chose a plushie with the Trieste symbol. It was a great place to find unique gifts and mementos of our trip. The owners, Emanuela and Donata, were passionate about local art and history, making the shopping experience even more enjoyable.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Antico Spazzacamino for dinner, a restaurant known for its traditional Triestine dishes and quirky atmosphere. The owner, Edy, was a character, entertaining guests with stories and anecdotes. The menu was presented verbally, based on the day's fresh catches and seasonal ingredients. I savored the mixed fried fish, while Olivia opted for the grilled sardines. Ethan, ever adventurous, tried the cevapcici made of sea bream, a unique twist on a classic dish. The restaurant was filled with vintage objects and musical instruments, creating a cozy and nostalgic ambiance. It felt like stepping back in time, experiencing the authentic flavors and traditions of Trieste.

Before heading back to Hotel Italia, we took one last stroll through Piazza Unità d'Italia, which was even more magical at night. The buildings were illuminated, casting a warm glow over the square, and the sound of live music filled the air. Ethan, tired but content, snuggled close to Olivia as we soaked in the enchanting atmosphere. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Miramare Castle, Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire, and the Roman Theatre of Trieste. I'm particularly excited about Miramare Castle, as I've heard it's absolutely stunning. We'll also be trying out Harry's Piccolo & Bistrò for breakfast, Chimera di Bacco for lunch, and Ristorante Al Bagatto for dinner. And, if we have time, we might stop by Gran Bar Unità for a drink.
Today was a fantastic introduction to Trieste, and I'm already looking forward to discovering more of its hidden gems in the days to come. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for a family adventure. I'm especially grateful that we remembered to pack the sunscreen, as the June sun can be quite strong. However, I did realize that I forgot the travel adapter, which could be a problem for charging our devices. And poor Ethan keeps asking for his favorite toy, which I accidentally left behind. Hopefully, we can find a replacement soon!
