Echoes of the Past, Visions of Beauty

Today was a day of diving deep into Trieste's rich history and architectural beauty. From fairy-tale castles to ancient Roman ruins, the city unveiled its layers of captivating stories. It's amazing how much history is packed into this corner of Italy, a testament to the many cultures that have shaped it over the centuries. We set out with a plan to see as much as possible, and while it was ambitious, every moment was worth it.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Harry's Piccolo & Bistrò. It was a delightful start, with a retro ambiance that gave a nod to the city's charming elegance. Ethan was particularly excited about the pastries, and Olivia and I enjoyed the strong Italian coffee. The location in Piazza Unità d'Italia was perfect, setting the tone for a day of exploration.

Miramare Castle: A Fairytale by the Sea

Our first stop was Miramare Castle, and what a sight it was! As we approached, the castle seemed to rise out of the Adriatic, a stunning white structure against the blue sea. I learned that it was built in the 19th century for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. The architecture was a mix of Gothic, medieval, and Renaissance styles, a true reflection of the eclectic tastes of the time. The castle is built on a promontory overlooking the Bay of Trieste, offering breathtaking views.

Walking through the castle rooms, I could almost feel the presence of Maximilian and Charlotte. Each room was lavishly decorated, with intricate details and rich tapestries. The sea influenced the interior design, with the color blue dominating the tapestries on the first floor. Ethan was fascinated by the stories of Maximilian's travels and his eventual fate in Mexico. Olivia was captivated by the elegant furnishings and the romantic history of the castle. Wandering through the castle, it felt like stepping back in time, imagining the lives of the royalty who once called this place home.

The gardens surrounding Miramare Castle were just as impressive as the castle itself. Spanning 22 hectares, the park was designed by Carl Junker, featuring a diverse range of trees and plants. We strolled along the paths, enjoying the sea breeze and the stunning views of the Gulf of Trieste. Ethan loved running around the gardens, discovering hidden corners and exotic plants. The Miramare Park stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Adriatic Sea and was planned and arranged by Carl Junker, according to the wishes of Archduke Maximilian. Maximilian achieved a perfect synthesis of nature and art, Mediterranean scents and austere European forms, recreating an absolutely unique setting.

The stones of Trieste whisper tales of empires, love, and the enduring beauty of human creation.

Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire: A Blend of History and Faith

Next, we headed to the Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire, perched atop Trieste's historic hill. This cathedral is more than just a religious edifice; it's a symbol of spiritual devotion and civic identity. Its location on San Giusto Hill, overlooking the Adriatic, gives it a commanding presence. The cathedral's history dates back to Roman times, with remnants of an early Roman temple found beneath it. Over the centuries, it evolved into a Christian basilica, eventually becoming the cathedral we see today.

The architecture of the Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The exterior is constructed with local limestone, giving it a humble yet noble appearance. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with apsidal mosaics depicting Our Lady of the Assumption and Christ between Saints Justus and Servolus, crafted by master craftsmen from Veneto in the 12th-13th centuries. These mosaics were stunning, showcasing the artistic prowess of the time. The cathedral also houses several chapels, each with its own unique history and significance. The bell tower, built using stones from the nearby Roman amphitheater, is a compelling blend of repurposed antiquity and medieval architecture.

Ethan was intrigued by the stories of Saint Justus, the city's patron saint, and Olivia appreciated the serene atmosphere of the cathedral. For me, the Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire was a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the rich cultural heritage of Trieste. It was fascinating to learn that the current form of the cathedral was largely completed by the 14th century, when two pre-existing churches were unified into a single structure. This fusion is still visible in the architectural layout, which showcases the hallmarks of Romanesque style with hints of Gothic elements.

Roman Theatre of Trieste: Echoes of Ancient Performances

Our final stop of the day was the Roman Theatre of Trieste, tucked into the foot of San Giusto Hill. This well-preserved archaeological site offers a glimpse into the city's ancient roots. Built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Tiberius, the theatre reflects Trieste's significance within the Roman Empire. It could accommodate up to 6,000 spectators, who gathered for entertainment, civic discourse, and celebrations.

As we walked around the structure, I tried to imagine the applause of Roman citizens echoing off the stone. The theatre faced the sea, which would have formed a dramatic backdrop for the performances. Ethan enjoyed running up and down the ancient steps, pretending to be a Roman actor. Olivia was impressed by the theatre's strategic placement and the architectural sophistication of the Romans.

It's incredible to think that for centuries, the Roman Theatre of Trieste lay hidden beneath layers of development. It wasn't until the 1930s that it was unearthed and restored to its former prominence. Today, the theatre occasionally comes back to life with open-air performances, concerts, and cultural events. It serves as a reminder of Trieste's long-standing role as a cultural crossroads.

A Culinary Journey Through Trieste

For lunch, we stopped at Chimera di Bacco, a restaurant known for its Italian cuisine. The food was simple and delicious, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. Ethan enjoyed his pasta, and Olivia and I savored the local wine. The service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable.

The atmosphere was lively, and the staff was welcoming. We enjoyed a variety of seafood dishes, each prepared with care and attention to detail. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the San Sabba Rice Mill National Monument and Museum, Grotta Gigante, and the Victory Lighthouse. It promises to be another day of discovery and adventure. I'm particularly interested in visiting the San Sabba Rice Mill, as it offers a sobering reminder of the atrocities of World War II. Ethan is excited about exploring the Grotta Gigante, one of the largest show caves in the world. We'll also visit the Victory Lighthouse, which offers panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

Before I close, I must mention that I forgot to pack the travel adapter! Charging the camera and our phones will be a challenge, but we'll figure it out. And poor Ethan is missing his favorite toy, which we left back in Hawthorne. I'll have to find a replacement tomorrow. I'm also looking forward to visiting La Tana del Bianconiglio Trieste tomorrow, a shop I found that seems to have some interesting things for kids. It is supposed to be fun to visit, and I am sure Ethan will enjoy it.

Trieste continues to surprise and delight us. Its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a truly unique destination. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Until tomorrow!
