A Day of Discovery in Trieste

Today was a day of exploring Trieste beyond the usual tourist spots, diving into nature, history, and even a bit of vintage shopping. It’s amazing how much this city has to offer, and I'm thrilled to share our experiences. The weather was perfect, a sunny day with a gentle breeze, ideal for outdoor adventures. I started the day with a hearty breakfast, fueled by excitement for what lay ahead.

Our first stop was the Antica Hostaria da Libero for breakfast. It's a charming spot, and while they don't have a physical menu, the friendly staff verbally presented their offerings. I opted for a traditional Italian breakfast, and it was the perfect way to kickstart our day.

Val Rosandra Nature Reserve: A Hiker's Paradise

Next, we ventured to the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve. This place is a true gem, a short drive from Trieste, right on the Slovenian border. The reserve is known for its stunning cliffs, lush greenery, and the Rosandra River, which carves its way through the valley.

The drive itself was scenic, passing through charming villages and offering glimpses of the Karst landscape. As we approached the reserve, the dramatic cliffs came into view, hinting at the natural beauty that awaited us. Ethan was particularly excited, eager to explore and discover the wildlife.

We chose one of the many trails, a path that wound through the woodlands and alongside the riverbanks. The hike was invigorating, the air fresh and clean, and the views were simply breathtaking. The well-maintained paths made it accessible for all of us, even Ethan, who usually tires quickly. Along the way, we spotted various bird species and unique plants, making it a nature lover's paradise.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

I made sure to wear my comfortable walking shoes, a decision I was very grateful for as the trails were rocky in places. I remembered to pack sunscreen, learning from my mistake on day one. The Val Rosandra Nature Reserve is also a popular spot for rock climbing, and we saw several climbers scaling the cliffs. It was impressive to watch their skill and precision.

The Rosandra River is the only river in the Province of Trieste that flows above ground, which is pretty special. We hiked along the ancient Roman aqueduct, which added a historical dimension to our nature walk. The combination of natural beauty and historical significance made this experience truly unique.

Montuzza Fountain: A Glimpse into History

After our refreshing hike, we headed back towards the city center to see the Montuzza Fountain. This fountain has an interesting story; it was built in 1938 to celebrate Benito Mussolini's visit to Trieste. Originally intended as a temporary installation, it has survived through the years, a silent witness to history.

The fountain is located in a memorial park and stands as a stark reminder of a different era. Its design is typical of the fascist period, with a somewhat imposing and austere appearance. It's made of concrete covered with marble and stone slabs, and while it's no longer functional, it remains a notable landmark.

Olivia found the fountain particularly interesting, given her background in history. We discussed the significance of such monuments and their place in the city's narrative. Ethan, of course, was more interested in climbing around the base, but we managed to steer him towards a more respectful appreciation of the site.

Arco di Riccardo: Echoes of Ancient Rome

Our next stop was the Arco di Riccardo, a Roman archway dating back to the 1st century AD. This ancient arch is one of the few remnants of the Roman city walls and stands in the charming Piazza del Barbacan.

The Arco di Riccardo is a testament to Trieste's rich history, a tangible link to its Roman past. As we approached the arch, I couldn't help but marvel at its resilience, standing strong for over two thousand years. The intricate stone carvings and the way it has withstood the test of time are truly remarkable. It’s amazing to think that this arch was once part of the city's defensive walls.

There are several theories about the origin of its name. One suggests it's named after Richard I of England, who was supposedly held captive in Trieste. Another, more likely theory, is that it comes from the word cardo, referring to the main north-south road in Roman settlements. Whatever the true origin, the Arco di Riccardo is a captivating historical landmark.

The Piazza del Barbacan, where the arch is located, is a vibrant and lively square, surrounded by colorful buildings and bustling cafes. It's a great spot to soak in the atmosphere of the city and imagine what life was like in Roman times. We took some photos, capturing the arch from different angles, trying to convey its grandeur and historical significance.

Vintage Finds at Vintaggioso

After our historical explorations, we decided to indulge in some shopping. I remembered reading about Vintaggioso, a vintage shop on Via Mazzini, and thought it would be a fun place to check out.

Vintaggioso is a small shop managed by a young entrepreneur named Gregorio. He curates a selection of quality vintage clothing, with brands from America and England. The shop has a great vibe, and Gregorio is passionate about promoting the culture of reuse and sustainability.

I found a classic denim jacket that fit perfectly, and Olivia picked up a stylish vintage scarf. Ethan, surprisingly, was also interested, finding a retro t-shirt with a cool design. It was a fun experience, and we left with some unique pieces that we'll treasure.

A Culinary Evening: Pep's Fish House and Trattoria Al Collio

For lunch, we headed to Pep's Fish House, a restaurant known for its seafood. The location was nice and cosy. Service and food was excellent!

In the evening, we had dinner at Trattoria Al Collio Trieste. It was fantastic. The menu focused on seafood and meat dishes, using fresh, seasonal ingredients. We started with a mixed seafood platter, followed by homemade pasta with clams and a perfectly grilled steak. The portions were generous, and the flavors were authentic and delicious.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and discovery. We left feeling satisfied and content, with a deeper appreciation for Trieste's culinary scene.

As the sun set, we strolled back to Hotel Italia, reflecting on our experiences. Today was a reminder that Trieste is a city of hidden gems, waiting to be discovered. From the natural beauty of Val Rosandra to the historical landmarks and vintage finds, there's something for everyone in this captivating city.

Tomorrow is our last day in Trieste, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Castello di San Giusto, the Municipal Botanical Garden, and the Trieste War Memorial. We'll also be having breakfast at Mangia E Fuggi, lunch at Al Porton, and dinner at Arcoriccardo Ristorante. And, to cap it all off, we'll be visiting Gran Malabar for a drink. It's going to be a busy day, but I'm excited to see what else Trieste has to offer.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” It is safe to say that after this trip, my family and I have read several pages of the beautiful book that is Trieste.

Until tomorrow!
