Day 6: Trieste's Hidden Gems: A Day of Stairs, History, and Culinary Delights
Exploring Trieste's architectural wonders and historical sites, from the Giants' Stairway to the Synagogue, with local culinary experiences.
Stairways to History
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Trieste, exploring its unique blend of history, architecture, and local culture. From grand stairways to significant religious sites and fascinating museums, every corner of this city has a story to tell. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you just set out to explore.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Osteria Bier Stube Trieste. It was a cozy spot, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and local pastries filled the air. Ethan was particularly excited about the pastries, and Olivia and I enjoyed some strong Italian coffee to kickstart our day. After breakfast, we set off to conquer the Giants' Stairway, also known as Scala dei Giganti. This monumental staircase connects Piazza Goldoni with San Giusto Hill, offering a dramatic and scenic route through the city. As we started our ascent, I couldn't help but admire the neoclassical architecture. The stairs, built in 1907, were designed by the Berlams, a local family of architects. The double stairways, adorned with niches, statues, and small viewpoints, provided a perfect spot to pause and take in the panoramic views of Trieste. Ethan, full of energy, raced ahead, counting the steps as he went. Olivia and I followed at a more leisurely pace, enjoying the morning sun and the vibrant city life unfolding below.
Discover Trieste's Giants' Stairway, a historical landmark combining stunning architecture and breathtaking views of the Adriatic.
Trieste is a city where history and culture intertwine seamlessly, offering a unique perspective at every turn.
Reaching the top of the Giants' Stairway, we took a moment to catch our breath and admire the view. From here, you can see the entire city, stretching out towards the Adriatic Sea. The fresh sea breeze and the stunning vista made the climb well worth it. Continuing our exploration, we made our way to the Trieste Synagogue, a significant landmark for the Jewish community in Trieste. The synagogue, also known as Tempio Israelitico di Trieste, is located on Via S. Francesco D'Assisi. Built between 1908 and 1912, it replaced four smaller synagogues that had previously served the community. Designed by Ruggero Berlam and his son Arduino, the synagogue stands as one of the largest in Europe. As we approached, I was struck by its imposing structure and the blend of architectural styles. The exterior, with its Romanesque Revival design, features Middle Eastern-inspired decorations and stylized Jewish symbols. The large central dome, visible from a distance, adds to its grandeur. Inside, the synagogue is equally impressive, with a spacious prayer hall divided into three naves and adorned with intricate details. It was meant to satisfy the religious needs of a growing Community that, in 1938, had almost 6,000 members. The synagogue was closed in 1942 following the instigation of the race laws under the Fascist regime. It was devastated by fascist squads and later, during the Nazi occupation, it was used as a storehouse for works of art and books seized from the Jewish houses. The ritual silvers of the community were preserved from the plunder thanks to a clever hiding place inside the very building. It was a somber reminder of the city's complex history and the challenges faced by its Jewish community.

After immersing ourselves in the history and architecture of the synagogue, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to Rustiko, a local restaurant known for its Balkan cuisine. The reviews raved about its authentic flavors and cozy atmosphere, and we were eager to try it out. Rustiko is a unique spot in Trieste, offering a taste of Serbian and Balkan traditions. The restaurant’s mission is to introduce the genuine flavors of Balkan cuisine to enthusiasts, with recipes passed down from grandmothers and ingredients sourced directly from farms across the border. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance. The décor was charming, with rustic touches that transported us to a traditional Serbian home. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel welcome and comfortable. We started with a selection of appetizers, including some delicious local cheeses and cured meats. For the main course, I opted for the mixed grill, a generous platter of various grilled meats that showcased the restaurant's expertise. Olivia chose a vegetarian dish, a flavorful stew of beans and vegetables, while Ethan happily devoured a plate of ćevapčići, small grilled sausages that were a hit with him. The meal was a delightful culinary journey, and we left Rustiko feeling satisfied and content.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we continued our exploration of Trieste with a visit to the Railway Museum of Trieste Campo Marzio. Located on the site of the former station of the Parenzana narrow-gauge railway, the museum is a treasure trove of railway history. The museum was founded in 1975 by a group of railway enthusiasts and workers, with the goal of preserving historical railway material. It officially opened in 1985 and has since grown to house an impressive collection of locomotives, carriages, and railway artifacts. As we walked through the museum, I was fascinated by the various exhibits. The collection includes steam locomotives, diesel and electric locomotives, and several railcars from different eras. Ethan was particularly excited about the old trains, climbing aboard and pretending to be a conductor. Olivia enjoyed learning about the history of the Parenzana railway, which once connected Trieste with towns along the Istrian coast. Despite the museum being under renovation, we could still appreciate the historical significance and the dedication of those who worked to preserve it. It was a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the importance of railways in the development of Trieste and the surrounding region.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind with a drink at Harry'S Bar Trieste. This cozy bar is known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. We ordered some refreshing drinks and sat outside, soaking in the ambiance of the city. Ethan enjoyed a non-alcoholic cocktail, while Olivia and I savored some local wine. It was the perfect way to reflect on our day of exploration and discovery. The bar is located in the heart of Trieste, making it a convenient spot to relax and people-watch. The staff were courteous and attentive, adding to the overall pleasant experience. It was the perfect way to cap off a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.
