A Final Bow to Yakushima's Majesty

As my time on this enchanting island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had. Yakushima has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving you with a sense of peace and wonder that’s hard to describe. Today, I set out to explore a couple of final gems before catching the ferry back to the mainland. It’s bittersweet, knowing that this chapter is closing, but I’m also filled with anticipation for the journey home and sharing these stories with Olivia and Ethan.

My last day began with a delightful breakfast at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. I opted for a scoop of local fruit gelato, which was the perfect refreshing start to the day. The creamy, sweet treat was a delightful reminder of the island's natural bounty. Fueled and ready, I set off towards my first destination: Ohko Waterfall.

Ohko Waterfall: A Symphony of Water and Stone

The drive to Ohko Waterfall was scenic, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the coastline. As I approached, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation. The parking area was conveniently located, and a short, accessible path led to the viewing platform. Even though it is the summer, the walk was very pleasant.

The sight of Ohko Waterfall was nothing short of breathtaking. Dropping 88 meters from a hornstone bedrock cliff, the water plunged into a pool below with tremendous force. The sheer power and scale of the waterfall were awe-inspiring. I could feel the cool mist on my face as I watched the water crash down, creating a symphony of sound and motion.

I spent a good hour simply soaking in the scene, taking photos, and marveling at nature's artistry. The surrounding forest was equally captivating, with its vibrant green foliage and unique plant life. It was easy to see why Ohko Waterfall is considered one of Japan's best waterfalls.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

Yakushima National Park: A Final Immersion in Nature

Next on my itinerary was Yakushima National Park, a sprawling sanctuary encompassing much of the island's interior. I decided to revisit a section of the park I hadn't fully explored earlier in the week, eager to absorb as much of its beauty as possible before leaving. The park is vast, offering a diverse range of ecosystems, from ancient cedar forests to rugged mountain peaks.

I chose a trail that meandered through a dense forest, sunlight filtering through the canopy and illuminating the moss-covered ground. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the scent of cedar and damp earth. It was incredibly peaceful, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Hawthorne.

As I hiked, I kept an eye out for the park's famous inhabitants: the Yakushima macaque and the Yaku deer. While I didn't spot any macaques this time, I did encounter a small group of deer grazing peacefully in a clearing. They seemed unfazed by my presence, allowing me to observe them for a few minutes before they disappeared back into the forest.

The park's biodiversity is astounding. From subtropical to temperate zones, the vegetation thrives thanks to the island's heavy rainfall. I was particularly captivated by the yakusugi, ancient cedar trees that have stood for over a thousand years. Their gnarled trunks and deep roots tell stories of resilience and longevity, a testament to the power of nature.

Tomari Book Store: A Literary Souvenir

Before heading to dinner, I made a stop at Tomari Book Store, hoping to find a memento of my trip. I ended up purchasing a beautiful book of photographs showcasing Yakushima's landscapes. It's the perfect way to keep the memories alive and share the island's beauty with Olivia and Ethan.

Shiosai: A Farewell Feast

For my final dinner on Yakushima, I chose Shiosai, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood. I indulged in a multi-course meal featuring local fish, sashimi, and grilled vegetables. Each dish was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. It was a fitting culinary farewell to this incredible island.

As I savored my meal, I reflected on the past nine days. Yakushima had exceeded all my expectations. From the ancient cedar forests to the pristine coastline, the island's natural beauty had captivated me. The solitude of traveling solo had allowed for deep introspection and a renewed appreciation for the simple things in life. I thought about Olivia and Ethan and how much they would have loved this place. I made a mental note to plan a family trip here in the future.

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading back to Kagoshima and then making my way back to the UK. It’s going to be a long journey, but I’m bringing back a treasure trove of memories and experiences. Yakushima, you’ve been an absolute dream. Thank you for the adventure.

I'll be sure to share more photos and stories once I'm back home. Until then, safe travels!
