Discover the magic of Kyoto with a visit to Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka, and savor local flavors in this immersive journey.
Kyoto's Timeless Charm
Today was a day of pure enchantment, immersing ourselves in the heart of Kyoto's ancient beauty. From the iconic Kiyomizu-dera to the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, every moment felt like stepping back in time. The crisp winter air added a special touch, making the experience even more magical.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hanasaki, a delightful start that fueled us for the adventures ahead. Lena, Sophie and I were all excited, but I think Sophie was the most excited of us all. She kept asking if we were going to see real geishas. I had to explain to her that geishas aren't just out and about, but she might see women dressed in Kimonos around the streets. I must admit, I was pretty excited too. As a brewery technician, I appreciate the dedication to tradition and craftsmanship, and Kyoto seemed to be brimming with both.
First on our itinerary was the majestic Kiyomizu-dera. Getting there involved a bit of an uphill walk, which was fine by me, though Lena did start complaining a bit. Nestled on the hillside, the temple offered a commanding view of the city. The main hall, with its wooden stage, was truly a sight to behold. It's amazing to think that this structure was built without the use of nails! Sophie was fascinated by the massive pillars supporting the stage, and I found myself marveling at the engineering ingenuity.

Even in January, the temple exuded a serene beauty. Though the cherry blossoms and lush greenery were absent, the delicate trees and snow-dusted rooftops created a tranquil winter landscape. I could only imagine how stunning it must be during spring and autumn. We took our time exploring the various halls and shrines within the complex, each with its own unique charm.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the timeless traditions that permeate every aspect of life.
One of the highlights was the Otowa Waterfall, where we watched visitors drinking from the three separate streams, each said to offer different benefits – longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. We opted for the longevity stream, hoping for many more years of family adventures together. Sophie wanted to try all three, but Lena wisely steered her away, reminding her that greediness is never a good thing.
After Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down the historic streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These narrow, sloping lanes were lined with traditional wooden storefronts, teahouses, and shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. It felt like stepping into a scene from a historical drama. The atmosphere was enchanting, with the gentle sounds of traditional music and the aroma of incense filling the air.

Lena was in her element, browsing through the various shops. She has such a great eye for detail and appreciates the craftsmanship that goes into these traditional items. She ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf and a set of handcrafted chopsticks. Sophie, of course, was drawn to the sweets shops, and we indulged in some delicious mochi and matcha ice cream.
As we wandered, we came across Kazari Nishiki, a charming shop offering seasonal Japanese goods and Western clothing with a Kyoto touch. The owner's attention to detail was evident in every corner of the store, and we found ourselves admiring the cute crafts and stylish clothing. Lena even got some tips on coordinating a facemask and scarf for a fashionable outing, something that's quite essential these days.

For lunch, we treated ourselves to a memorable experience at French Dining Top of Kyoto. This revolving restaurant on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel offered panoramic views of the city while we savored exquisite French cuisine. The combination of Japanese and Western influences was truly delightful. Sophie was mesmerized by the rotating view, and Lena and I enjoyed the elegant atmosphere and impeccable service. It was definitely a splurge, but worth every penny.

After a morning of cultural immersion and a luxurious lunch, we were ready for a change of pace. We decided to try some local cuisine for dinner at Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha. I had never tried Okonomiyaki before, so I was really looking forward to it. This cozy restaurant offered a unique dining experience, with the chef preparing the okonomiyaki right in front of us on a teppan grill. The aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water. The okonomiyaki was delicious, a savory pancake filled with layers of noodles, vegetables, and meat. Sophie was a bit hesitant at first, but she ended up devouring her portion. It was a fun and satisfying meal, a perfect way to end our day of exploration.

I'm already looking forward to another day of unforgettable experiences in this captivating city. I think it's safe to say that Kyoto has captured our hearts, and we can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. And hopefully, Sophie will finally see a real Geisha!
The one thing that I forgot to pack was my hiking boots! I am sure that I will be regretting that decision tomorrow.
