Kyoto Awakening

Day one in Kyoto, and I'm already captivated. It's a city that whispers stories from centuries past, a place where ancient traditions dance with modern life. Today, Lena, Sophie and I dove headfirst into the cultural heart of Japan, exploring serene shrines, bustling markets, and the enchanting geisha district. It was a day of discovery, a day of connection, and a day that has left me eager for more.

Our Kyoto adventure began with a hearty breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. This place is a real gem! The cozy atmosphere was perfect for fueling up before a busy day. I opted for a classic Japanese breakfast set, while Lena enjoyed a western-style omelet. Sophie, predictably, devoured her toast with jam. I made sure to grab a coffee for myself, much needed after our long flight from Frankfurt!

With our bellies full, we set off to Yasaka Shrine. The crisp January air nipped at our cheeks as we approached the vermillion gates. Even in winter, the shrine exuded a vibrant energy. We learned that Yasaka Shrine dates back to 656 AD, with a history intertwined with battling epidemics and the famous Gion Festival. The intricate details of the architecture, the gentle sway of paper lanterns, and the quiet reverence of the visitors created a palpable sense of history. Sophie was immediately fascinated by the *omikuji* (fortune paper slips) and insisted on getting one. Lena helped her tie it to the designated spot, hoping for good luck in the year ahead.

Next on our itinerary was Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. Founded in 1202 by Eisai, the monk who introduced Zen Buddhism and tea to Japan, Kenninji offered a tranquil escape from the city's bustle. As we walked through the temple grounds, the silence was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant chime of a bell. The Zen gardens were meticulously raked, each stone and grain of sand placed with intention. I tried my hand at meditation, attempting to clear my mind as the monks do, but Sophie's whispers about dragons and princesses kept intruding. Still, the peaceful atmosphere was undeniably restorative.

The highlights of Kenninji were definitely the stunning Twin Dragons ceiling painting in the Dharma Hall, commissioned to celebrate the temple's 800th anniversary, and the Wind and Thunder Gods screen. The artistry and detail were simply breathtaking. Lena, with her keen eye for aesthetics, was particularly impressed. I even managed to snap a few photos, hoping to capture the essence of the temple's beauty to share on my blog.

After immersing ourselves in the serenity of Kenninji, we ventured into Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The narrow streets were lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, their facades hinting at the secrets within. While spotting a geiko or maiko is never guaranteed, we did catch a glimpse of one hurrying to an appointment. The grace and poise she exuded, even in that fleeting moment, were captivating. We explored Hanami-koji Street, known for its preserved architecture and exclusive teahouses. I imagined the stories these walls could tell, the centuries of traditions and artistry that have unfolded within them.

Lunchtime found us at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a restaurant specializing in *tonkatsu* (deep-fried pork cutlet). We all agreed that it was some of the best we'd ever tasted. The pork was tender and juicy, the breading perfectly crispy, and the dipping sauces were flavorful and unique. Sophie was a big fan of the kid's meal, while Lena and I savored every bite of our set meals. The free-flow cabbage was a welcome addition, adding a refreshing crunch to the rich dish.

With renewed energy, we headed to Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This covered arcade was a sensory overload, a vibrant mix of souvenir shops, clothing boutiques, and food stalls. Sophie was immediately drawn to the Gashapon machines, and Lena found a beautiful silk scarf. I was on the hunt for some unique local crafts. We found a store that had beautiful handmade items and ceramics. Shinkyogoku was built in 1872, and has a history as one of the major entertainment districts of Japan. It was a great place to find souvenirs and experience the energy of modern Kyoto.

As evening approached, we made our way to Yasakadori Enraku for dinner. Located near Kenninji Temple, this restaurant offered a tranquil setting with private rooms. We indulged in a traditional Kyoto dinner, savoring the delicate flavors and artistic presentation of each dish. The *oden* was particularly delicious, the broth rich and savory. The atmosphere was serene and intimate, a perfect way to end a day of exploration. I read that the restaurant sometimes has Maiko performances, but we didn't see one tonight.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji (famous for its rock garden), and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. I'm particularly excited about Kinkaku-ji, as I've seen so many photos of its shimmering beauty. Lena is looking forward to Ryoan-ji's Zen garden, and Sophie is already dreaming of exploring the Imperial Palace. We'll also try to find L'Escamoteur, a bar that sounds like it has a unique atmosphere.

Back at Hotel ALZA KYOTO, I'm reflecting on our first day in Kyoto. It's a city that seamlessly blends the ancient and the modern, a place where tradition and innovation coexist in harmony. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, to create memories that will last a lifetime. Oh, and before I forget, Sophie was inconsolable because she forgot her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Snuggles. Lena promised to buy her a new one tomorrow. I also realized I forgot my hiking boots, which might limit our ability to explore some of the trails around Kyoto. Lena reminded me that I should have made a list!
