Today was a whirlwind of quintessential Montepulciano experiences! From witnessing the excitement surrounding the upcoming Bravio delle botti to exploring the town's historical treasures and indulging in some retail therapy, it was a day that truly captured the essence of this Tuscan gem. Klaus and I dove headfirst into the local culture, and I'm so excited to share all the details.

Our day began with the promise of a hearty Tuscan breakfast at La Vineria di Montepulciano. As a freelance horticultural consultant, I always appreciate starting my day with fresh, local ingredients. The reviews I had read raved about their cheese and condiments, especially the cheese jams, so I knew we were in for a treat. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of a beautiful view made it even more enticing. We savored every bite, fueling up for a day of exploration. The staff was super nice and helped me choose the vegan options in the menu with a good wine. They even prepared a take away bag in no time!

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set out to explore the town, and I could feel the excitement in the air for the Bravio delle botti. The race itself isn't until August, but preparations were clearly underway. The Bravio delle botti is a traditional barrel race among the town's eight contrades (districts). Apparently, this event has been held in Montepulciano since 1974, replacing an equivalent horse race dating back to 1373. I learned that the contrades compete fiercely, pushing heavy wine barrels uphill through the narrow streets of Montepulciano. It's a real test of strength, skill, and teamwork!

Next, we visited the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, a beautiful cathedral that dominates Montepulciano's main square. The church has a structure in brickwork and stones. The interior was serene and awe-inspiring, with its soaring arches and intricate details. Klaus, with his architect's eye, was particularly impressed by the architectural design. We spent some time admiring the artwork and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. I found myself reflecting on the history and artistry contained within those walls.

After the cathedral, we made our way to the Pulcinella tower. Perched on Piazza Michelozzo, the Pulcinella Clock Tower features a charming clown figure poised to strike the bell. It’s said that a Neapolitan priest decided to place a statue of Pulcinella there in the seventeenth century, while others maintain that it is another Renaissance masquerade mask, the “Mangia” from Siena, misidentified as the Neapolitan mask. The tower predates the church of Sant'Agostino it belongs to. It was such a fun and quirky sight to see! We watched as Pulcinella struck the hour, a delightful reminder of the town's unique character.

Of course, no day in Montepulciano would be complete without a bit of shopping. I had spotted TRA NINNOLI & NANNOLI ABBIGLIAMENTO DONNA WOMEN'S FASHION STORE earlier, and I couldn't resist popping in. The store had a delightful selection of Italian women's clothing. I ended up finding a beautiful silk scarf that I know will remind me of this trip every time I wear it. Klaus even found a stylish beret there. It was fun to see him branch out from his usual minimalist style!

For lunch, we decided to try Il Teatro Cucina Toscana. The staff was super nice, the views are spectacular and the service is friendly. Many guests say that waiters serve good ravioli, porchetta and fish here. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the flavors of Tuscany while overlooking the rolling hills. It was the perfect way to recharge before continuing our adventures. The restaurant is near the Piazzetta del Teatro, in the heart of this little town of steep roads.

As evening approached, we made our way to Baccano Hostarìa Montepulciano for dinner. Baccano Hostarìa Montepulciano is known for Pici All'aglione and Ribollita. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We enjoyed a delicious meal, savoring the authentic Tuscan flavors and reflecting on all the wonderful experiences we had shared throughout the day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Ercolani Cellars - Underground City and Museum and Avignonesi Winery Fattoria Le Capezzine. I am particularly excited about the wine tasting at Avignonesi Winery Fattoria Le Capezzine. I've heard so much about their wines, and I can't wait to experience them firsthand. We will also visit Porta del Pianello. And of course, we'll be sure to find a cozy spot at Enoteca La Dolce Vita - Montepulciano for a nightcap.

Montepulciano has truly captured my heart. Its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty is simply irresistible. As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place with my beloved Klaus. I am excited about tomorrow's adventure!
