Tuscan Views and Ancient Echoes

Today in Montepulciano was a delightful blend of the old and the new, the beautiful and the thought-provoking. Klaus and I set out to explore more of this charming town, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From the depths of a historic wine cellar to the heights of scenic overlooks, Montepulciano revealed its many layers, each more captivating than the last.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Al Tocco. It’s a small and cozy spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. I had a simple cappuccino and a pastry, while Klaus enjoyed a more substantial breakfast with eggs and local cheese. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this beautiful Tuscan town. It’s funny, I’ve picked up a few German idioms since moving to Heidelberg, but sometimes I miss the simplicity of Kiwi expressions. Still, I find myself appreciating the nuances of a new culture, much like the subtle notes in a fine wine.

With our appetites sated, we made our way to our first destination: Contucci. The Contucci winery is not just a winery; it’s a piece of Montepulciano’s history. The family's Palazzo sits on the Piazza Grande, directly across from the Town Hall. Andrea Contucci traces his family's winemaking roots back to the year 1008. Imagine, over a thousand years of tradition! As we descended into the ancient cellars, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The cool, dark space was filled with the scent of aging wine, and the walls seemed to whisper stories of generations past. Klaus, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the structural details of the cellar, pointing out the ingenious ways in which the space was designed to maintain the perfect temperature and humidity for aging wine.

We were given a tour by a very knowledgeable young woman who explained the Contucci family’s long-standing commitment to traditional winemaking methods. They still blend their Vino Nobile with native varietals like Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia Nera. I learned that Contucci wines aim to reflect their origin and that the family takes pride in using the longer, traditional name for their wine: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. She guided us through a tasting of several of their wines, each one more impressive than the last. The Vino Nobile was, of course, the star of the show – a rich, complex wine with notes of cherry and spice. I could taste the Tuscan sun in every sip.

Wine is bottled poetry.

After the delightful wine tasting at Contucci, we braced ourselves for a rather different experience: the Museo della Tortura di Montepulciano. I must admit, I was a bit hesitant. I’m generally drawn to lighter, more uplifting experiences, but I also believe it’s important to confront the darker aspects of human history. Klaus, with his keen interest in history and culture, was particularly eager to visit, and I decided to join him, steeling myself for what we might find.

The museum is located in Palazzo Bellarmino. Inside, the atmosphere was somber, the lighting dim. The exhibits detailed various methods of torture used throughout history, from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Age. Some of the instruments were truly gruesome – the iron maiden, the rack, the thumbscrews. It was a stark reminder of the cruelty that humans are capable of inflicting on one another. The museum doesn't emphasize blood or horror, but the instruments speak for themselves. The displays included detailed explanations in multiple languages, providing historical context for each device. It was both disturbing and educational, highlighting the importance of respecting the opinions and beliefs of others, which are the foundations of modern democracy. As we walked through the exhibits, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness and a renewed appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Emerging from the museum, we both felt the need for some fresh air and a change of scenery. Fortunately, our next stop was just the remedy: Punto Panoramico. This scenic overlook offers breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside. As we stood there, gazing out at the rolling hills and vineyards, the horrors of the torture museum seemed to fade into the distance. The landscape was bathed in the warm afternoon light, and the air was filled with the scent of wildflowers. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature.

Klaus, ever the romantic, put his arm around me and pointed out the various landmarks in the distance – the medieval towers of Siena, the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia. We stood there for a long time, simply soaking in the view and enjoying each other’s company. It was the perfect antidote to the darkness we had just experienced.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante ai 4 Venti for lunch. This charming restaurant is located right on the Piazza Grande, offering stunning views of the Palazzo Comunale and the surrounding buildings. The restaurant prides itself on using local ingredients, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Tuscan dishes. I opted for the pici pasta with wild boar ragu, while Klaus chose the Florentine steak. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the rich flavors of the region. We sat outside, enjoying the lively atmosphere of the piazza and watching as the locals went about their evening routines.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little pre-dinner aperitivo at Opificio 16 - Enoteca & Wine Bar. This cozy wine bar is known for its extensive selection of local wines and its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a couple of glasses of Rosso di Montepulciano and settled in at a table outside, watching as the sun began to set over the town. The sky was ablaze with color – oranges, pinks, and purples – and the air was filled with the sound of laughter and conversation. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring.

For dinner, we chose E Lucevan le Stelle - Wine Bar Bistro, drawn in by its cozy atmosphere and promising menu. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, with soft lighting and rustic décor. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. For our main courses, I chose the ravioli, and Klaus had the ragout. The food was delicious, and the wine was even better. The service was attentive, and the overall experience was delightful. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Montepulciano.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Montepulciano, including the Bravio delle botti, Cattedrale San Lorenzo and Pulcinella tower. I’m particularly excited about the Bravio delle botti, a historic barrel-rolling competition that sounds like a lot of fun. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of Tuscan adventures. I think I’ll sleep well tonight, dreaming of rolling hills, ancient cellars, and the taste of Vino Nobile on my tongue. Gute Nacht!
