A Sweet Farewell to Yakushima

As my Yakushima adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve had. From the ancient cedar forests to the vibrant coastal landscapes, this island has captured my heart in ways I never imagined. Today was all about savoring those last moments, embracing the natural beauty, and indulging in some of Yakushima’s unique flavors.

My final day began with a simple breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It wasn’t fancy, but there was something comforting about the familiar Japanese fare as I mentally prepared myself to leave this enchanting island. After breakfast, I decided to take a leisurely drive along the World Heritage Listed Coastal Road with Wildlife. The views were absolutely breathtaking. The rugged coastline met the crystal-clear waters, creating a mesmerizing panorama. I stopped frequently to take photos, trying to capture the essence of Yakushima’s coastal charm. The air was fresh and invigorating, filled with the scent of the sea and the distant calls of seabirds.

Driving along the coastal road, I was struck by the sheer diversity of the landscape. One moment, I was surrounded by lush greenery, and the next, I was gazing out at the vast expanse of the ocean. The road wound its way along the coast, offering panoramic views at every turn. I even spotted some of Yakushima’s famous wildlife along the way – a few curious deer grazing peacefully in a nearby field. It was a perfect reminder of the island’s harmonious blend of nature and wildlife. I made sure to stop at several viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective of the island's stunning beauty. I took countless photos, desperate to freeze these moments in time. The turquoise waters, the rugged cliffs, and the verdant forests all combined to create a scene of unparalleled beauty. As I drove, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for having had the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place.

The end of a journey is just the beginning of a thousand new memories.

Next on my itinerary was the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. As a horticultural consultant, I was particularly excited about this visit. The garden was a delightful showcase of tropical fruits, with papayas taking center stage. I wandered through the orchards, admiring the vibrant colors and exotic shapes of the various fruits. The air was thick with the sweet scent of ripe papayas, and I couldn’t resist trying a freshly picked one. It was absolutely divine – juicy, sweet, and bursting with flavor. I also sampled some of the other fruits grown in the garden, including mangoes, pineapples, and passion fruit. Each one was a taste of tropical paradise. The staff at the garden were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights into the cultivation of these exotic fruits. I learned about the unique growing conditions in Yakushima that make it possible to grow such a diverse range of tropical fruits. They explained how the island's warm, humid climate and fertile volcanic soil create the perfect environment for these fruits to thrive. I even got to see some of the fruits being harvested, which was a truly fascinating experience. I left the garden with a bag full of delicious fruits and a newfound appreciation for the agricultural bounty of Yakushima.

Lunch was at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, a charming eatery that combined art and cuisine. The restaurant featured a collection of local artwork, adding a touch of culture to the dining experience. I ordered a set lunch that included fresh seafood and local vegetables. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly captured the essence of Yakushima’s gastronomy. The restaurant itself was a cozy and inviting space, with large windows that offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The walls were adorned with paintings, sculptures, and photographs created by local artists. As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the island's artistic community. The combination of delicious food and beautiful art made for a truly memorable dining experience. I struck up a conversation with one of the artists whose work was on display, and she shared her inspiration and creative process with me. It was fascinating to learn about the unique challenges and opportunities that artists face on a remote island like Yakushima.

In the late afternoon, I sought out a local bar called Cafe&Bar RainTree. It was a cozy spot, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I ordered a local craft beer and chatted with the friendly bartender. He shared some interesting stories about the island and its people, giving me a deeper understanding of Yakushima’s culture. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. As I sipped my beer, I listened to the gentle sounds of jazz music playing in the background. It was a perfect way to relax and reflect on my journey. The bartender, whose name was Kenji, was a wealth of information about the island. He told me about some of the lesser-known attractions, such as hidden waterfalls and secluded beaches. He also shared some local legends and folklore, which added a touch of mystery to my experience. I learned about the island's unique customs and traditions, and I gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience and resourcefulness of its people.

For my final dinner in Yakushima, I headed to the Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This bustling market offered a wide array of local products, from fresh seafood to handmade crafts. I decided to try some of the local delicacies, including grilled fish and seaweed salad. The flavors were authentic and delicious, providing a fitting culinary farewell to the island. The market was a vibrant and lively place, filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares and locals chatting with each other. The air was filled with the aromas of grilled seafood, fresh produce, and spices. I wandered through the stalls, admiring the colorful displays of local products. I purchased some souvenirs for Klaus and Olivia, including some handcrafted wooden items and locally made sweets. I also picked up some fresh ingredients to bring back to Heidelberg, so that I could recreate some of the delicious dishes I had enjoyed on the island. The market was a perfect embodiment of Yakushima's vibrant culture and community spirit.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at a quiet spot overlooking the ocean. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow across the sky. I watched as the waves gently lapped against the shore, feeling a sense of peace and contentment wash over me. Yakushima had been an incredible journey of discovery, and I was grateful for every moment. I thought about the ancient cedar trees, the playful monkeys, and the stunning coastal landscapes. I realized that Yakushima had not only captured my heart but had also enriched my soul. I made a silent promise to return someday, to once again immerse myself in the natural beauty of this enchanting island. As I turned to leave, I whispered a heartfelt thank you to Yakushima, for all the memories and experiences it had given me.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Tokyo and then making my way home to Heidelberg. It’s always bittersweet to leave a place that has touched you so deeply, but I know I’ll carry the spirit of Yakushima with me always. I’m already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Klaus and Olivia, and perhaps even planning a trip back here with them someday. Until then, auf wiedersehen, Yakushima! It has been an absolute pleasure.
