Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs: A Day in Dades

Today was a sensory feast, a deep dive into the heart of Morocco's Dadès Vallei. The dramatic landscapes, the vibrant culture, and the warm hospitality of the Berber people have left an indelible mark on my soul. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my quiet New Zealand life for the open road, seeking beauty and connection in every corner of the world.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Achaf in Boumalne Dades. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as we gathered around a table, eager to start our exploration. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, a delightful combination of sweet and savory flavors that energized me for the adventures ahead. Klaus, ever the early bird, had already snapped a few photos of the sunrise over the valley, the soft light painting the landscape in hues of gold and rose. The cafe's inviting atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect start to our day.

Fueled and ready, we set off to explore the Dadès Vallei. The valley itself is a masterpiece sculpted by the Dadès River over millennia. Towering cliffs of red and ochre rock formed a breathtaking backdrop as we drove along the winding road. The landscape was dramatic and stunning, a photographer's dream come true. I found myself constantly reaching for my camera, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of it all. October in Dades Valley is proving to be quite pleasant, with mildly cool temperatures and a gentle breeze – perfect for exploring without the intense heat of summer.

Our first major stop was the famed Tisderine bends. The road snaked and curved, creating a series of hairpin turns that offered panoramic views of the valley below. The vistas were simply incredible, a tapestry of green oases and rugged mountains stretching as far as the eye could see. We pulled over at a viewpoint to take it all in, the crisp air filling our lungs as we marveled at the natural wonder. Even Klaus, usually so stoic, was visibly impressed, his eyes sparkling with delight as he surveyed the scene.

The beauty of Dades Valley lies not just in its landscapes, but in the warmth and resilience of its people.

Continuing our drive, we stopped at accessoires dades abd elhamid, a local shop, hoping to find some unique souvenirs. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from colorful carpets to intricate jewelry. I ended up buying a beautiful Berber rug, its vibrant patterns telling stories of the region's rich heritage. Supporting local artisans is important to me; it’s a way of giving back to the communities that welcome us with such open arms. It reminded me of the little shops back in Whanganui, where local craftsmanship was a point of pride.

Lunch was at Restaurant Fatima Berber gorges du dades, a charming spot nestled in the heart of the Dades Gorges. The aroma of tagine filled the air as we stepped inside, our appetites whetted by the morning's adventures. I ordered the tagine, of course, and it was absolutely divine. The meat was tender and flavorful, infused with a medley of spices that danced on my tongue. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel like honored guests in their home. We lingered over our meal, savoring every bite and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back towards Boumalne Dades, stopping along the way to capture more photos of the stunning scenery. The light was beginning to soften, casting long shadows across the valley and creating a magical ambiance. We passed through small Berber villages, their mud-brick houses blending seamlessly into the landscape. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the people who call this place home, their lives so intertwined with the rhythms of nature.

For dinner, we decided on Riad Restaurant Pizzeria Marhaba. The name might sound a bit unusual, but we had heard great things about their food, and we were in the mood for something a little different. The restaurant was a delightful surprise, offering a mix of Moroccan and Nepalese cuisine. I opted for a Berber pizza, a local specialty, and it was delicious. The crust was crispy and thin, topped with a flavorful blend of spices and vegetables. Klaus, ever adventurous, tried the Nepalese curry and declared it to be excellent. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with music and laughter filling the air. It was a perfect way to end our day, celebrating the simple joys of good food and good company.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we took a stroll through Boumalne Dades, soaking in the sights and sounds of the town. The streets were bustling with activity, locals going about their evening routines. I watched as children played in the square, their laughter echoing through the air. I stopped to admire a group of women weaving carpets, their hands moving with incredible speed and precision. It was a scene that captured the essence of Moroccan life, a blend of tradition and modernity, simplicity and vibrancy.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of Dades Valley. It's a place that has touched my heart and soul, a reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we will explore the Gorges du Dadès and the stunning landscapes around Sidi daoud AIT SEDRAT JEBEL SOUFLA. We also plan to try Cafe restaurant amazir for breakfast, followed by Café-restaurant Timzzillite Chez Mohamed for lunch and kasbah Amlal for dinner, plus maybe a drink at Café restaurant ASANFOU ATBIR. I can't wait to see what adventures await us.

The warm temperatures during the day require light clothing, but as the sun dips behind the mountains, a warm jacket is definitely needed. I almost forgot mine, but thankfully, I had packed it at the last minute. This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the importance of being prepared, but also of embracing the unexpected. It's a delicate balance, one that I am constantly striving to achieve.

And so, as the stars begin to twinkle above the Dades Valley, I bid you goodnight from this magical corner of Morocco. May your own travels be filled with beauty, adventure, and the warmth of human connection.

Until tomorrow,
Michelle
