Solo Art Adventure on Naoshima Island
Day 1: Art Awakening: My First Day Exploring Naoshima's Masterpieces
Immerse yourself in the art of Naoshima Island as I explore Benesse House, Chichu Art Museum, and Lee Ufan Museum.
A Day of Artistic Immersion
The ferry ride over to Naoshima Island this morning felt like the overture to a grand artistic symphony. I could sense the island's unique energy even before setting foot on its shores, a blend of tranquility and creative vibrancy that promised an unforgettable experience. As a horticultural consultant, I'm used to seeing the beauty in nature, but today, I was ready to explore how art and nature intertwine in this unique corner of the world.
My first stop was breakfast at APRON CAFE. Tucked away in Honmura village, the cafe exuded a cozy, homely atmosphere. The menu, crafted by a certified nutritionist, featured seasonal dishes made with local Setouchi ingredients. I savored a delicious breakfast, fueling up for a day of artistic exploration. It was a delightful start, and the taste of fresh, local ingredients was a perfect introduction to the island's ethos. As Maki, the owner, explained the concept I understood the passion for nutrition and seasonal ingredients which are sourced locally.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards the Benesse House Museum. The museum, designed by Tadao Ando, seamlessly blends art gallery and hotel. As I approached, I was struck by the harmonious integration of architecture and the surrounding natural landscape. The museum's collection boasts site-specific artworks by world-renowned contemporary artists. Wandering through the exhibits, I discovered art installations both inside the museum and scattered along the coastline. The experience was truly immersive, blurring the lines between art, architecture, and nature.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After spending a considerable time at Benesse House, soaking in the art and the stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, I made my way to the Chichu Art Museum. This museum, also designed by Tadao Ando, is built mostly underground to minimize its impact on the landscape. The concept was to rethink the relationship between nature and people. The museum's design utilizes natural light to illuminate the artworks, creating a unique viewing experience that changes throughout the day and seasons. The Chichu Art Museum houses a small but impressive collection, including Claude Monet's Water Lilies, works by James Turrell, and Walter De Maria's Time/Timeless/No Time installation. Monet's Water Lilies were breathtaking, displayed in a room carefully designed to unite the paintings with the surrounding space. The way the natural light filtered through the space, illuminating the Water Lilies, was simply magical. It felt as though the paintings were part of the environment, enhancing the emotional impact of the artwork. The James Turrell exhibits were equally captivating, using light as a medium to create immersive and thought-provoking experiences.

Leaving the Chichu Art Museum, I felt a sense of awe and inspiration. The way the museum integrated art, architecture, and nature was truly remarkable. It was a testament to the power of art to transform our perception of the world around us.
My final destination for the day was the Lee Ufan Museum. This museum, yet another collaboration between artist Lee Ufan and architect Tadao Ando, is a semi-underground structure that blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings. The museum houses paintings and sculptures by Lee Ufan, spanning from the 1970s to the present day. The minimalist design of the museum allows visitors to contemplate the works in a serene and contemplative space. The museum is composed of three rectangular rooms built into the ground, a closed triangular forecourt, and an approach path lined with parallel walls. The details of the spaces were designed according to the preferences of the artist. As I wandered through the museum, I felt a sense of stillness and dynamism, a perfect reflection of Lee Ufan's art. I found myself drawn to the way the artworks resonated with Ando's architecture, creating a sense of harmony between art and space. The museum provided an opportunity to return to my original nature and find time for quiet reflection.

Before dinner, I popped into the Benesse House Shop. The shop offered a wide selection of art goods, sweets produced in Kagawa Prefecture, and hotel goods. I picked up a few souvenirs, mementos of my first day on this enchanting island. The shop is known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

For dinner, I chose Issen, a restaurant located on the ground floor of the Benesse House Museum. The restaurant offers kaiseki cuisine made with fresh Setouchi seafood. Although dinner is typically only offered to guests of Benesse House, I was fortunate enough to secure a reservation. I enjoyed a delicious meal while appreciating the views of the Inland Sea and modern art. The large windows allowed me to appreciate the view from any seat. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with artistic immersion.

Although the weather in September can be unpredictable with high temperatures and heavy rainfall , I was fortunate enough to have a pleasant day. It's advisable to be prepared with rain gear. I'm also glad I remembered to bring comfortable walking shoes, essential for exploring the island. I did, however, forget my portable phone charger and Japanese phrasebook, which I'll need to remember for the rest of the trip.
Naoshima Island, with its unique blend of art, architecture, and nature, has already captured my heart. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
