Solo Art Adventure on Naoshima Island
Day 8: Farewell Naoshima: A Day of Coastal Wonders and Artistic Reflections
Reflecting on my final day in Naoshima, exploring coastal vistas, savoring local flavors, and capturing the island's serene beauty.
Coastal Echoes and Final Musings
As my solo art adventure on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of contentment and longing. This final day was a tapestry woven with scenic beauty, artistic contemplation, and the simple pleasures of island life. It’s funny how a place so small can leave such a large imprint on your soul.
The day began with a leisurely breakfast at APRON CAFE. The cafe is known for its use of local Setouchi ingredients. I savored a delightful meal, made even more enjoyable by the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I opted for one of their freshly baked scones with Naoshima sea-salted butter and sweet summer orange jam. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling me for my final explorations of the island. I made a mental note to try and recreate the orange jam when I got back to Heidelberg – a little taste of Naoshima to brighten up those German mornings.

With a full stomach and a light heart, I set out towards Tsunosaki. The crisp morning air carried the scent of the sea, invigorating my senses as I walked along the coastal paths. The island's landscape unfolded before me, a serene vista of lush greenery meeting the sparkling waters of the Seto Inland Sea. It was the perfect spot for a contemplative stroll, allowing me to reflect on the journey I had undertaken over the past week. It's amazing how therapeutic a simple walk by the sea can be. I made sure to bring my camera to capture the views.

The beauty of Naoshima isn't just in its art, but in the way it encourages you to slow down and appreciate the simple moments.
Next on my itinerary was George Rickey's Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82. The kinetic sculpture, with its heavy iron plates swaying gracefully in the breeze, was a mesmerizing sight. I spent a good while simply watching the sculpture interact with the environment, the silver plates catching the sunlight and creating a dance of light and shadow. It was a perfect example of how art and nature could harmonize, each enhancing the other's beauty. The sculpture is located near the Benesse House Museum. The coastal path offers scenic views to those walking or cycling.

For lunch, I headed to Yayoda. This restaurant is known for its seafood. I decided to try their sashimi. The fish was incredibly fresh, a testament to the island's rich marine resources. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, perfectly capturing the essence of Naoshima's culinary scene. It was a very unique experience, and something I'll remember for a long time.

As the afternoon waned, I sought a moment of relaxation at maimai. This cafe offered a cozy spot to unwind and reflect on my journey. I opted for their local craft beer. The cafe itself was adorned with artistic touches, reflecting the island's vibrant culture. Sipping my beer, I watched as locals and tourists mingled, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder that travel wasn't just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people. The cafe is known for its Naoshima Burger.

My final dinner on Naoshima was at Luke's Table. I savored their Setouchi slow-cooked set course meal. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, the perfect setting for a reflective meal. As I savored each dish, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had had on the island. The restaurant uses local produce. The restaurant combines traditional Japanese cooking methods with French recipes. This dining experience was the perfect way to end my trip.

I know I will carry a piece of this island with me, wherever I go. I am already looking forward to when Klaus and I can return together to experience the island.
Until next time, Naoshima. Thank you for the art, the beauty, and the serenity. Auf Wiedersehen!
