As my twelve-day adventure in Shirakawa-go draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had. From the tranquil beauty of the gassho-zukuri farmhouses to the warmth of the local people, this journey has been nothing short of transformative. Today, I decided to make the most of my final day by venturing beyond the village, eager to uncover more of what this region has to offer.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nomura. I savored every bite of the handmade soba noodles, a simple yet satisfying meal that has become a staple during my time here. The friendly owners always make me feel welcome, and I made sure to express my gratitude before setting off for my first destination: the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.

The journey to the museum was an adventure in itself. The train ride offered stunning views of the Japanese countryside, with lush green fields and rolling hills stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on my travels and mentally prepare for the prehistoric wonders that awaited me.

A Journey Back in Time: Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum

Arriving at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, I was immediately struck by its impressive architecture. The building itself is designed to resemble a dinosaur egg, a fitting tribute to the ancient creatures within. As I stepped inside, I was transported to a world millions of years ago. The museum is home to an extensive collection of dinosaur skeletons, fossils, and interactive exhibits.

One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to participate in a simulated excavation dig. Armed with a brush and a small pickaxe, I carefully sifted through the sand, hoping to uncover a hidden fossil. While I didn’t find anything significant, the experience gave me a newfound appreciation for the work of paleontologists and the painstaking process of uncovering the secrets of the past.

After my prehistoric adventure, I traveled to Kanazawa to visit the Nezumita-mon Gate. This historical gate, reconstructed in 2020, is a testament to Japan’s rich cultural heritage. As I approached the gate, I was immediately struck by its elegant design and imposing presence.

Walking through the gate, I felt a sense of stepping back in time. I imagined the samurai and nobles who once passed through this very entrance, their footsteps echoing through the centuries. The surrounding park provided a tranquil setting, perfect for contemplation and reflection.

A Taste of Tradition: Lunch at Zensuke

By now, I was starting to feel peckish, so I decided to head back towards Shirakawa-go, stopping for lunch at Zensuke. Zensuke is known for its delicious kushiyaki (grilled skewers) and traditional Japanese snacks. Being a solo traveler, I appreciated the cozy and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant.

I ordered a selection of grilled skewers, including rice cakes with soy sauce and miso. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of sweet and savory. The owner confirmed that there were no animal products in the rice cakes, which was a relief. As I savored each bite, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic and delicious cuisine.

A Farewell Feast: Dinner at Shiraogi

As evening approached, I made my way to Shiraogi for my final dinner in Shirakawa-go. Shiraogi is a well-regarded restaurant known for its traditional Japanese dishes and warm hospitality. I had heard rave reviews about their Hida beef set, so I decided to give it a try.

The warm hospitality of the staff added to the overall experience. They were attentive and friendly, making me feel like a valued guest. As I finished my meal, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the incredible culinary experiences I’ve had during my time in Shirakawa-go.

A Night of Karaoke: A Final Toast

To celebrate my last night, I decided to visit KARAOKE & BAR Maria. Now, I’m not usually one for karaoke, but I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and embrace the local culture. Plus, after twelve days of solo travel, I was ready for some social interaction.

Walking into the bar, I was greeted by a lively atmosphere and the sound of enthusiastic singing. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to belt out their favorite tunes. I ordered a drink and took a seat, watching as others took to the stage.

After a few drinks and some encouragement from my fellow patrons, I decided to give it a try. I chose a classic Japanese pop song and, to my surprise, found myself enjoying the experience. It was a fun and lighthearted way to celebrate my time in Shirakawa-go and connect with the local community.

As the night drew to a close, I raised a glass to my incredible journey. Shirakawa-go had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I felt grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this unique and special place.

Reflections and Farewells

As I prepare to leave Shirakawa-go tomorrow, I am filled with a mix of emotions. I am sad to say goodbye to this beautiful village and the wonderful people I’ve met along the way. But I am also excited to return home and share my experiences with my family and friends. I know that the memories I’ve made here will stay with me for a lifetime.

This trip has been a reminder of the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing new experiences.
