Diving into the Blue: A Day of Caves and Capes

Today was another incredible day here in Zakynthos, filled with breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. The kind of day that makes you realize why you travel in the first place. It was a day packed with natural beauty, from exploring hidden caves to standing atop dramatic cliffs. And, of course, we enjoyed some amazing food along the way.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at M-eating. Fatima and Omar were particularly excited, and I have to admit, so was I. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the Greek and Mediterranean cuisine was a perfect start to our adventures. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while Fatima enjoyed a delicious omelet. Omar, of course, went straight for the pancakes! It's these simple moments, enjoying a meal together before a day of exploration, that really make our family trips special. We chatted about our plans for the day, excitement bubbling in Omar's voice as he peppered us with questions about the caves we were about to visit.

After breakfast, we hopped in our rented car and headed towards the Keri Caves. The drive itself was scenic, with olive groves and vineyards dotting the landscape. I always appreciate these little glimpses into the local life as we make our way to the main attractions. When we arrived in Keri, the anticipation was palpable. We found a small boat tour that promised to take us inside the caves, and we eagerly hopped aboard. The sea was a stunning shade of turquoise, and the air was filled with the salty scent of the Ionian Sea.

As we approached the caves, I was immediately struck by the towering cliffs and the crystal-clear water. The Keri Caves are sea caves located on the southwestern coast of Zakynthos, known for their unique rock formations and vibrant blue waters. The boat navigated through narrow passages, and we were able to see the sunlight reflecting off the water, creating an ethereal blue glow inside the caves. It was truly magical! Omar was mesmerized, pointing out different shapes in the rocks and marveling at the colors. Fatima and I exchanged smiles, knowing that this was a memory we would cherish forever.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

We even had the chance to swim in one of the caves, and the water was incredibly refreshing. Snorkeling gear in hand, we plunged into the cool depths, exploring the underwater world. The marine life wasn't as abundant as in some other places we've been, but the experience of swimming inside a cave was unique enough. Omar, fearless as ever, was the first one in and the last one out, declaring it the best swim ever. I was just happy to see him so excited and engaged with nature.

After our cave exploration, we were starting to feel a bit peckish, so we drove to Aperitto Resto Bar for lunch. This seafront restaurant offered a rich menu of Greek dishes and Mediterranean delights. We sat at a table overlooking the sea, enjoying the gentle breeze and the stunning views. Fatima and I shared a traditional Greek salad, while Omar devoured a plate of souvlaki. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect spot to unwind after our morning adventure.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off for our next destination: Cape Skinari. Located on the northeasternmost tip of Zakynthos, Cape Skinari is known for its dramatic cliffs, the Skinari lighthouse, and the blue caves in the surrounding waters. The drive to the cape was beautiful, with winding roads and panoramic views of the coastline. As we approached the cape, we could see the iconic lighthouse standing tall against the horizon. It was a sight to behold!

We parked the car and walked towards the edge of the cliffs, taking in the breathtaking views. The sea stretched out before us, a vast expanse of blue, and we could see the neighboring island of Kefalonia in the distance. The wind was strong, but the views were worth it. Omar was fascinated by the lighthouse, asking questions about its history and purpose. I tried my best to answer, sharing what I knew about the maritime history of the region.

Cape Skinari is also known for its blue caves, and we decided to take a short boat trip to explore them. These caves are similar to the ones we saw in Keri, but they have their own unique charm. The boat took us through narrow passages, and we were able to see the sunlight reflecting off the water, creating a mesmerizing blue glow. It was a different experience from the Keri Caves, but equally stunning. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but I knew that no picture could truly do it justice.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Porto Limnionas Tavern for dinner. This tavern is located in a secluded bay on the west coast of Zakynthos, and it's known for its stunning views and delicious food. The drive to the tavern was a bit challenging, with narrow and winding roads, but the destination was well worth the effort. When we arrived, we were greeted by a breathtaking view of the bay. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding cliffs were dramatic and imposing. The tavern itself was charming and rustic, with tables set under the shade of pine trees.

We ordered a variety of traditional Greek dishes, including fresh grilled fish, lamb chops, and tzatziki. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was magical. As we ate, we watched the sunset over the sea, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. Omar, tired but happy, fell asleep in Fatima's arms as we finished our meal. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made a quick stop at Anamnesia Zakynthos to pick up a few souvenirs. This shop offers a variety of Greek products, from traditional crafts to local delicacies. We found some beautiful handmade ceramics and some delicious olive oil to take back home. I always like to bring back a little piece of the places we visit, as a reminder of the memories we made.

I am so happy that I decided to bring my family here, and I know that we will cherish these memories for years to come. As we drove back to the Diana Hotel, I couldn't help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring. We have plans to visit the Askos Stone Park and the Venetian Castle of Bohali [Tomorrow's Itinerary], and I am sure that it will be another amazing day.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Askos Stone Park and the Venetian Castle of Bohali. I'm particularly excited about the stone park, as I've heard it's a haven for local wildlife. I'm also looking forward to learning more about the island's history at the Venetian Castle. And, of course, we'll be trying out some new restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Sunset Michali's Taverna for breakfast, Filoxenia Restaurant for lunch, and Spartakos Taverna Zakynthos for dinner. I've heard great things about all of them, so I'm sure we're in for a treat. We might even sneak in a visit to SpeakEasy Zakynthos for a nightcap. Until then, goodnight from Zakynthos!

It’s experiences like these that remind me why I love traveling with my family. Each day brings new adventures, new discoveries, and new memories that we'll treasure forever. I am so glad we decided to come to Zakynthos, and I can't wait to see what the rest of our trip has in store for us.
