A Day of Discovery and Ancient Echoes

Today was a day of exploration, diving into Zakynthos' natural beauty and historical depths. It’s amazing how much this island has to offer beyond its famous beaches, and I was eager to uncover some of its hidden gems with my family. From a unique stone park filled with free-roaming animals to a Venetian castle offering panoramic views, today was a feast for the senses and a journey back in time.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sunset Michali's Taverna. The morning air was crisp, a gentle breeze rustling through the olive groves as we found our table overlooking the Ionian Sea. Fatima and Omar were particularly excited, and I could see the anticipation sparkling in their eyes. The food was delicious, a traditional Greek spread that included fresh bread, local honey, and creamy yogurt. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off for Askos Stone Park. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the island's lush interior. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed into a rugged, stone-filled terrain. I was immediately intrigued by the unique environment, a far cry from the sandy beaches we had enjoyed the previous days.

Askos Stone Park is truly a unique place. It's not just a park; it's a wildlife sanctuary, a forest reserve, and a natural zoo all rolled into one. Omar was in his element, his eyes wide with wonder as he spotted deer, peacocks, and various other animals roaming freely. The park's design allows the animals to thrive in their natural habitat, which is a refreshing change from traditional zoos. We even had the opportunity to feed some of the animals, an experience that Omar will surely cherish forever.

Exploring Askos Stone Park felt like stepping into a different world, where nature and history intertwine to create a truly unforgettable experience.

The park also features impressive stone structures, including old stables and rainwater collection tanks that date back centuries. These ancient structures add a layer of historical depth to the park, reminding us of Zakynthos' rich past. I found myself marveling at the ingenuity of the people who built these structures, their craftsmanship standing the test of time.

After spending a few hours exploring Askos Stone Park, we were ready for lunch. We drove to Filoxenia Restaurant, a charming spot known for its traditional Zakynthian cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and we were warmly greeted by the staff. We ordered a variety of local dishes, including moussaka and souvlaki, all bursting with flavor. Fatima particularly enjoyed the fresh salads, while Omar devoured his souvlaki with gusto. It was a satisfying meal that gave us a taste of authentic Zakynthian flavors.

With our appetites sated, we made our way to the Venetian Castle of Bohali. Perched on a hill overlooking Zakynthos Town, the castle offered breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Ionian Sea. The drive up to Bohali was steep, but the views from the top were well worth the effort.

The Venetian Castle is steeped in history, dating back to 1480. It was built by the Venetians as a stronghold and administrative center, and it played a crucial role in protecting the island from invaders. As we walked through the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of the past, imagining the soldiers who once stood guard on these walls.

The castle has withstood numerous wars, invasions, and earthquakes, leaving it in a state of ruins. However, the remnants of the perimeter walls, the main gate, and several 15th-century churches still stand, offering a glimpse into the castle's former glory. We explored the stone vaulted prison and the gunpowder rooms, each corner whispering tales of a bygone era.

The views from the castle were simply stunning. Zakynthos Town sprawled below us, a tapestry of terracotta roofs and winding streets. The Ionian Sea stretched out to the horizon, its azure waters shimmering in the afternoon sun. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty with my family.

As the sun began to set, we descended from the castle and headed to Spartakos Taverna Zakynthos for dinner. This restaurant is known for its seafood, and I was eager to try some of the local specialties. We ordered a grilled fish platter, which included calamari, prawns, and the fish of the day. The seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the island's rich marine resources.

After dinner, we decided to cap off the evening with a visit to SpeakEasy Zakynthos, a bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and creative cocktails. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. I enjoyed a locally inspired cocktail, while Fatima savored a glass of wine. Omar, of course, opted for a refreshing juice. The bar was lively but not overly crowded, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and other tourists.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. We had experienced so much, from the natural wonders of Askos Stone Park to the historical grandeur of the Venetian Castle. Zakynthos continues to surprise and delight me, revealing new facets of its charm with each passing day. I am particularly happy that Omar is having such a great time, experiencing new things and learning about the world around him. These are the memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and visit Gerakas Beach []. I'm excited to see the protected sea turtles and soak up some more of Zakynthos' natural beauty. And perhaps a bit of shopping at Mirabilia shop. Until then, goodnight from Zakynthos!

The weather in Zakynthos in September is generally warm and pleasant. The average daily temperature ranges from 21°C to 26°C, with plenty of sunshine. Rainfall is minimal, making it a perfect time for outdoor activities and exploring the island. The sea temperature is also warm, ideal for swimming and water sports. The wind is gentle, creating comfortable conditions for enjoying the beaches and other attractions.

I must remember to buy sunscreen tomorrow; the sun has been quite intense these past few days. Also, I think it would be nice to get a travel guidebook to learn more about the island's history and culture. It slipped my mind when packing, but it would definitely enhance our exploration.

I am looking forward to sharing more of our Zakynthos adventure with you all tomorrow!
