A Day in Woody Point: Where History Meets Hospitality

Today, I traded the rugged trails for a stroll through history in the charming town of Town of Woody Point. Nestled in the heart of Gros Morne National Park, this place feels like stepping back in time, with its colorful buildings and captivating stories etched into every corner. I was eager to explore, camera in hand, and experience the warmth of Newfoundland hospitality.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Cat Stop. I fueled up with a traditional Newfoundland breakfast – toutons with molasses, a delightful local treat. It was the perfect way to start a day of exploring. The cozy atmosphere of the café made me feel right at home, and the friendly locals were more than happy to share stories about the town's rich history. It's moments like these, connecting with people over a shared meal, that truly enrich my solo travels.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to explore the town. Woody Point, encompassing Curzon Village, Woody Point, and Winterhouse Brook, was once the capital of the area, bustling with banking and customs offices. Evidence of its past importance is everywhere. The architecture is a delightful mix of old and new, with many buildings dating back to the late 1800s. I learned that a devastating fire in 1922 destroyed much of the downtown, but the town persevered, rebuilding and maintaining its unique character.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found in the quiet corners of the world.

My next stop was the iconic Woody Point Lighthouse. Situated on Curzon Head, the lighthouse has a rich history dating back to 1919. The original lighthouse, a square, pyramidal, wooden tower, was built to guide the flourishing fishing community. A new tower was erected in 1959 and is still a defining landmark in the community. I climbed to the top, where I was rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Bonne Bay. The crisp October air and the vast expanse of water created a sense of tranquility that was simply breathtaking. I spent a long time there, capturing the beauty of the landscape with my camera.

After soaking in the views from the lighthouse, I wandered back into town for lunch at Taste. I opted for a seafood chowder, a Newfoundland staple, and it was absolutely delicious. The creamy broth was filled with fresh seafood, and it warmed me from the inside out. It was the perfect meal to enjoy on a chilly autumn day.

In the afternoon, I explored the shops and galleries in Woody Point, admiring the local crafts and artwork. The town is known for its vibrant arts scene, attracting artists from all over. I found a few unique souvenirs to bring back home to Fatima and Omar, little reminders of my solo adventure in Gros Morne. I also learned that Woody Point is thought to have more heritage buildings than any other town of its size in Canada. The Woody Point Heritage Committee has been instrumental in restoring and promoting the town's heritage assets.

As evening approached, I decided to visit the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar for a pre-dinner drink. This restored old warehouse sits directly over the water, offering unobstructed views of Bonne Bay. I enjoyed a glass of local wine while listening to live music, soaking in the cozy and vibrant atmosphere. The Merchant Warehouse is known for combining culture, nature, and live entertainment, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at the Ocean View Hotel. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering stunning views of the bay. I savored fresh cod, prepared with local herbs and spices, while watching the sunset over the water. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Before heading back to my campsite, I took a final stroll through Woody Point, admiring the twinkling lights and the peaceful atmosphere. The town felt safe and welcoming, and I was grateful for the opportunity to experience its charm and history. I thought about Fatima and Omar back in Bielefeld. I know they would have loved wandering through this town with me. Perhaps one day I will bring them here to experience the magic of Woody Point.

Tomorrow, I am planning to explore Baker's Brook Falls and the Bonne Bay Marine Station. I'm looking forward to more hiking and discovering more of the natural wonders of Gros Morne. But for now, I'll cherish the memories of my day in Woody Point, a town that truly captures the heart and soul of Newfoundland.

As I reflect on my day, I realize that solo travel isn't just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the people and the stories that make each place unique. Woody Point, with its rich history and warm hospitality, has certainly left a lasting impression on me. The kindness of the locals, the beauty of the landscape, and the sense of stepping back in time have made this a truly unforgettable experience. I am so glad I decided to include this stop on my Gros Morne adventure.

I'm especially glad I remembered to pack my camera today! I would have been kicking myself if I hadn't been able to capture the beauty of the lighthouse and the vibrant colors of Woody Point. On the other hand, I wish I had remembered to bring insect repellent. Even in October, those little critters can be persistent!

Good night from Woody Point!
