A Solo Escape to the Enchanting Con Dao Islands
Day 9: Con Dao's Poignant Farewell: Reflecting on History and Hope
A final day in Con Dao, exploring historical sites, savoring local flavors, and reflecting on the island's profound stories.
A Day of Remembrance & Reflection
As my journey in the Con Dao Islands draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. This last day was dedicated to delving deeper into the island's history and paying my respects to those who suffered and sacrificed here. It was a day of somber reflection, balanced with moments of simple joys, like savoring the local cuisine and connecting with the island's present-day spirit.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hani Bakery 2. It's a charming spot known for its delicious pastries and local treats. I opted for a banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich with a crispy baguette filled with savory ingredients. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's explorations. Sipping my coffee, I planned my route, a little melancholy that it was my last day exploring this beautiful island.

First on my itinerary was a visit to the Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave. Vo Thi Sau was a young revolutionary who was executed on Con Dao at the age of 19 and is now considered a national hero. The cemetery itself is a place of reverence, with many visitors coming to pay their respects, especially at night. I found the atmosphere deeply moving, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Vietnamese people. The air was thick with incense, and the soft murmur of prayers created a serene yet poignant ambiance. I placed a small bouquet of flowers on her grave, a silent acknowledgment of her courage and sacrifice.

Visiting the grave of Vo Thi Sau is not just about paying respects to a hero; it's about connecting with the spirit of resilience and the enduring hope for a better future.
Next, I visited Di tích Bãi Sọ Người, also known as the Skull Field. This site is a stark reminder of the brutal history of Con Dao, as it was the location of the first cemetery on the island and the site of mass executions of prisoners. Walking through this area, I felt a profound sense of sorrow and disbelief. It's hard to imagine the suffering that took place here, but it's important to remember and honor the memory of those who perished. The quietness of the site was deafening, broken only by the rustling of leaves, as if the very trees were whispering tales of the past.

For lunch, I headed to Quán Tri Kỷ, a restaurant recommended for its fresh seafood. I indulged in a delicious meal of grilled fish and fresh spring rolls, enjoying the flavors of the island one last time. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. It was a welcome respite after a morning of heavy reflection. I savored each bite, knowing that these were the tastes I would miss most.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Mocoda Shop. I picked up a few small gifts for Aishath and Ibrahim, wanting to bring back something special from this unique place. The shop had a variety of local products, from handcrafted items to snacks, offering a glimpse into the island's culture. I found a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf for Aishath and a small wooden boat for Ibrahim, hoping these gifts would convey the spirit of Con Dao.

As the day wound down, I treated myself to a final dinner at Nhà hàng Poulo Condore. The restaurant is part of the Poulo Condor Boutique Resort & Spa, known for its elegant ambiance and delicious cuisine. I enjoyed a quiet meal, reflecting on my experiences over the past nine days. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves created a calming backdrop, allowing me to fully absorb the memories I had made.

Con Dao has been more than just a travel destination; it has been a journey of self-discovery and historical understanding. The islands' serene beauty is juxtaposed with its poignant past, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. I came here seeking tranquility and connection with nature, but I left with a deeper appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit.
This solo trip has allowed me to reflect on my own life, my values, and my connection to the world around me. As someone who grew up on a small island in the Maldives, I've always felt a strong connection to the ocean and the natural world. Con Dao reminded me of the importance of preserving these precious resources and honoring the stories of those who came before us.
Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Ho Chi Minh City, and then on to Toronto. I'm looking forward to seeing Aishath and Ibrahim and sharing my stories with them. I know that the memories of Con Dao will stay with me for a long time, and I hope to return someday to further explore this enchanting archipelago.
As I prepare to leave, I carry with me a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced Con Dao. It's a place that has touched my heart and broadened my understanding of history, resilience, and the enduring power of hope. I am already planning to incorporate the lessons learned here into my daily life back in Toronto, striving to live with greater mindfulness and appreciation for the world around me. This journey has reinforced the importance of remembering the past, honoring the present, and working towards a better future for all.
