A Solo Escape to the Enchanting Con Dao Islands
Day 2: Island Escapade: Discovering the Untouched Beauty of Con Dao
Embark on a serene journey to Con Dao's hidden gems, where pristine beaches and tranquil island life offer a perfect escape.
A Day of Serenity and Exploration
Today was a day of immersing myself in the raw beauty of Con Dao, a place where the hustle of city life seems a million miles away. I ventured out to explore the islands, hoping to capture the essence of this tranquil paradise through my lens and share my experiences with you all. It's amazing how a change of scenery can bring a fresh perspective, and Con Dao is certainly delivering on that front.
My second day in the Con Dao Islands began with a hearty breakfast at An Ơi Cafe & Restaurant. It's a cozy spot known for its fresh, healthy meals and vegan-friendly options. Opting to skip the hotel breakfast, I wanted to experience a local eatery, and An Ơi was the perfect choice. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with both indoor and outdoor seating. I chose an outdoor seat to soak in the peaceful island vibes. I enjoyed a delicious and nutritious breakfast that fueled me for the day’s adventures.

After breakfast, I set off to Hòn Tre Lớn (Big Bamboo Island), a pristine island that promises an escape from mass tourism. The island covers 77 hectares and is known for its cool bamboo forests and vibrant coral reefs. The boat ride to the island offered panoramic views of the town, passing by Hòn Bà and Bến Đầm port. The scenery was simply breathtaking.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those we take alone, allowing us to truly connect with the world around us and find peace within.
Hòn Tre Lớn is a haven for nature lovers, boasting diverse flora and fauna. It's also home to the rare White-browed Piculet and a significant sea turtle nesting site. The north, west, and south sides of the island feature colorful coral reefs, making it ideal for snorkeling. I spent a good part of the morning snorkeling, exploring the pristine marine ecosystem. The underwater world was teeming with life, a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes that left me in awe. I was completely captivated by the vibrant coral and the diverse species of fish.
After my underwater exploration, I enjoyed some fresh fruit, cool drinks, and snacks on the quiet white sandy beach. It was a rare 'private beach' experience, and I relished the solitude and serenity. The island has a historical significance as a former political prisoner detention site before 1945.
In the afternoon, I ventured to Dat Tham Beach, a hidden gem accessible through a 3km forest trail. The trail was well-maintained, with educational signage and the serene sounds of nature accompanying my walk. The weather in Con Dao in December is pleasant, with mild temperatures and low humidity, perfect for outdoor activities. Dat Tham Beach is known for its well-maintained surroundings and beautiful corals close to the shore. There's also a small stream with drinkable water, making it a unique spot.

The walk to Dat Tham Beach was an adventure in itself, with the sounds of the forest and glimpses of unique flora and fauna. The beach is part of the Con Dao National Park, which ensures its preservation. Although some reviewers mentioned the presence of dogs along the way, I didn't encounter any during my visit. The isolation of the beach added to its charm, making it a peaceful retreat.
After a day of exploration, I headed to the Beach House Restaurant & Cocktails Côn Đảo for a relaxing evening. Although it’s not directly on the beach, it’s a cozy spot with a great atmosphere. I enjoyed some homemade pasta and a refreshing cocktail. The restaurant is known for its fresh, flavorful dishes and friendly service.

For dinner, I decided to try Nhà hàng Thu Ba, a long-standing restaurant in Con Dao. This restaurant has been around for over 30 years, serving fresh seafood prepared in Northern, Central, and Southern styles. The menu is diverse, featuring dishes like moon crab, seafood salad, and grilled snails. The seafood is incredibly fresh, which made for a memorable meal.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I made a stop at a local bar. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploration. I chatted with some locals, learning more about the island’s culture and history. It’s these interactions that often make a trip truly memorable.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Côn Đảo National Park Tourist Office and Van Son Pagoda. I'm looking forward to learning more about the island's natural and cultural heritage. I'll also be checking out Côn Đảo Gift for some souvenirs.
Reflecting on the day, I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of Con Dao. It's a reminder of the simple pleasures in life and the importance of preserving these natural treasures. Con Dao is more than just a destination; it's an experience that nourishes the soul. I am looking forward to sharing more of my Con Dao adventure with you all.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of the beauty of solo travel. It’s an opportunity to disconnect from the familiar and connect with the world around me. I hope to carry this spirit of adventure and discovery with me long after I leave these enchanting islands. Good night from Con Dao!
