A Day Among Giants
The crisp mountain air filled my lungs as I stepped out of the tent this morning, ready to embrace whatever adventures the day held. Today was all about Nevado Alpamayo, a peak that has captured my imagination for years. I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype, and let me tell you, it absolutely did.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Pizzeria Alpamayo (Al Horno Huaraz). It felt a bit odd to have pizza so early, but hey, when in Huaraz! The aroma of wood-fired dough and melting cheese was too tempting to resist. I opted for a simple margherita, and it was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. The pizzeria had a cozy vibe, and I could see why it's a local favorite. I made a mental note to bring Aishath and Ibrahim here someday; they would love the pizza and the laid-back atmosphere.

With our bellies full, we set off to get a closer look at Nevado Alpamayo. Even from a distance, its beauty was striking. The mountain is an ice-covered pyramid with steep slopes, part of the Cordillera Blanca. It's no wonder Alpamayo was once considered the most beautiful mountain in the world. As we hiked closer, the views became even more spectacular, with the surrounding peaks of the Santa Cruz massif adding to the grandeur. The crisp air and stunning scenery made me feel alive and invigorated, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Toronto.
The trek itself wasn't easy, the altitude definitely made it more challenging. I had to remind myself to take it slow and steady, just like my yoga instructor back in Toronto always tells me. But every step was worth it, as the views just kept getting better. The guys were in high spirits, sharing stories and jokes, making the hike even more enjoyable. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love traveling with friends.
Sometimes, the most beautiful views are the ones you have to work hardest to see.For lunch, we decided to try El museo de la papa rest. The name itself intrigued me – a potato museum and restaurant combined? I had to see it to believe it. And it did not disappoint! The restaurant was a celebration of Peruvian culture and gastronomy, with a menu full of potato-based dishes. I tried the Papas a la Huancaina, a classic Peruvian dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The creamy sauce and perfectly cooked potatoes were a match made in heaven. The restaurant also had exhibits about the history and significance of potatoes in Peruvian cuisine, which I found fascinating. As someone interested in sustainable living, I appreciated learning about the agricultural practices of the region.

After lunch, we spent some time exploring the area around the restaurant, taking in the local culture. I love how food can be such a powerful way to connect with a place and its people. It reminded me of the times Aishath and I would cook Maldivian dishes for our friends in Toronto, sharing a piece of our heritage with them.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Huaraz, tired but content. But the day wasn't over yet! For dinner, we chose Casa Tambo Restaurant, known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine and lively atmosphere. The restaurant was located in a beautiful colonial building, which added to its charm. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel right at home. I ordered a traditional Creole dish, and it was bursting with flavor. Casa Tambo also offers a folkloric show, so we were able to enjoy traditional Peruvian dances and music while we ate. The dancers were incredibly talented, and their colorful costumes and energetic performances were captivating. It was a wonderful way to immerse ourselves in Peruvian culture.

To cap off the night, we decided to check out El Templo Nigthclub. Now, I'm not usually one for nightclubs, but I figured, why not? It was a chance to let loose and have some fun. And I have to admit, I had a blast! The music was pumping, the lights were flashing, and the energy was infectious. I even tried some of the local drinks, which were surprisingly good. It was a night I won't soon forget.

As I lay in my tent, reflecting on the day, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. From the stunning beauty of Nevado Alpamayo to the delicious Peruvian cuisine and the lively nightlife, today was a feast for the senses. I'm so glad I decided to embark on this adventure with my friends. I know that these are the memories we'll be talking about for years to come. I’m looking forward to tomorrow's trek on the Santa Cruz trail, and maybe I'll pick up an alpaca souvenir from Mundo Alpaca.
Tomorrow, we trek Santa Cruz, and I'm excited to see what that holds. I need to remember to pack sunscreen this time; I'm already feeling the effects of the high-altitude sun. Also, I think I’ll grab some extra snacks; all this hiking is making me hungry. Good thing I have my trekking boots; otherwise, I would be in trouble.
