Discover the serene beauty of Laguna Cullicocha in the Peruvian Andes, where turquoise waters meet towering peaks. A day of hiking and wonder.
Cullicocha's Call
Today was nothing short of breathtaking. The kind of day that etches itself into your memory, a vibrant tableau of turquoise waters, snow-capped peaks, and the crisp, clean air of the Andes. Leaving the familiar comforts of Toronto behind, I sought out this adventure, and it delivered in spades. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the world's hidden gems and inspire others to step outside their comfort zones.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Lazy Dog Inn. It was the perfect start to fuel our adventure. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of a day filled with natural beauty made the mountain berry pancakes even more delicious. Aishath would have loved the country quiche, I thought, as I savored each bite, missing her already. After breakfast, we packed our gear and set off towards Laguna Cullicocha.

The drive to the trailhead was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Cordillera Blanca. The landscape transformed with every turn, from lush valleys to rugged mountain terrain. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale and grandeur of nature. I made sure to double-check my camera and capture the scenery. I need to remember to get Ibrahim a better camera for our next adventure. It's a shame I forgot the sunscreen, though. The sun at this altitude is no joke!
As we started our trek, the air grew crisper, and the scenery even more dramatic. The trail was challenging but rewarding, with each step revealing new vistas of the surrounding peaks. The August weather was surprisingly mild, making the hike comfortable despite the altitude. We passed through small patches of hardy vegetation, a testament to nature's resilience in this high-altitude environment. The trail wasn't too crowded, which allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. My friends and I shared stories and jokes, our laughter echoing through the mountains.

Reaching Laguna Cullicocha was like stepping into a postcard. The lagoon's turquoise waters mirrored the towering peaks of the Santa Cruz massif, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. The sheer scale of the landscape was humbling, reminding me of my place in the world. We spent hours simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and enjoying the peaceful ambiance. I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect, the silence broken only by the occasional bird call and the gentle lapping of the water against the shore.
For lunch, we stopped at Don Cuy, a local restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I decided to try the cuy, a local delicacy, while my friends opted for the lomo saltado and ceviche. The flavors were rich and authentic, providing a delicious taste of Peruvian culture. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the views and the warm hospitality of the staff. It was a perfect midday break, recharging us for the rest of our day.

After lunch, we made our way back towards Huaraz, stopping briefly at El Alquimista Rooftop Bar for a well-deserved drink. The rooftop setting provided stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains. As the sun began to set, the sky was ablaze with color, casting a warm glow over the landscape. Sipping on a locally inspired cocktail, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the experiences of the day. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the beauty we had witnessed.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves at Hacienda Huayoccari. The restaurant's elegant ambiance and exquisite Peruvian cuisine made for a memorable evening. The hacienda itself was a sight to behold, with its beautiful gardens and historic architecture. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring each dish and sharing stories of our adventures. The service was impeccable, adding to the overall sense of luxury and relaxation. Before dinner, we took a tour of the on-site museum, admiring the impressive collection of Peruvian art and artifacts. It was a fascinating glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage.

From the stunning beauty of Laguna Cullicocha to the delicious flavors of Peruvian cuisine, every moment was a feast for the senses. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this amazing country and share my experiences with you.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Nevado Alpamayo, and I am already excited about the prospect of seeing more of Peru's natural wonders. I am also looking forward to trying the Pizzeria Alpamayo for breakfast and El museo de la papa rest for lunch. I've heard great things about both places, and I'm eager to experience their unique offerings. And who knows, maybe we'll even find ourselves at El Templo Nigthclub for a bit of late-night fun. Until then, goodnight from the Andes!
Days like today remind me of why I left my job in Toronto and started this blog. It’s about connecting with nature, experiencing different cultures, and sharing those moments with others. Even though I miss Aishath and Ibrahim, I know they would be proud of me for pursuing my passions and embracing new adventures.
