First Impressions of the Cordillera Blanca

Touching down in Huaraz, Peru, felt like stepping into a different world. The air was crisp, and the towering Andes mountains loomed in the distance, a stark contrast to the familiar skyline of Toronto. I was excited to begin this 9-day trek through the Alpamayo Circuit with my friends. This adventure promised not only physical challenges but also a deep immersion into the natural beauty and local culture of the Peruvian highlands.

The journey here was long, flying from Toronto to Lima and then catching a domestic flight to Huaraz. The change in altitude was immediately noticeable, a reminder that acclimatization would be key to a successful trek. My friends and I were eager to explore Huaraz, a city known as the trekking capital of Peru, before fully committing to the rugged trails of the Alpamayo Circuit.

We began our day with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Andino. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn in by the aroma of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee. Sipping on the rich, dark coffee while enjoying a traditional Peruvian breakfast was the perfect way to start our adventure. The cafe's warm and inviting atmosphere made me feel right at home, a sentiment I deeply appreciated after the long journey.

After breakfast, we made our way to Andes Camping Mountain Shop. Knowing I had forgotten sunscreen, I was hoping they would have a good selection. The shop was a treasure trove of trekking and camping gear, a testament to Huaraz's status as an outdoor adventure hub. We spent a considerable amount of time ensuring we had all the essentials, from sturdy trekking boots to reliable camping equipment. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable, offering valuable advice on navigating the Alpamayo Circuit and ensuring we were well-prepared for the challenges ahead. I managed to find some high-SPF sunscreen, along with a few extra snacks, remembering how much I regretted not having enough on previous trips.

With our gear sorted, we decided to explore the city a bit. Huaraz is a unique blend of bustling urban life and serene natural beauty. The streets were alive with activity, a vibrant mix of locals going about their daily routines and tourists preparing for their own Andean adventures. The city is surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, creating a stunning backdrop that is both humbling and inspiring.

The mountains were calling, and I had to answer.

For lunch, we ventured into Chilli Heaven, a restaurant recommended by several locals. Despite its name, Chilli Heaven offers a diverse menu that caters to various palates, including Indian, Mexican, and Thai cuisines. I opted for a mild curry, wanting to play it safe before the trek, while some of my friends tried the more adventurous, spicy dishes. The food was delicious, and the restaurant's cozy ambiance provided a welcoming respite from the bustling city. We learned that the restaurant is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, known for its flavorful dishes and friendly service.

As the afternoon progressed, we took a leisurely stroll through the Plaza de Armas, the central square of Huaraz. The square was a hub of activity, with locals and tourists mingling amidst colonial architecture and vibrant gardens. We took some time to admire the Huaraz Cathedral, a beautiful structure that stands as a testament to the city's rich history and culture. The atmosphere was lively, with street vendors selling local crafts and musicians playing traditional Andean music.

Before dinner, we made a stop at a local market to immerse ourselves in the local culture. The market was a sensory overload, with vibrant colors, exotic smells, and a cacophony of sounds. We wandered through the stalls, marveling at the variety of fresh produce, local cheeses, and traditional textiles. It was a great opportunity to interact with the locals and get a sense of their daily lives. I picked up a few unique souvenirs for Aishath and Ibrahim, hoping to bring a piece of Peru back to them.

For our first dinner in Huaraz, we chose Restaurant Turístico Alpamayo, wanting to sample authentic Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, with traditional decor and friendly staff. We ordered a variety of dishes, including ceviche, lomo saltado, and causa rellena, each bursting with unique flavors and spices. The meal was a culinary journey, providing a delicious introduction to the diverse and rich flavors of Peruvian gastronomy. As we savored each bite, we discussed our excitement and anticipation for the trek ahead.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on how much I missed Aishath and Ibrahim. Traveling always makes me appreciate the simple joys of home. I promised myself to take as many photos as possible to share the beauty of the Alpamayo Circuit with them. I also made sure to call them before heading to bed, reassuring them that I was safe and sound.

Before retiring for the night, we reviewed our itinerary for tomorrow. We plan to visit Laguna Cullicocha, a stunning lake nestled high in the Andes. We'll have breakfast at The Lazy Dog Inn and lunch at Don Cuy, and in the evening, we plan to unwind at El Alquimista Rooftop Bar. I am particularly looking forward to capturing the scenic beauty of Laguna Cullicocha through my lens.

Back in my room, I organized my gear, ensuring everything was in place for an early start tomorrow. The altitude was still a bit of a challenge, but I was confident that a good night's sleep would help me acclimatize further. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and gratitude for this incredible opportunity to explore the Alpamayo Circuit with my friends. The mountains were calling, and I had to answer.

I also learned that August 1st is National Alpaca Day in Peru, especially celebrated in the southern highland regions. It's a day to honor the alpaca and the alpaca breeders, adding a unique cultural layer to my first day in Peru. Although Huaraz is not in the southern highlands, it added to the special feeling of the day.

Tomorrow, we will continue our preparations and begin our trek towards Laguna Cullicocha, ready to face whatever challenges and wonders the Andes may hold. I am so excited to see what tomorrow brings!
