Whispers of the Dolomites

Today was a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors that painted a vivid picture of Alta Badia's charm. From conquering mountain trails to savoring Ladin delicacies, every moment was a testament to the region's unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictability of my Toronto condo for the unpredictable allure of solo travel.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at the Alpine Restaurant Piz Arlara. Perched at 2,040 meters, the restaurant offered panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, a visual feast to accompany the delightful spread. The menu was filled with local specialties, and I opted for a traditional South Tyrolean breakfast of speck, cheese, and freshly baked bread. Fuelled up and ready, I set off to tackle the trails of Sass da Ciampac - Sass di Campaccio.

The hike started at Passo Gardena, a mountain pass that connects Val Gardena and Val Badia. The crisp mountain air invigorated my senses as I began the ascent. The trail wound its way through the Cir Peaks, offering breathtaking views of the Sella Group and Sassolungo. I descended into the Val de Chedul valley, a stunning glacial valley that seemed untouched by time. As I climbed towards Forcella de Crespeina, the gateway to the Crespeina High Plateau, the landscape transformed into a rocky, lunar-like terrain.

Reaching the summit of Sass da Ciampac was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply awe-inspiring. I could see the villages of Corvara and Colfosco nestled in the valleys below, and the distant peaks of the Dolomites piercing the sky. I spent a good hour at the summit, soaking in the beauty and capturing the moment with my camera. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the freedom of solo travel, the ability to immerse myself fully in the experience without distractions. I thought of Aishath and Ibrahim back in Toronto, sharing stories of my adventures and promising to bring them here one day.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

After descending from Sass da Ciampac, I decided to visit the Grotta della Neve (Bz), or the Snow Cave. Located near the Sasso di Santa Croce group, the cave is formed by a mountain stream that carves through the ice, creating a natural wonder. The hike to the cave was relatively easy, starting from the La Crusc cable car station. The trail offered stunning views of the Prati dell'Armentara meadows and the surrounding peaks.

The Grotta della Neve itself was a magical sight. The ice formations sparkled in the dim light, creating a surreal and ethereal atmosphere. Although access to the cave is officially prohibited due to the risk of falling rocks, I approached the entrance to take some photos, being mindful of the surroundings. The experience was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of respecting its boundaries.

After a day of hiking and exploring, my stomach was rumbling, signaling it was time for lunch. I headed to AdlerKeller, a restaurant known for its traditional Ladin dishes and grilled meats. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic ambiance, with wooden furnishings and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I ordered the Adler Plate, a hearty platter of polenta, cheese, mushrooms, sausage, speck dumpling, and venison stew. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day in the mountains.

In the late afternoon, after a brief pause at the accommodation I managed to find, I decided to indulge in the vibrant atmosphere of Glam's Alta Badia for a well-deserved drink. This bar was a delightful find, with its kind staff, delicious snacks, and expertly prepared cocktails. I savored a classic Aperol Spritz, basking in the warm glow of the setting sun and reflecting on the day's adventures. The music was lively, the vibe was cheerful, and it was the perfect spot to unwind and mingle with fellow travelers.

As evening approached, it was time for a culinary experience at La Stüa de Michil, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Corvara. Located within the La Perla hotel, the restaurant exuded an intimate and romantic ambiance, with its wood-paneled walls and elegant décor. Chef Simone Cantafio's cuisine was a fusion of Ladin and Japanese influences, a testament to his years of experience in Japan.

I opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The meal was a celebration of local ingredients, prepared with a refined and innovative approach. The sommelier, Silvio, guided me through the extensive wine list, recommending pairings that perfectly complemented each course.

The experience at La Stüa de Michil was more than just a meal; it was a sensory journey that engaged all my senses. The flavors, the aromas, the textures, and the presentation all came together to create a truly unforgettable dining experience. It was a fitting end to a day filled with natural beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible region and to share my experiences with the world.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Laghetto artificiale and Lago Sompunt, two picturesque lakes that promise more stunning scenery and peaceful moments [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. As I drift off to sleep, I'm already dreaming of the adventures that await.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” As I reflect on my day in Alta Badia, I realize how true those words are. This solo adventure has been a reminder to embrace the unknown, to step outside my comfort zone, and to savor every moment along the way.
