Solo Adventure in Alta Badia: Exploring Italy's Dolomites
Day 3: Lakeside Reflections and Ladin Flavors: A Day of Serenity in Alta Badia
Discover the tranquil beauty of Alta Badia's lakes and indulge in authentic Ladin cuisine on a serene solo adventure in the Dolomites.
A Day of Tranquil Discoveries
Today was a day of embracing the quiet beauty of Alta Badia. Leaving the bustling city life of Toronto behind, I sought solace in the serene landscapes of the Dolomites. My journey took me to shimmering lakes and into the heart of Ladin culture, savoring the flavors and sights that make this region so special. It was a day to recharge, reflect, and connect with nature's calming rhythm.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Edelweiß Hütte. Perched above Colfosco, the views from the Hütte were simply breathtaking. The crisp mountain air and the panoramic vista of the Sella group made the experience unforgettable. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee, fueling up for the day’s adventures. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made me feel right at home, a world away from my condo in Toronto. It’s moments like these that remind me why I crave these solo trips – a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with myself.
After breakfast, I set out for Laghetto artificiale, a man-made lake nestled in Badia. The walk there was a pleasant one, allowing me to soak in the stunning scenery. The lake itself was a tranquil oasis, reflecting the surrounding mountains in its calm waters. I spent some time simply sitting by the shore, listening to the gentle lapping of the water and watching the clouds drift by. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a world away from the hustle of software development. I even took a few photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment, hoping my son Ibrahim would appreciate them when I get back home.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of settings.
Next on my itinerary was Lago Sompunt, near La Villa. This lake was equally stunning, with the majestic Sas dla Crusc reflected in its waters. I decided to take a leisurely stroll around the lake, enjoying the fresh air and the picturesque views. The walk was easy and relaxing, perfect for someone like me who spends most of his days sitting in front of a computer. I even spotted a few swans gliding gracefully across the water, adding to the idyllic scene. Apparently, in the winter months, Lago Sompunt transforms into an ice-skating rink. That’s certainly something to keep in mind for a future trip.

For lunch, I ventured to Maso Runch Hof, a traditional Ladin farm in Badia. This agritourism farm has been run by the same family for over 200 years, and it’s clear that they take great pride in their heritage. The restaurant specializes in Ladin cuisine, and I was eager to sample some authentic dishes. I ordered a hearty meal of *turtres* (fried pastries filled with spinach and cheese) and *cajinci* (beetroot ravioli), both of which were absolutely delicious. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. It was a true taste of the Dolomites, a far cry from the usual takeout options in Toronto.

After lunch, I decided to explore Arte Costa in Colfosco, a shop known for its local handicrafts and souvenirs. I was hoping to find a unique gift for my wife, Aishath, something that would capture the essence of Alta Badia. The shop was filled with beautiful wooden carvings, hand-painted ceramics, and other traditional crafts. I ended up purchasing a small wooden nativity scene, which I thought would be a lovely addition to our home during the Christmas season. It's nice to support local artisans, and I know Aishath will appreciate the thoughtfulness behind the gift.

As evening approached, I made my way to Taverna Posta Zirm in Corvara for dinner. This historic restaurant has been a local institution for over 70 years, and it’s known for its traditional Ladin cuisine with a modern twist. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the menu was filled with tempting options. I opted for a grilled meat dish, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The flavors were bold and satisfying, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a wonderful way to end a day of exploration and discovery. The Taverna also offers vegetarian and vegan options, which I will definitely explore on another visit.

Reflecting on my day, I realized how much I appreciate these moments of solitude and connection with nature. Alta Badia has a way of slowing things down, of reminding you to appreciate the simple things in life. As a software developer, I spend so much time immersed in the digital world that it’s easy to forget the beauty that exists beyond the screen. This solo trip has been a chance to reset, recharge, and reconnect with myself. And as much as I enjoy my work, I know that these experiences are essential for my well-being.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Alta Badia Villa and the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park, and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine at Toccami Wine-Bar Cocktail-Lounge in the evening. I’m looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this beautiful corner of the world. The weather forecast predicts cooler temperatures, so I’ll be sure to pack an extra layer. For now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of exploring the Dolomites.
I am really looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!
